i just tried reloading the autosave over and over and it keeps getting me the month of the plague. i think that by the time an autosave is made the event had already been selected. i was, however, able to avoid the plague once i purchased a building in one of my towns.

I've noticed something that was posted earlier in the thread (from 13 years ago, I might add ), that sometimes the month turn comes up identical every time, no matter what you do in that final day. This doesn't only count for the monthly event, but also for the repopulation of the Artifact Merchants inside Tower, Dungeon en Conflux towns. And at other times, a simple reload is enough to have it changed.
I'm not sure why the difference occurs. Maybe it's just picking up the "garbage" from a specific memory location, which may or may not be reseeded with a reload?

It's because of level-ups. Also happens if you view the puzzle before ending your turn. Both those events fix randomness.
End of turn -> some of computer's heroes get new level -> Fixed randomness -> Same events.

In my experience, HOMM has a random number generator with very limited seeding. This means that the sequence of the random results is a fixed list.
So, often you can avoid a plague by reloading from autosave and doing anything that causes the game to burn a random number ... such as buying a hero (random hero appears in Tavern) or fight a combat.
Of course, the random number appearing in the list afterward may be similar to the one(s) you burned, so there is no guarantee you will change the start of month event.

I always used to think that the chances of getting the plague increased based on how many monsters you had in your town that you hadn't recruited yet. Sort of like it was spreading through overpopulation. I don't know whether it's true or not but I figured it made sense.
