Need help getting online games to work

(Disclaimer: Yeah, I know it's annoying to make threads like this, but no one ever looks at the Noob thread I made, so I made this.  Sorry!)

Whenever I try to play Age of Empires II with a friend of mine, my computer can't find his IP.  He says it's a firewall, but we can't figure out how to get it to stop blocking us.  Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, do you know how to stop it?  I'd appriciate it.  We've been trying to get this to work for months!

Turn off Firewalls

Have you tried turning off your firewalls while you want to play?  Just go into your control panel/Network connections right click on the connection you use and choose properties.  Next go to the advance tab and uncheck the firewall box.  When your not playing you can put it back up.

I did that but I don't have a firewall box.  All I get is "Allow binding to ATM?"

BTW, I have Windows ME if that matters.

Correct IP?

Are you sure you got his correct IP?  Tell him to go to command prompt, Start/Programs/Command Prompt, and type "ipconfig" then hit enter.  This should give him his correct IP address if he has it wrong.  When I play Heroes 3 by IP it tells me my IP is one thing and it is completely wrong and I have to do this to get the correct IP.

Gracie: here's the address: http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=10419

And I'm sure he has the right IP.  That's how he told me to find out my own.

BTW, thanks for trying to help

You probably have problems with your ports.
Do you use a router?

If you dont know what it is, or if you have it, just answer:

-Do you have a ADSL or any other kind a higher(than dial-up) connection? Which?

-To connect you just have to turn on your modem(ADSL), or your computer is always connected when turned on(the other option is having to run a program to autenticate your connection)?

-Do you have problems playing other games online?

-Have already you tried to be a server in a online game and it worked?(if yes, say the game)

-Do you have more than 1 PC sharing the connection?

I think that if you could answer some of these questions, I can probably identify if you have a router.

I had some problems with my connection too, so I configured the router to open the ports I want. I think that it is the reason of your problem.

yeah, DSL.  Is that the same as ADSL?

-To connect you just have to turn on your modem(ADSL), or your computer is always connected when turned on(the other option is having to run a program to autenticate your connection)?

I'm pretty sure it's always on.

-Do you have problems playing other games online?

This is the only game I've tryed.

-Have already you tried to be a server in a online game and it worked?(if yes, say the game)

nope

-Do you have more than 1 PC sharing the connection?

yeah, but only 1 other.

I think that if you could answer some of these questions, I can probably identify if you have a router.

Yes, you have a router.
It blocks some ports, and you wont be able to play a lot of online games. You will have to use some NAT Rules(the name can be differente depending of your equipment).

It is too difficult to explain what(and how) you should do to open these ports. It is easier to call to the support of your modem. Just take notes of the ports you want to open.
Example:
- Counter-Strike port: 27015(it can be changed)
- eDonkey / eMule: 4662/4672(can be changed)

Some games like Midnight Club 2 dont allow to select a port, so you should consult the documentation. I havent played Age of Empires online, so I dont know the port you should open. Have a look in the documentation of the game, or in the support area of MSN Zone(it is probably where you area trying to play, I think).

I think that's all.
