Unity--reposted from H4 Board
In the past few months, certain circumstances in my personal life have severely limited the amount of free time that I have.
I haven't been as active in the Heroes community in general as I would like to be, but I do read the message boards and try to keep tabs on what is happening in Our World.
I say Our world because I believe that the Hommunity is just that--a little microverse that we all share with one another because we have a common love for a game that has been around in one version or another for a long time now.
Something I have been seeing a lot of lately really bothers me, and that is the number of people who seem to believe that Heroes is dead.
3DO is defunct, many people believe that H4 ruined the Heroes series, many people believe that H3 is ancient and should be shelved--supplanted by H4. The Zone dropped H3 down to 1 room and it's a pain in the ass to get to it now, vets are leaving......etc, blah blah
I don't know.......to me, there's a lot more good in the current situation than there is bad. We still have the game series we all love. We still have the means to 'get together' in a lobby and chat and b.s. around while we have fun killin' each other. There are still noobs buying/borrowing/downloading/etc the game(s) and trying it out.
One of the most important aspects of the entire HoMM experience for me has been the people I have met and made friends with since I started playing. I believe that a game of this caliber attracts players who are more or less above average intelligence, are quite imaginative, and generally fun to interact with. Of course, all of the players don't fit this description, but the long-term addicts sure seem to.
The list of people whom I've never met IRL that I consider to be friends is amagingly long, and the personal growth that I've experienced as an individual from being exposed to them is incalcuable to me. There are many people who have become quite dear to me as a result of my involvement in the Hommunity. Although I've never met them, I honestly believe that I could sit down to dinner in any one of their homes and feel like I was a member of the family.
The game--it's a classic and yet it's 'new'. The difference between H3 and H4 vast, but each version shares a common theme and between the two of them there is enough fun, fantasy, and strategy to placate a very broad range of personal tastes/interests.
I think it's odd that so many people argue over which version of the game is better. Many of the old H3 die-hards are stoic H4 supporters now, and they seem to forget how much time they invested in the previous version of the game (because they loved it so much) now that they have their hands on H4. They loved H3 before H4 was released, but now it's crap simply because a newer version is out? Where's the logic in that train of thought? Along those same lines, many people gave H4 a shot and didn't like it for one reason or another. Now the H4 lovers whom they used to play games with on a regular basis are the enemy? Why? It's still Heroes. It's just Heroes in a different form?
To hell with the "3DOH ruined the game because of this/that/blahblahblah/etc....." spiel. Things change. Games change--evolve. Is it permanant?
No, it isn't. How damned hard is it to set personal preferences aside and just coexist--having fun, meeting new people, making new friends, keeping old bonds of friendship strong?
Who knows what the next (and I do believe there will be a Heroes 5) version will be like? It could be a combination of H3 and H4. It could be something entirely different. Will it suck for everyone then? I doubt it.
We're still the same people who have 'known' each other for years now. We still play the same game in one version or another. We still participate in the same Tourney(ies).
Heroes isn't dead. Want proof? The very fact that you're reading this should be proof enough. Can it die if even only a handful of us remain to 'carry the torch'?
No.
I'll be around. For a long, long time.
How about you?

get a great first post, then get a couple of stupid tossers and voila - you have this thread
I agree with most of your post lich_king but its one aspect you seem to have missed. And thats the part about having competivity can also be a good thing.
IMO its tough too "unite" us heroes players because we play different games and us standing next to eachother has no real purpose. Having TOH mixed by two games makes no sense, nor does that we maybe will start playing to other game because im quite sure none of us will.
On the other hand what these 2 sides brings is exactly that... they unite the people playing that game. It gives a "we against them" feeling and that can be very contributive too IMO.
Take this board for example, without the tossing between the two sides it would be boring. Sure every now and then an interesting thread shows up and can be discussed but if not? ...ZZZzzzZZZ

Great post Lich, enjoyed reading as usual. I'll be here and there, but not playing heroes til h5. RMG extended H3 life for me by a year (prior to this I didnt play for 6 months) Now that novelty has worn off, I'm just too bored of it. H4 should have prolonged this, but its terrible for me to play online, although individually or hotseat it is ok.
AoW2 Shadow magic commands my time, and I recommend it to anyone. Many have it already and others getting it also, so while i'll be about the hommunity, I'll be urging people to try Shadow Magic. Call it heresy if you like, beats being bored
Edit....reposted from that H4 board due to tricky lichy
