Random Map: The Real Problem
I saw lot's of topics related to random maps, some very interesting...but none mentioned the Real Problem( or I just missed that one ).
I love playing random maps but I know that the host of the game can see the map any time he wants using the map-editor...wich means that only the guest is playind the map blind and has a great disatvantage.
Is this cheatig? It is certainly not honourable.
How can you prevent it? Only by being the host every time? Hehehehe.
I don't use it.
The players who beat me used it )

yes this is a problem
That is why i donīt like random maps, but i donīt know a way to prevent somebody from editing the map before the game starts, or prevent him from looking at it.
You can check the saves afterwards to see if there could have been some map-editing, but thatīs it.

Win or lose, it doesn't matter. The way it happens is what is important

Problem?
In the 60+ random maps i have played, I am sure i have hosted more than half of them. I have never suspected my opponnent of viewing the map if he was the host.
If i did suspect him/her, dont play them again. Simple solution. THis is just a game. No one LIKES to lose, especially to a suspected map viewer, but like i stated above. Move on to your next opponent and have a fun game.
Alot of players get caught up in the TOH ladder and forget what this is..... a game. Playing unknown people can lead to ..... well .....anything....... but can also lead to a fun time and a new online friend.

Cheesus:
Actually, I don't think editing is a problem...I don't think that is possible on randoms since it generates the map right then.
Muerte:
I agree with iron 100% here, if you think someone is looking (which is in my book definitely cheating) don't play them. Unfortunately some ppl find this whole damn TOH thing so 'competetive' they feel that they must cheat to gain rank (quite silly). If you really want to 'catch' someone doing it...make saves of the game and review it...you can get good idea I imagine. (ie, when you are faced with that decision to go through a 'horde of imps' or 'lots of grand elves' week 1....and the person goes through the elves to get to some easy box or what not...something is fishy....but that strays from the main point: Play with ppl who like to play the game for the fun of the game....you will find the game much more pleasant.
Enjoy!

Someone that cares for his points can easily look at the map,...but sometimes you just don't care about the saves...looking for something that just might not exist...all the time lost just looking at the saves...and if one thing seems strange you can report him ,...maybe for an own error...anyway random maps are not be playes with someone you don't know...

I hope things will change with Homm4.
Mayby there will be finally something like a battlenet, where all the saves or rdm maps (and only there) will be stored. The game should be also saved not only after a turn, but after every move a player done (moving hero, building structure). It could pretend to "replay" turns...
Passwords are another option to solve this problem. A save or multiplayer rdm map could be open by password known only to the player.

I agree with ya there. Random maps are best when ya play with ppl you know...no suspicion of cheating. But personally...I never automatically suspect someone of cheating..and have never made saves to try and 'catch' someone...And I'm always interested in finding more good, fun players so I don't automatically rule out ppl I don't know.
But, the topic asked how to prevent looking at map editor. That was just one suggestion for what you can do now if it really concerns ya (saving everyday that is). And I agree, this is not an ironclad way of saying "you took road A over road B..you looked at map" but...under right circumstances suspicion can arise.
Zonekill has the right idea (albeit a touch excessive in my opinion, I don't know what server or who's harddrive has the capacity to save after every heros move). But, not allowing editor viewing of random generated, multiplayer maps seems a logical and plausible thing the almight 3dO could do....but of course they won't...
maybe if I was a half-baked moron I would post such things on a wish list somewhere for a game that is already basically completed (HOMM4) *last bit meant in a humourous tone of course
Enjoy!

Saving after every move doesn't mean that there will billion of saves. Only one to overwrite on and on. Like in Diablo II .

Well, unless there is the editing problem which IS cheating then viewing the map isn't a problem for me cause I have said it before and here again:
If you know how to play then you know how to play, and if you know how to play you win, unless you play against somebody who know to play better.
Even if your opponent have seen the map and have more dragons utopias and pandora boxes with him - if we start equaly I can beat you!
P.S. - I want new enemies - my icq is 78808966
add me, I challegne you all!

You can not do map-editing before the game...it is a random map that is generated "on the spot"...but looking at in the midlle of the game gives you the advantage of a cartographer.
I agree that is best to play with people you know...but I would like to play a random with you, JTL, sometime...so what do we do? You could come to Romania and meet me for a beer and a snack My point is that I don't now so many players...but I really like to play randoms.

He he he...Redstorment and I are trying to play a random map really hard but the generator seems to hold a grudge on us...we tried so many times that they should make a comedy about it. But I recomend evryone to play with him, he is a very honourable player.

HOMM4,...i read that it would be in a way like Disciples(for those who played, i know that game very well),...but if so then the game will turn into a serch for the opponents hero just to strike him with spells,...i hope for something new but not this kind...

looking at mapeditors
I only play random-maps and yes: if playing an unknown opp, I want to be host to prevent the other from looking at the editor.
But like always: u can't totaly prevent cheaters anyway: I will take up anyone using mapeditor, if u don't mind me using a trainer: u can find find my castle guarded by 10.000 archers real soon, using the mapeditor
My point is: there r so many ways to cheat (and looking at editor is a very simple one), only thing u'll have to do is to pick out the people that don't use it.
And u'll recognize fair players soon enuf: those r the ones not cheating, who finish their games and don't nag about points

I agree with Ironmlh...someone screws you...dont play em again.
You suspect someone screws you..dont play em again.
You think everyone screws you...get some drugs from your therapist cus you are PAR-A-NOID!!
The games you lose on this ladder won't mean snow to you when they reset the scores in a few months.
