Homm history and general wishes

Homm 1
The game that started it all. Average graphics, average gameplay, excellent story.
Homm 2
The game that some think is the best of the series is not. While there was an improvement in gameplay, the graphics are horrible. The story is still excellent. The upgrade system was introduced, and it had some creatures upgrade and some not. The green dragon upgraded twice.
Homm 2 POL
Have not played, sounds a little better on gameplay.
Homm 3
The Homm series changed a little in this game. The gameplay became superb, but the graphics still didn't match the homm 1 ones. The story was the second-best of the series. Every creature had 1 upgrade except for neutral ones.
Homm 3 AB
Good expansion pack, introduced a few useful artifacts, and a new, good castle. The story was the Best in the series. Super powerful creatures introduced. I think it is the best in the series.
Homm 3 SOD
Good new artifacts, good story, but lacking in other additions.
Homm 3 WOG
Best. Expansion. Evar.
Homm 4
Some people think this is the worst in the series, but I think it is the best after WOG. It has no upgrades, but you choose which creature to build in the castle. It is 3D and its graphics are the best of all, except that your army's face is turned away from you in battle when you attack. It has the best gameplay, but the worst story in the campaigns. It isn't bad, but the campaign stories have no relation to each other. The general story is all right.
Homm 4 TGS
Little better than HOMM IV, but not much stuff added. Mediocre story.
Homm 4 WOW
See TGS.
Homm 5
Not made yet, I hope it will have combo artefacts like in SOD, a 3d field, and a good story. It also needs the two-creature system of Homm 4, but they need to have upgrades.

It is not the first, but I think it is the best one. This is mainly to give an overview of Homm and show noobs what homm 4 came from.

Mvass, you cannot give the objective Homm review, since you didn't play the last expans for Homm4, also, the part, where you say, that Homm2 graphics are horrible is your personal opinion, not all people think, that the graphics are horrible and you should read more articles about the each of the game and then judge...

I have to comment... back in when homm1 was made, the graphics would be considered quite good.

Though this thread have developed into more of a Tavern thread, I'll try to make a good reply...

You said that the graphics of H3 sucked.
I don't agree with you there. It was improved from H2, and it was just the way I wish H5 to be. Not too shiny, not to bad.

You see, this is the thing that totally ruined adventure games (and lessened the quality of Heroes combat, imo. At least in some ways...): When 3D-technology was being made in an easier way, with less worry for better results, every game designer wanted his or her game to be in 3D. Even though great games had been made in 2D, like Bud Tucker in Double Trouble and Monkey3, they made them in 3D, even if the format didn't fit the story and characters.

So, my point is, MAKE HEROES 5 2D!!!!!

I didn't say homm 3 graphics sucked. I said that they were worse than homm 1 graphics. Homm 4 has the best graphics of all. The only bad thing about it is that you see only the back of your army.

depending on what they want to do, 3d-rendered graphics might really make it easier (or cheaper, or from whatever point of view you look at it).

the other problem is that 3d-rendering enables those shiny perfect results. imho this is not what suits homm, because medieval artists could not achieve this kind of perfection. the likely result of perfect graphics is that the result doesn't feel mytholological anymore.

i am not against 3d-rendered graphics, but in that case i would suggest to set the priority of mythological style above the priority of generally used measures of 3d-rendered graphics quality (like e.g. homm4 thunderbird).

the issues that pop into my mind most readily are texture that should be less smooth, lines that should be less straight and anatomy that should be less perfect (i don't mean like homm4 bone dragons that had forelegs coming from the middle of the ribs but proportions and level of detail rather), and the general feeling of a monster (e.g. homm2 pikeman mouse-over animation was a very nice example).

My two cents

All I can say is I don't understand the way you understand "good" graphics. I think the HoMM1 graphics were great, the fairy tale style creatures fitting the game very well. HoMM2 was just beautiful in my opinion, the creatures switching from "look how cute I am" to a more serious, but still somewhat cartoonish look. HoMM3 had semi-realistic graphics which is not exactly what I'd go for when doing a HoMM kind of game, but implemented with skill it looked very good nonetheless. IMO HoMM4 was (graphically) nothing more than a big mistake. The isometric view eliminated the chance of the game to win the Best Looking HoMM Award, but it could still look decent. Unfortunately HoMM4 was made in a hurry and a lot of the creatures are just awful, with such monstrosities as the everburning chicken troll doll Halfling, ice-cold-not-dead-cold vampire (although many say it looks quite good, IMHO the HoMM2 one was a lot better), anorectic Elf and winged and beaked canine on diet. The isometic view can be put to good use as proven by the meant-to-be HoMM5 phoenix, but 3DO's "let's release it as fast as possible, they'll buy it anyway" attitude killed the cat.

Yet another forum in which the majority rules

Once again the true fans of Heroes are speaking on behalf of their own fond memories associated with such a loveable game.I love listening to the true fan speak of beautiful portrait art rendered from heroes1,2, and 3.I couldn't agree more. After hearing a certain someone nag about the importance of graphics in a game I couldn't help but roll my eyes with unnerved dissatisfaction.Quite frankly anyone who thinks the Heroes of Might and Magic's "graphics" are its most important features should look elsewhere for gaming recreation. It's clear that this person's definition of "graphics" is to bring the player in so close to the game that you are 'virtually' in it.Well that is not Heroes!Go play Neverwinter Nights or Everquest.Does this allude to a stagnate set of graphics for our loving Heroes series?Certainly not!Unlike other games the Heroes series has the largest group of not only faithful fans but exceedingly patient as well.(keyword is patient)Rome was not built in a day.The fans know that to create a reasonably fantastic game in which everyone can enjoy they must slowly but surely evolve the game adding a little, here and there, until you've achieved extraordinary results.Listen to what people are saying. They say we already have great stories and beautiful artwork. The finished product is always better than a rushed high-tech frame with no characters and story that people can connect with on a turn-based strategy game level.

Lord_Woock, i was always certain it was about me!
nevertheless, i still am quite certain and want to have my take on it:
Quote:
After hearing a certain someone nag about the importance of graphics in a game I couldn't help but roll my eyes with unnerved dissatisfaction.

first, the accident that, from among the people who like to write longer posts in this forum, it's me who is active in the forum atm, doesn't make me a certain someone for you.
Quote:
It's clear that this person's definition of "graphics" is to bring the player in so close to the game that you are 'virtually' in it.

aren't you getting a little bit too sentimental here? how close you think is possible to bring a player to any game? not very close imho. it's more like i don't rather like to see details that are disturbing because they are out of context.
Quote:
Well that is not Heroes!Go play Neverwinter Nights or Everquest.Does this allude to a stagnate set of graphics for our loving Heroes series?

no, i won't go play those games, and what i think what homm is is my personal matter. i do like medieval art to a considerable extent and i do believe that a proper application of medieval style could be a niche for homm that could make it distinctly different from neverwinter nights or everquest. not even to mention that i have announced that i will roleplay a medieval arts style supporter in this forum quite a while ago.
Quote:
Unlike other games the Heroes series has the largest group of not only faithful fans but exceedingly patient as well.(keyword is patient)

thanks, but i don't quite understand what point you are trying to make with this? that the homm fans will always eagerly wait for the next homm no matter what?

and i wonder what you mean exactly by your statement in the subject where you mention that majority rules in this forum with perhaps some hint of disappointment?

HoMM1:
Average. Relatively low graphics, average gameplay.
HoMM2:
Quite good. Average graphics, good gameplay. Ability of upgrading creatures is good.
HoMM3:
Fantastic!!! Good graphics, wonderful gameplay, enjoyable campaigns... and most of all...all creatures upgradable!
HoMM4:
Good. Very good graphics, but too detailed. Good gameplay. One thing that bothers is choosing one creature of the level.
HoMM5:
Dunno, yet. I'm willing, that it will be quite good.

P.S. MVASSILEV, some of my thoughts over heroes games match with yours. But not all..

I agree with you there, mvass.... Homm4's storyline is disgraceful- it doesn't intruigue me in any way, and to me, it seemed as if NWC ran out of ideas, or didn't have enough time to think up of a better one.
UbiSoft must not make the same mistake, coz the storyline is one of the major factors of why I started to play Heroes, and im sure this is the case for many other fans of the series.

Foolish, you cant compare graphics from one gaming era to another. In fact you cant compare any of them, because they have all changed from game to game. What the point of comparing graphics from a 10 year old game to a game of today? ridiculous. As Someone said, the graphics from early in the series may have been considered quite good....so lets do the sensible thing and compare h4 to h1, with all the upgrades in technology there has been...

Quite smart really

If there is a matter in graphics and you "can't compare graphics from one gaming era to another", compare gameplay.
I think that gameplay is even more important than the graphics.
