Immortality Potions - Make it official

From the Celestial Heavens message board, one of the homm4 programmers mentions why the immortality potion came to be:

"What to do? Basically, we hacked it, and the name of that last-minute hack is the immortality potion. The immortality potion had one basic purpose -- to prevent the main characters of campaigns from dying in small battles; to prevent the player from losing unless s/he was really and truly defeated. (If you look at the code, you can be sure the IP was a last-minute hack; it's still called the potion of precognition in the artifact enumeration!) We also made sure that the heroes would always be offered the defense skill to boost their survival."

So those of you who hate the immortality potions, or wish them banned from games, you can rejoice in the fact that they were never supposed to be there in the first place, and were added as a last-minute decision, for campaigns, not even multi.

so that means that they stumbled upon the immos by mistake, or as a last minute thing for campaigns and made the game playable in multi?? W/o it there would've been only 1 castle - chaos!

If Equilibris team can read this, maybe they can make it so you can't drink one in a battle, that'll take care of the "dreaded by some barb", but also it will spoil other strategic alternatives for non-combat heroes in battle.

< so you can't drink one in a battle >

..like reverse use of potions that can only be drunk in battle.. smells good at first sound: immos to be drunk only OFF battlefield

This makes a lot of sense.  The H4 developers wanted heroes on the battlefield, but they wanted them to be tough enough to survive, but not so tough that heroes, alone, could fight all the battles.  The immortality potion was the solution they chose (and, perhaps, it was a poor choice).  Personally, I still think that getting the heroes off the battlefield would be a good idea, but it would be nice if, perhaps, an army group could have two or three or even four heroes present (for their spell and skill abilities) while still making them invulnerable to direct attack (i.e. off the battlefield).

just my 2 cents ...

lol ... I thought so too.

But you gotta admit, H3 was a great game.  You don't need those heroes on the field to have a great strategy game.  Putting them on the field was a RPG innovation, and Heroes sux as a RPG.

Don't you think?

heroes can stay on the battlefield, just remove melee/archery.

+ it must cost something to flee from a fight, why dont make the hero lose 10% of his experience every time he flee?

well that is the story of h4 - it was supposed to be more RPGish than h3, but by accident it is a good strategy game, more strategic than h3.  obviously the developers didn't know much about what they were doing, but they accidentally made it good.

i dont understand why it matters whether it was an accident or not.. it is what it is.

in basketball if you make a half-court shot it may be luck, or it may be skill.. but it still counts for 3 points either way.

the camel is babbling again, someone get its medicine!

ya, i think we all mean same thing here: heroes to stay in battle, but have severe reduce of their fighting skills..
.. archery and melee strength could be defined more by arties rather than skill advancement

I always thought

That the immo potion is fine, just if only there was a limit of one potion use per battle for each hero.  Its the overuse overkill that messed things up.

Makes sense that they made Imo potions for campaigns since before the first patch the com did nothing but build an invincible army.

Seems everyone has a complain on the Imoor potions & personally it is pretty cheap & it takes no tactics or skill to guzzle down quite a few Imoor potions.

I think it should be banned in the tournament as if a player were cheating.
I wouldnt mind seeing how far Fear could get without using those cheap potions but just a suggestion.

Man what are you drinking or smoking. Get me some of it, that is one of the saddest attempts at a Heroes game ever to see the bottom side of a CD.

Lets hope UBI can do something with there newly found license.

it's a small wonder that h4 players have no respect for most h3 players... you come to our board and write thoughtless crap saying that "h4 sucks" but never give a reason, or if you do give a reason, it's either wrong or general as hell like "a fun factor".   it's painfully obvious that h4 is a deeper, more challenging, game.

- heroes must choose between skills and the choice, unlike with h3, is not the same every single game
- there are multiple heroes rather than 1 "superhero" (who has the same skills in every h3 game) and there are many hero combinations
- you must choose which dwellings you build in your town, you don't just build 'em all
- heroes are in combat, and big combats against your opponent can be big balancing acts in which you must weigh between many different factors.  combat in h4 is MUCH more challenging.
- no chaining of creatures.. every creature/hero has it's own movement points.
- because of no chaining of creatures, h4 requires more skill in logistics.. in h3 you could mess up a bit on your logistics but if you could still make it with your current hero to the next hero to give the troops, then it didn't matter.  With troops having movement points in h4, bad moves hurt you more.

Now you will probably reply back  "no, h4 just sucks!!!"  If you come to the h4 board at all, come to discuss any legitimate reasons you have for thinking h3 is better than h4, or to have fun in some of the off-topic threads.  Otherwise don't bother to post.

p.s. - i've heard the argument that h3 had a bigger toh community than h4 does, so thus that made it better.  I would say that h3 is more appealing to coffee-cup gamers than h4, so that drew a decent part of that community.  Not to mention h4 didn't have Multiplayer until SIX months after release!!!  that doesn't help the MP community.  But you can't use the fact that MP wasnt available until 6 months after h4 release or that h4 does not have as big of a community to say that h3 is a BETTER GAME than h4.
