Only the good die young

Well, I was listening to a song and the title and lirycs made me wonder. The song was called 'Only the good die young'. And the next line is 'And the evil seem to live forever'. I mean, don't take it literally, but it seems that this is true. The 'bad' seem to outlast the 'good'.

Good and Evil

In order to prevent this thread from diving straight into a biblical debate of the definiton of evil I will try a more pragmatic approach on the question posed.

I think the question was:
Why does bad seem to outlast the good?

Evil
1. morally bad or wrong; wicked; depraved
2. resulting from or based on conduct regarded as immoral
3. causing pain or trouble; harmful; injurious
4. offensive or disgusting
5. threatening or bringing misfortune; unlucky; disastrous; unfortunate
6. anything that causes misery

Definition from Webster's New World College dictionary 4th ed copyright 2001

Without leaning towards religious preaching and remaining with a more objective approach I think that evil is the path of least resistance. People are related to nature and in nature we see that if a river is blocked then it flows around the obstacle taking the path of least resistance. So too, I believe is the path of bad seemingly outlasting good. How simple is it to hit someone you disagree with? It will always be easier to physically force your opinion. It takes an extraordinary person to recognize hard work and diligently stand their ground in the face of evil things that bad people do. This is the test to rise above nature and acquire true self consciousness. That is humanity and that is to never forget that nothing in life worth having is easily attained.

Or the Billy Joel song hehe.

It seems that alot of bad people seem to have some kind of power say the mayor or the govornment & even the president like Tyrants.
They have power & what do people want more when they have the power?
More Power...
ALot of people who seem to be bad are raised from wealthy or people who dont have to worry about Stress like others do from being poor.
It seems they are exploited by others & why should they care if we cant even afford hospital bills to save our own lives.
Rich people most can care less about other peole & thats why theres Democrats & Republicans & why are Republicans always elected?
Think about it hehe.

No! In fact, the good lives longer, and the evil is eing destroyed. Most cases, At least.

Only The Good Die Young is also an alternative title for Noone But You by Queen

I don't know all that much about music so don't dis me if this is a stupid questions: do other bands give their songs two titles too? Queen did that a few times, e.g. White Queen (As It Began), Teo Torriate (Let Us Cling Together) etc. So once more: do other artists ever do that?

Most of the songs that I know of with parts of the title in brackets, the bracketed parts are just 'subtitles.' EG If I talk about the song that's my current number 2, Roulette Dares (The Haunt of), I don't consider The Haunt of to be the second title, because the second line of the song is "This is the haunt of roulette dares." So, most of the bracketed song I know are of this nature.

There is one counter example, though. My current number 9, Finding my Place, its bracketed portion is indeed a secondary title, rather than a subtitle, since it goes with the preceding track on the CD, Acceptance (Phase 1), as they are both similar in sound and tone.

I didn't know that the whole second title was orininally done by Iron Maiden, though. Interesting fact.

Is that true? Never heard of 'Tribute to Iron Maiden' but I've certainly heard of 'Iron Maiden.' I guess the wording threw me off.

By first, I mean the first to do it with all their songs. I imagine they definitely were not the first to do it with one song, but all of them as TRD says.

Since there's so many songs and many of the names are short it's impossible to not come up with the same song titles. After a short google search I came up with these bands that had a song with that title, although there's probably more. Release dates may not be totally accurate, but the order is clear enough.

Billy Joel -77
Iron Maiden -88
Katmandu -91
Queen -97

In this case it could only be Iron Maiden though, because the next line in the lyric had also been added and that can't be found in the Billy Joel song. I think it's All the evil seem to live forever btw, instead of and the evil.

Now back to the issue. There will always be good and evil in this world and therefore evil will indeed live forever, but so will good. A good person may die young, but so may an evil person. It's just not as noticeable when 'evil' dies. I think it's hard to really call someone evil, it's easier to divide things in good and evil acts. I think it would be next to impossible to not find a single redeeming quality in someone, however small that may be.

Flipside: What if the sum of all the world's action are positive? Does that mean that the world will exist forever? Then what about a sum of zero?

Three possibilities:
1) negative: will have taken end a long time ago
2) positive: will keep on going until it turns negative (if it ever should)
3) sum = 0 : will neither stop nor evolve until this changes.

Only The Good Die Young
(Harris/Dickinson)
The demon in your mind will rape you in your bed at night
The wisdom of ages, the lies and outrages concealed
Time it waits for no man
My future it is revealed
Time it waits for no man
My fate is sealed

If I cancel tomorrow the undead will thank me today
Fly in the face of your prophets I mock your morality plays
The moon is red and bleeding
The sun is burned and black
The book of life is silent
No turning back

Only the good die young
All the evil seem to live forever
Only the good die young
All the evil seem to live forever
Only the good die young
Only the good die young

Mystery madman a victim of cruel charade
Some innocent pawn in an end game one more stalemate
Is death another birthday?
A way to kiss your dreams goodbye?
Do the undead live within us
And look through our eyes?

Walking on water are miracles all you can trust
Measure your coffin does it measure up to your lust?
So I think I'll leave you
With your bishops and your guilt
So until the next time
Have a good sin

Only the good die young
All the evil seem to live forever
Only the good die young
All the evil seem to live forever
Only the good die young
Only the good die young

Seven deadly sins
Seven ways to win
Seven holy paths to hell

Seven downward slopes
Seven bloodied hopes
Seven are your burning fires
Seven your desires...

Only The Good Die Young
Billy Joel

The Stranger Released: 1977

Come out Virginia, don't let me me wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
But sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one
They showed you a statue and told you to pray
They built you a temple and locked you away
But they never told you the price that you pay
For things that you might have done...
Only the good die young

You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd
We ain't too pretty we ain't too proud
We might be laughing a bit too loud
But that never hurt no one
Come on Virginia show me a sign
Send up a signal I'll throw you the line
The stained-glass curtain you're hiding behind
Never lets in the sun
And only the good die young

You got a nice white dress and a party on your confirmation
You got a brand new soul
And a cross of gold
But Virginia they didn't give you quite enough information
You didn't count on me
When you were counting on your rosary

They say there's a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it's better but I say it ain't
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
Sinners are much more fun...
And only the good die young

You say your mother told you all that I could give you was a reputation
She never cared for me
But did she ever say a prayer for me?
