I Love This Thread
I've been posting in this thread for many years now. And after all this time I still say that women are the swords. I wrote about it on page 6 I believe. I have written a great deal more as well but who really has the time to read the wealth of knowledge contained in this thread? (I do)

Being gay is fasionable nowadays.
I don't care for gay people: They don't disgust me, and neither does their sex (come on, most of the heterosexual couples engage in anal sex aswell.) As long as something makes two people happy without hurting anyone is acceptable for me. Even if it's a brother-sister incest. Come on, it does not hurt anyone (unless they will have a child, 50% for severe genetic anomallies), why should I object it? If it makes them happy, let them live their life.
And, gays are fine for me: As a heterosexual man, I like it when there's less competition

Sorry but what total bollocks... don't know about Poland, but I know that there's a lot of places around Australia (actually pretty much all of Australia) that I wouldn't want to be gay - you've got a good chance of some stupid ****head coming along and beating you up for it. Frankly I can't imagine that Poland is particularly enlightened about it either.
The first gay person I ever met was a close friend of mine in Guatemala - he's known that he's gay for 6-7 years now and still won't tell his parents because they'd disown him, lives away from his home town so that he can be himself without everybody finding out that he's gay (and probably getting beat up for it).
The notion that people decide to be gay because it's 'fashionable' is in short total and utter tripe. Nobody would be silly enough to just decide to be gay given the stigma and risk associated with it.
Sorry I'm not particularly diplomatic about this - but seeing the **** that some gay peeps I know have been through makes me less than tolerant of ignorance or bigotry on the subject.

Strangely enough, I agree with Ashrah on this one... I mean those guys who beat gay people up just because they're gay are idiots, but then again, gay people definitely shouldn't make pride parades and convince other people (and children) how perfectly great it is to be gay...
However, in the long run, since overpopulating the planet seems very close (it even happened actually), the solution might be that half the planet's populace turns gay so that in about 50 years the population is already lowered by at least 25%

Fair enough - my sarcasm detector seems to be broken today - but anyway... A lot of people believe that sort of thing here too.
@ Baklava - why shouldn't it be ok to be gay, and why should gay people have to keep it a secret? If the concern is about too much public display of sexuality - presumably you should feel the same about hetero sexuality in public - like probably half the ads ever televised.
Personally my opinion of stuff like gay pride marches and so on is that it's pretty important for a gay person to have that public support - because they certainly take a lot of abuse.
- If you were just joking as well I apologise in advance ... third time lucky perhaps.

Quote: I'd just like to post my opinion about one very common line that is trotted out again and again in discussions like this - which goes something along the lines...
"I'm cool with people being gay if that's what they want, just don't make a big fuss about it and act all gay"
To me this seems to be very blatantly double standards. Do you ever hear gay people making a fuss about hetero people kissing their partners goodbye in public or holding hands?? Of course not. Would it be considered distasteful for someone to try to pick up someone of the opposite sex? Um.... NO. If you don't like being hit on just say so maybe? So why on earth should gay people go and hide their sexuality (and moreover their LOVE for their partner - there is often a tendency to speak of homosexuality only in terms of sex and not relationships) under some stupid biblically-inspired rock?!
I think this was a good post. Even in he first 9 pages of this thread which I read so far, there were not many using the side-switching argument or commenting on the doubleness of some people's stand [if you know the term NIMBY you'll know what I mean].

Let’s get real while I flip through my channels to only come across programs that are convincing our children and us. Gay parades don’t try to convince anyone, you have a choice as to whether you watch it or not. Such as African Americans have their Million Man march and the celebrated white women fighting their way up the never ending cooperate ladder; Gays are just showing that they have begun to teach tolerance. It is sad that they feel the need to have to teach this in the first place.
The fact is every group whether separated by race, culture, religion, or gender has to form these packs to prove they are what they say they are.

I didn't say it isn't ok to be gay. I just said you don't have to parade the streets saying "look at us kids, being gay is awesome"... Not to mention blocking traffic and everything. I mean, if no one else parades the streets, I don't see why they would. Why don't we organise hetero pride parades then? Or basically any group, for anything. Like Portorican pride parades, Heavy Metal pride parades, Jehova's Witness pride parades, Star Wars geek pride parades, social workers pride parades etc. They want to be treated and understood same as other people, yet they are the only ones parading around, implying they differ from everyone else.
It's ok to be gay, to say it, to live with that just like heterosexual people live with their sexual choice. But walking through the streets in pink tangs yelling how you feel sexually is something even completely mentally deranged people refrain from doing.

No Baklava, actually I think you miss the point completely. Heterosexuals don't make parades because nobody would care if they did. The fact that people actually are affronted by gay parades exactly proves the discrimination and/or prejudism that they are fighting. You march, when you are a minority, because you want to show that you are not ashamed of what you are. You don't do it to affront - if people are affronted, that's their own problem, because in the eyes of the belonger of the minority, there's nothing to be affronted by. You have to see it from their point of view, not yours, to understand their motivation.

Yes, perhaps that is true, but my question is: why, of all the minorities around (black people, latinoamericans, Jewish people, etc etc) only gay people make parades?
