IM Delay
I don't know if this is just me, but the IMs that I send here at HC don't seem to get through quickly enough. By the time people get those IMs, they have either logged out or replied to the delayed message, only to realize that I have logged out by the time that message arrives.
I recently decided to test the delay, so I sent a simply, one-word IM to myself, expecting it to arrive immediately, but it took four minutes to process and return. Is there any reason for this delay? Is this happening to anyone else?

This is the way IMs here have always been. There not very "instant."

Well if you wait for the IM in the IM window then it can take some minutes for it to arrive.
If you browse topics on the forum, you'll find that you receive it a lot sooner. Some of the scripts will check for IMs, (like viewthread script) but a few of them will not.
For example the index page script doesn't check for IMs.
There is another thing to consider also. Members will remain up to 10 minutes on the "Who is online" page before their session time out. Sometimes the members may already have left and won't receive your IM until they return next time. (If a member logs out, then member is immediately removed from online members, but if you just browse to another site, then you are not.)

Hey!
I had the almost the same problem as Shadowcaster.
Once upon a time, I sent an IM to Lich_king to ask about how to delete my post. I sent it to him, but I think he did not get it.
So I thought that when sending an IM to the user that is not logged on, he can sometimes get NO IM message. So Djive, please tell me. Can this thing happen???
P.S. It was about the Life Town, but now it is deleted. Still, I dunno if the thread is left there.

I tested again under Djive's suggestion of browsing, and with both the IMs that I tested, a one word and a one sentence IM, the message turned up immediately once I entered a forum.
Is there no way to speed up IM retrieval for those members, and there are a lot, who tend to camp out on the index page, or are they simply stuck with the delay?

New IMs are recieved by loading a forum topics page and view thread page. New IMs are also recieved by opening or reloading the IM window. IM window reloads itself automatically every 50 seconds I think. There is also a reload/recieve button in IM window that allows you to reload it and check for new messages at any moment.

The IM remains on the HC server a few days before it's deleted. If user is away (not logged in) longer than that then the IM will not be delievered.
In the past (think this was fixed recently) it was also possible for IM's to get wasted on the receiving side before reading. It has happened to me a few times. The receiver browses to a new HC page before reading the IM, and the IM would get blanked out. If you did that then you had one blank IM which you had no idea who it was from and what it was about, and no way of retrieving the contents.

I'd like to see a feature where the user can check his/her last 10 received IM's and last 10 sent IM's. This way you have kind of a mini-database. I know there have been many times when I accidentally close one of my IM's or I sent one and then get a vague reply a couple days later and I don't remember what I asked.

Yes, IMs don't blank out anymore since the recent fix - a new blank IM opens, but the original IM does not blank out.
Also at the time of that fix - about a month ago - the period before IM is deleted on a server has been extended from 5 to 14 days.
IM logs would clutter the system up a bit as then you could basically multiply few hundred active users by 20 IMs saved for each = 5000 - 10000 IMs saved.

Hmm, yes that would of course be a problem. Since the IMs are saved any though would it be too much to have a thing where you can bring up the last IM? Either that or have it so that when you reply the last message is automatically added and then you can edit it out if you want. Of course that would also result in some more space used.
