Difficulty is only relative to who you play against since both AI's suck, so silly comment.
Strategically I would say they are at a similar level. AoW's interface is more "user friendly" to me though, which helps gameplay, although that isnt really on the strategic side of things.

i think combat is to much luck as i saw in aow
i saw my pikemen hit one of theirs for like 4 hp and then they killed mine one shot
so if all got lucky against my army i would had no chance

and this is what i saw with my own two eyes
the combat looks just as random as warlords 4
and stop giving me that crap

it's true.. that's the biggest problem with aow + warlords.. combat is so random.. (although it's a bigger problem with warlords) in both games, you can fight the same fight twice, make the exact same moves in battle, and have the battle turn out completely different. HoMM has a good bit of luck in it too, but i think AOW relies too heavily on luck (i mean, as a game designer, you're asking for trouble when an attack can either do 0 damage or 9 damage). the other area where HoMM beats AOW + warlords is it simply has so much more to do on the adventure map, and more buildings in towns.
I think we're both guilty of making judgments without really knowing that much about the game (aow in our case, h4 in your case). still, if you just look at the two games' core elements, h4 has so much more to offer.
I think i be willing to give aow a deeper try if it wasnt so luck based.

I know a fair bit about heroes4, played several online games with pandora (sat through 20min transfers to do so )and played it for many months hotseat and against the AI, so I'm quite familiar with the mechanic. The difference here is I'm not saying heroes4 is a bad game. I believe because there is such a variation in the battle tactics in AoW, it is actually harder to succeed. In heroes, if I throw a gold dragon against a few pikemen...the gold will win everytime of course, this is the same with AoW. The main diff is the hp factor. The highest hp in AoW SM is a gold dragon with 35hp, but if I wanted to attack a gold in a drag cave, I would still need a big army to do so.
Where AoW really shines is siege combat. Its so intricate and detailed with so many variations, you gotta do everything right, a small mistake can cost you the battle, but see, I see that as skill to get it right. Not luck.
And its so not like warlords eithere.

If I had the time, I would have tried AoWsm, but I've come to the conclusion, that every alternative to homm that I've played, has been not up to par vs any heroes variant.
If one of these alternatives had been 'that much better' than homm, you would have seen ToH change course and support that.

Lol Balcough_Dragon here you show that you cant understand AoW basics same as Heroes 4 and Heroes 3, have you seen for example Bone Dragon does 25-50 dam it means if 100 dragons will do 25 dam each it will be 2500 but if they do 50 dam each it will be 5000 it means in first way from 2500 dam will die 16,6 Bone Dragons and in second way from 5000 dam will die 33,3 Bone Dragons as you see there is diference, same way in AoW if unit has stats 10 dam it means it can do from 1-10, and luck is a part in games like Homm and AoW.

I know heroes 4, and dragons cannot kill each other 1 shot cause heroes and aow different games and different planned i just maked example how damage work if 100 dragons will do 50 dam they can kill twice more then if they do 25 dam, but you was suprised when you died from one hit to understand that you need to know wholly game not just some part from it you interpritate on your manner.
