Customized Portraits for WOG

I just came back to playing HOMM3 SOD again and found WOG, installed it along with the ERM tools. Love it so far, very cool. If someone can post a quick link or summary of instructions on how to customize the character portraits in the game, I'd appreciate it. I have my own set in that I would like to use in the game, but have run into so many outdated links trying to find this information. I know it's tiresome for you 'old pros' but if you could provide it to me, that would be great. Thanks.

You can't customize hero faces, but you can replace the old ones.Par exemple:there are two kinds of hero images that are used(small and a little bigger). The bigger ones
start with hpl and the small ones with hps.If you put a .pcx file of size 58x64 with the filename hpl104bm in the heroes \Data folder, you will replace the big portrait (because it starts with hpl) of the number 104 hero in the game(i think it's Gird) which is a Battle Mage (ends with bm)

It's not 46x30!

What is the correct size for the small portraits?

The sizes Fnord gave are correct. I found I did'nt like a lot of the portraits given by some of the sites that offer such pics. I went into fantsy sites, picked the portraits I liked and made my own. Just about all pics in my collection have been replaced, however I did leave most of the special Hero portraits, especially Gelu, of course. Gangrail, KittenAngel, and myself were in the process of making a whole new set of portraits. We all went off on our own tangents, but I feel we may be able to pick up where we left off, as all the pics were just incredible from everyone who got the chance to preview them said so.

Insight

Is there a way to make the new portraits (and other new hero characteristics) show up in the game setup?

I think the portraits show up if you replace the files (in the Data folder). If you do it through ERM, no, because ERM doesn't run until a map loads.

You can change portraits without copying new ones in the heroes Data folder, but you need some tools. See modHomm3 for more info.

So I have to put the pcxs in the ->" data "<-folder. Are you sure?
That doesn't seem to work.
How can anyone do it?

Replacing portraits with erm causes little bug in the graphics (the small pictures have marking/demarking problems).
Ever noticed nagash's portrait is too tall?
It seems to me, the pcxs need 1x1-outlines of a special colour.

For example: a pcx named hpl040wz will replace Astral's big portrait. If you get buggy images, then your portraits have more than 256 colours!

When I use a custom Portrait, how can i use black that is not considered background?
(using Paint to convert to 256 colors)

I am not sure on what your askin but if you want to mk the background of an image black using paint my best advice would be just use the good ole paint brush and fill in round the image.

Consider this ...

Considered background by Homm

When i use black, HoMM regards it as transparent.
Even when I hexedit another colour of the images 256colorpalette (dark blue or dark brown) to black or just close to black.

Slightly off topic

No, that's for adding or modifying graphics. In game, it seems that black is the "transparent" colour.

I remember setting the wrong path for a custom background. One would expect error messages, but the combat took place on a completely black background instead. It was acctually cool - it was like darkness or something!

I believe that index 1 on the palette is taken as the transparent color.  Best bet would be to set index 1 to some garish color like cyan or magenta (which you are unlikely to use) and swap out the now colorful pixels with a black color.
