The Fortress/Swamp town
well,in my opinion the HOMM3 method of army and creature arrangement is better,I would have made 8 levels but with no selection.
Maybe it requires less thinking or less strategy but i belive it's the better way
L1)Gnoll - normal L1 unit with no special skills
L1U)Gnoll Maurderer - has automatic blood lust
L2)Lizardman - like H3,no biggy of a creature
L2U)Lizard warrior - no range penalty
L3)Dark elf - walking creature with high speed
L3U)Shadow Elf - Throwing knives,no special ability
L4)Basilisk - 10% turn enemy to stone
L4U)Greater basilisk(if you can think of a better name please suggest,i couldn't but i think it shouldn't be the name) - 25% turn enemy to stone
L5)Black Beast(looks like a panther with really big fangs and teeth and has acid-green eyes with green gas coming out of them) - no retaliation
L5U)Displacer beast(looks the same as the dark beast but the eye color changes to orange and it has 2 tails on it's back,i might post a picture if i would know how) - Attacks twice
L6)gorgon - 20% of taking an extra unit for each 5 gorgons you have
L6U)Mighty gorgon - 30% of taking an extra unit for each 4 Mighty gorgons you have, breath attack
L7)Wyvern - no special ability
L7U)Spiked wyvern - 35% of poisoning the enemy for 3 rounds
L8)Sand dragon - 20% of paralyzing the enemy, breath attack
L8U)Rust Dragon - 25% of paralyzing the enemy, 25% of poisoning the enemy(could be both), Breath attack
i don't think that there should be a grail creature,it would be to hard to get in my opinion and i don't have any ideas for monsters strong enough.

Can I re-think, please?
L1) Gnoll - bloodlust
L1U) Gnoll Harasser - bloodlust + stun
L2) Lizardsman - ranged + no obstacle penalty
L2U) Lizardsman Warrior - ranged + poison attack + no ob. penalty
L3) Medusa - ranged + stone gaze
L3U) Medusa Matriarch - ranged + long range + stone gaze
L4) Basilisk - stone gaze
L4U) Ancient Basilisk - stone gaze + mind spell immunity + poison
L5) Cockatrice - multiple attack + poison attack + visual attack immunity
L5U) no upg.
L6) Gorgon - death gaze + terror
L6U) Gorgon Beast - death gaze + terror + mind spell immunity
L7) Swamp Monster - devour + swim
L7U) Leviathan - devour + swim + attack twice
L8) Hydra (of course) - devour + multiple attack + no retaliation
L8U) Scylla - devour + multiple attack + no retaliation + acid attack
Maybe this town could be better.

Two thing I don't like in vegita's post:
1) Dragon? No Hydras?
2) Elf? Surely not here...

Yes, I would have to agree with you there. Take out the Elfs, add the Hydra in as a Lv7, and Maybe switch levels with the Gorgon and the Wyvern.

Displacer beast should be high in level and have two special abilities - one is a chance to stun, one is a chance to move attacked stack to a random place in the battlefield (throw those sharpshooters to the center and they're no longer that sharp anymore, eh?)

the hydra's in my opinion should be in the dungeon town, back to where they were in H2,and the shadow elf might not be such a good idea, but it's not too bad, about the beasts, try looking for "displacer beast" in google and see how it looks, black panther with 2 tales that teleports using shadow.
the medusa is in the dungeon town as well and it upgrades to eluryah(one of the 2 sisters of medusa)

for all the hydra fans out there(count me in as one too!)
well, the reason that i didn't put any hydra's in the swamp town is because they're in the dungeon/underground town back where they were in H2.
my design for the Dungeon town is thus:
L1)Troglodyte - can't be blinded
L1U)Infernal troglodyte - cant be blinded and no mind spell effect.
L2)Harpy - like H3&4
L2U)Battle harpy - same
L3)Beholder - paralyzes in close combat
L3U)Evil eye - Stone gaze in close combat
L4)Medusa - no shots this time, normal creature with 15% stone gaze
L4U)Eluryah - becomes an archer that shoots the snakes on her hair(unfortunately she gets bald after 8 arrows)
L5)Minotaur - blood lust only against human creatures
L5U)Minotaur king - Blood lust against all creatures, this time the minotaur king has a mace and not some stupid axe
L6)Manticore - 15% poisoning, 15%paralyzing
L6U)Chimera - Multi direction attack, 25%paralyzing, 20% of poisoning but only the enemy not in front of you(if it attacks 2 enemies in front of you and 1 backwards with the snake's tail)
L7)Hydra - multi direction attack, no retalitation
L7U)scylla - I would agree with regnus_khan about it's abilities and add spell immunity up to L3 spells
L8)Red dragon - Breath attack, spell immunity
L8U)Black dragon - Breath attack, spell immunity, fire spells are deflected on the user.

How about Olympus Cyclops?
How about Ancient Behemoth?
How about Nomad Pathfinder\Raider?
-(this is to all creature\town namers) search for the mythological origin first before you decide "Mega-Cycops"? נו באמת

L7U)Mega cyclops - 35% for breserk, breath attack(with the eye laser)
L8)Behemoth - no special ability
L8U)Frenzied behemoth - always retalitates, even against enemies with special ability for no ret'.
L2U) Orc Harasser or Uruk-hai could sound better.
L3U) I think rogue or rover could be better here.
L5U) Surely disagree... Massive or Mountain troll more likely.
L7) Do not like ability. I think they could destroy walls (Wall Siege) and Gaze of Cyclop (weakens attack, damage and HP a bit)
L7U) Mega Cyclops? #!^%@#*& What do you think we are? Children? NO we aren't. Mega is too 'childish'. Maybe olimpic, king or giant cyclops would be better.
L8) Behemoth - ignores 25% of melee and ranged defence, berserk, mind spell immunitty
L8U) No... Maybe Ancient Behemoth here. Same abilities like behemoth above only ignores 50% of melee and ranged defence, instead of 25%.

well, about the mega cyclops i agree,it is stupid, was taken from a super nintendo RPG,and about the behemoth,i just think it's possible to find a better name than ancient behemoth but ill stick to the ancient in the meantime.
can't see what's wrong with war troll though, i think the name fits quite good.

I agree with Gerdash, Naga is enough.
BTW, did u know that in Indian language Naga is the male and Nagi is the femal ()
Lizzardman is enough. And bring back the old Lizzardman glory, for crying out loud!
In H3, the Lizzardman archers were weaker than the human archers, HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!?!?!?
Does this makes sense?
Human powers + lizzard powers < Human Powers
Well, does it?!?!?!
Anyway Gorgons are swamp habitats (or however u spell it)
So i suggest:
1. Kobold\ Kobold Headhunter
2. Gnoll\ Gnoll Maruader
3. Lizzardman\ Longbow Lizzardman
4. Serpant Fly\ Dragon Fly
5. Wasport\ Poisonous Wasport
6. Basilsik\ Prime Basilisk
7. Gorgon\ Mighty Gorgon
8. Wyvern\ Wyvern Monarch
9. Hydra\ Scylla(fine!)
10. Swamp Dragon\ Rust Dragon

L4)Giant Slug - poison - very low speed
L4)Giant Snail - poison slimy-sticks enemy +very high def - very low speed
to Svarog - "Giant Slug and Giant Snail?! OH, veeeryyy dangerous creatures!"
I`m think that they are really dangerous... with very strong def and can root to the ground (as dendroids in HHM3 do...) AND THE ARE FUNNY!!!!! like imps in HMM3...
About gorgons - Gerdash is right - "why is swamp the natural habitat of gorgons? maybe they were incorrectly implemented in homm3? why is the name 'gorgon' associated with a cow or bull or whatever it was in homm3?"
and I like gorgons because they are ALSO VERY FUNNY!!!
Giant Snail! - Why not?

D&D did not invent the gorgon. In the original mythology, they lived in a cave beyond the Field of Statues. There were three of them, Medusa being one of them.
As far as I know, Heroes does not use creatures that were invented by D&D. Every creature they use either has roots in more ancient mythology or was an invention by themselves. The only exception to the rule that I have been able to find was the Gnoll, but perhaps, I simply haven't found anything yet.

btw dog-faced men are mythological. maybe they are called gnolls or maybe gnolls were inspired by them?
so somehow they chose to have the gorgons the ad&d way. it is somewhat interesting why they chose to depict gorgons as bulls in ad&d.
it may be a good idea to keep ad&d and tolkien etc out of homm. there are enough crazy creatures without those.

But I took so much brilliant creature and hero class ideas from D&D
The Gorgon sisters (Medusa, Eluryah, and whatumightcallhe) lived in some cave and Herculies was supposed to kill one of em:
Medusa, which BTW should like nothing swampy or lizzardlike, she's supposed to be a quite sexy women, with snake hare (actually no, she did not have snake hare)
Hey! another discussion:
Medusa wasn't even supposed to have snake hare, but another monster did - whatumightcallit, which dragged some guy who told the Tojians that the horse is a trap into the water, maybe that can be another swamp creature
