The Conspiracy Theory
In light of the recent events that have taken place in America, I am beginning to consider the possibility of a corrupt government burning right under our noses. Currently there is an astronomical debt, but how could it possibly get SO HIGH? This is something that I simply do not understand.
Recently the state of Maine has misplaced billions of dollars. The money cannot be found anywhere and this is a result of most likely an elaborate system of stealing money. Money has been stolen from Maine's treasury, but no one really seems to be all that upset. I never hear anyone complaining about it. Do Americans really care about anything? It sure doesn't seem like it. I personally think this is directly related to how the media operates today. The media greatly influences what people think. And if the federal government is corrupt enough to steal money, then they will definately be corrupt enough to have control over the media.
Ever since the 60s our view of our government has gone into a great decline. We longer put trust into our government as we once did. Serving office was once viewed as a privilage. People cannot lose faith in their government. People must hold it with great respect. I strongly fear that America will run out the same fate as the great Roman Empire. We are very similar. We both started out as a small, but thriving civilization that rebelled and won independence. We both came to power and had one great rival. For us it would be the Soviet's, for the Romans the Carthagians. However the corruption of the government and the lack of morality ultimately led to the collapse of the greatest, longest standing empire in all of history.

Be careful, RSF. Comparing the US to Rome is considered "wrong" by more liberal types here. They just don't see it.
I've already wrote about it here.
BTW, I plan on running for office, but that will be in 25 years or so.

I for one see it. I thought your thread on the American Roman connection was quite thought-provoking Wolfie. Glad to see others becoming alarmed. Dunno though if the debt can be attributed to "conspiracy" or "stupidity" though.
Say RSF, where have you seen these reports about Maine? Got any more details? Sounds very interesting, man....

I wouldn't say the debt was stupidity, hard to say. There are probably a million reasons for the debt being as high as it is.

Just one correction here. America's neither the greatest, nor the longest standing "empire". the only conncetion it has with the roman empire is the fact that it's a superpower, but there have been many more powerful superpowers in history. USA is not even close to them (considering for how long it's a superpower).

Our Greatest Adversary
Quote: I strongly fear that America will run out the same fate as the great Roman Empire. We are very similar. I disagree. I don't think we can consider ourselves in the mindset of any sort of empire. I think America is more representative of a movement in the historical evolution of mankind. Americans aren't really able to be generalized so much because we have the most diverse population of different cultures in the world.
This country has just as many problems as the the old empires did and more but these new times call for completely different mindsets to start out. Nuclear technology changes everything. Not to mention cloning and other such technological breakthroughs. Comparing us to the romans or any other ancient empire is simply lacking the necessary attributes of a real comparison. Yes, people can say corruption then and corruption now but the difference is the weight of decisions on a much larger scale now.
Example: If I complete this survey of the genetic spectrum for mapping out human genes will I give fuel to the terrorists for biological warfare?
Another example: If create this alloy will it be used in a required filter for making weapons-grade plutonium?
Today we live in a world where the smallest decisions not of the world leaders but the "little guy" can change the world as we know it. It is this kind of responsibility that we humans now face as opposed to yesterday. Yesterday, a technician in the roman army that worked on a ballista had no such responsibility with the world's fate in his hands. If he succeeded then it would fire properly simply destroying a section of the castle wall. If he failed then it would simply malfunction.
Today if a single technician causes error to the space shuttle he could cause it to crash as it is coming in for landing over a heavily populated city bringing hundreds of people to their death.
I believe our greatest adversary today is something I call complacency in our "comfort zones", in a workplace environment. In a world like today a comfort zone can cause people to drop their guard, become a little less task oriented, be less prepared for unplanned variables in task performance, etc... We need people, normal, common, average, to start thinking above their small task. We need people to start looking at the big picture. If that little guy sitting in his basement exploring uncharted biological growth of influenza doesn't stop and ask himself why then we, as a human race, may die because of isolated incidents like that. It's times like that when we are closest to our own extinction. That normal, average guy may not know it but because of some unseen variables not included in his theories he is about to create the next plague of the new millenium. All because he didn't think he was a very important person just fooling around with some shots he got from the local clinic.
Aside from all that, conspiracy theories are all well enough as we common people look to catch them in the act constantly. This is a good situation as I believe it keeps them from taking large world-changing conspiracies to their advantage.

Its always a good idea to try to stay in tune with whats going on, I've noticed something wasn't right long ago. I don't think you should put to much trust in it especially if there is tyranny in the air. If you put to much trust in it, if there is something corrupt going on then you will just be supporting it.

Sounds to me like someone is politely trying to hate the US. Besides I was referring to the Roman Empire not the US. The point was not about the US being this great world power. It was exactly what you said. Corruption. And corruption will lead to it's decline.

I don't see how a diverse population has anything to do with corruption. I don't think you intended it this way, but that could be seen as racist. Anyway, I think that America will fall eventually, but it will probably be from corruption, if not corruption will lead to a shortened lifespan.
So far your other comments have proved that the little guy has more choices in making decisions. Well then good. That means we can do something to stop the corruption. However, this also allows corruption to be far more devastating. By saying that the weight of the decisions are greater, only proves that it's much easier for corruption to lead to the downfall of America than it was during the Roman Empire.

Here you go Redsox I got something for you:
Beware the leader who bangs the drum of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor. For patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and patroitism, will offer up all of their rights to the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Julius Ceasar.

The question shouldnt be: "Is it corrupt?"..
instead, the question should be: "How do we create a stable working system to make sure it can never be corrupt?"
One basic way to do this is increase openness towards the people about what is really going on. The other is giving the people the power to replace their government.
These are represented in reality by media and democracy. However, the media is owned by private or governement interests which means it will be influenced by that and tell its side of the story.
And democracy.. well.. just look at the most recent election and what happend in california.
Maybe "Arnold" will clean it up? Maybe get another Ronald Reagan (actor) as president.. hmm maybe Kirk Douglas, or perhaps Ben affleck (once he grows older). lol
Im hoping it will all improve tho

I don't think that their is, or ever could be a gov't that will be free of corruption.
We do have coalitions for open gov't but some records that have been asked for have not been turned over to the public that easily.
The gov't owns 80% of the media...
And I don't think that we need another Reagan, Reagan is said to be the most corrupt president in US history.

Now there's an innacurate statement if ever I saw one. I know I disagreed, but that doesn't mean I don't see the link you were trying to make. I just thought it was ill thought out and wide of the mark. I also thought you were wrong on fact, not wrong as in it was wrong for you to even try.

And why is that so? Just because I don’t agree with your comparison of USA with the Roman Empire, it doesn’t mean I hate your country. I just think that that comparison is inappropriate, as there were complex and very different historical conditions when these two nations rose to prominence.
I just pointed out that you seem unaware of the trivialness of the USA, compared to the Roman Empire. Peace be with you, RSF.
