Combined creatures
What about a system where you can combine creatures with other creatures to get a new sort of creatures?
Kinda like the combined artifact thingy in HoMM III but with creatures.
For example Unicorns with pikemen would give you the option to let the unicorns be ridden(spelling?) by the pikemen or something like that ...

That is an original idea, but it would be difficult to adapt it to every alignment, since it will be hard in towns like the present asylum to put creatures on top of another. This would be much more feasible with heroes on top of monsters, but this is another topic.
Secondly, from two creatures you get only one, one it should be pretty powerful to convince me to do that. But this could be an option if the spaces in the army would be fewer than the recrutable types in the castle, and this could alow you to combine two small level units into a more powerful one when the overcrowding of your ranks dictates it.

Didn't know that.
Srry, but other than that, why not? In your post are (besides of the hilarious ones) some good ideas ...
It would be a good way to make lower level creatures and artifacts still usefull at later times.

I still think that creature combinations are logical to a degree... as long as we don't go nuts.

@ mods:
take the flootprotection time down plz! I'm not flooding, but have to wait at least 30 seconds every post! And I don't think I'm _THAT_ fast!
@TOG:
Yes off course there should be balancing measures, but that counts for everything. But in my way of seeing it, it's just a way of making those low level crits usefull in later stages of the game. So they don't only get used as necro source (HOHO, remember those ghost vs peasant fights in HoMM II? )

On topic now: Sounds a bit complicated. What if 80 pikemen want to ride 45 Unicorns? If a Trog binds to something else and you blind the combo, what happens? Do Attack/Defense levels change? What about Speed? What if I demand the right to use my Imps to launch a suicide attack on blackies to use up their retaliation?

ok, one by one:
You can only combine 45 of them ...
The combo creatures will be like a new creature, so they get blinded, slowed, hypnotized or whatever like any other creature.
Since speaking programatic terms, it is a new object, so indeed attack, defence, health special abs or whatever can change.
You can reattach them (before combat) just like with the combined artifacts. But you'll have to think of it before combat (just like with so many things, like spreading stacks, changing formation, wearing the chackles etc.)

Well this idea isn't very bad, still it is complicated. I know only one creature - Hydra + Green Dragon = gorynych
I would suggest combining creatures with artifacts:
Troglodyte + Snake Eye (poison ability) =
Venom Troglodyte (or Infernal) with visual attack immunity and poisoning.
Magi + Tome of Fire Magic =
Fire Magi with all fire spells to cast
This is my opinion only, because crossing creatures with 3D graohics would be a menace. Better having different color, attributes (like horns) etc.

Furthermore, crossing creature would be able with 2D graphics only. One suggestion:
Dragon + Lizardsman = Basilisk
Mage + Lich = Lich Mage
There are a lot of suggestion here...

Also, combining creatures with skills:
Combat + Mage = Battle Mage (loads of damage)
Tactics + Thief = Rogue (stealth and more movement and damage)
