Deploying to Iraq, Please advise.

My unit has been placed on alert for a rotation in Iraq. I will be training up for A few Months, Then ship out this fall for A year or more. I don't want to lose contact with my family at home or my HC. family so I purchased A laptop.  It is An hp pavilion ze5580us, It has a Pentium 4, 40 gig hd, and 512m of ram. It also has wireless capabillities. I picked up a world power adapter and surge supressor, as well as an inverter for a power source for when i'm mobile. If any of you heroes can give me some hints about staying on line over there I would appreciate it immencely. If I can't stay online I will just say Farewell to all of you for A year or more.

RedHawk,

I have a few words for you my friend.

From one man to another, I ask you to remember that the Iraqi people are not to blame for their current circumstances. These people have a long and ancient history filled with wars, famine, and dictators. There are many dangerous people in Iraq. This is true whether we see it or not but there are more loving people there who want peace than do the newspapers and televisions report. There are many people starving, without a home, without a hospital near enough, and without a government to place their security in. Some have no sanitation and defecate near to where they and their children live. Remember that they are hungry for many things some of which, are food, shelter, and peace.

When you go to Iraq you represent the entire country of the United States of America. You are our knight that must show both the Iraqi people and the world that Iraqi peace is the ultimate goal. Please help them in any way that you can. If you are ordered to handle Iraqi citizens, children, officials, or prisoners, then do it with compassion for all human beings. Please show them we want to help them by not hurting them.

The Iraqi people may fight and kill american soldiers so as to give us the sign that we should go. If you ever catch yourself wondering why you are there and haven't left yet then I tell you this: Your people care about you. Do not ever forget that. There are many of us, here at home, that are working hard to get you soldiers home to your families. An election is coming up and I intend to do my part and vote for the president who will bring you all home.

I ask you to have mercy because we are not there to judge. Have compassion. I ask you this because the Iraqi people are angry and confused about why we are there. This is no ordinary assignment you are being sent on. It is a mission of peace. Don't kill unless you are ordered to do so. If you follow orders then you are a good soldier. Don't question your superior's orders. Do as you're told and help as many people as you can.

If you return having done terrible things while you were there, how will you live with yourself? Make sure to be an honorable man having a heart filled with compassion and love. It is your duty.

My heart goes with you and my thoughts remain still in your absence. Do your best, as only you can.

Chaos rules in Iraq, and some people blame USA for that. Every good and gentle thing you do there, like helping children, families etc. will make picture of your country in their eyes a little brighter.

red hawk, 1 way I think could work is if you make yourself, family, and friends a WWW2.

But still, no mater what you bring as a unit/military personel,
you could get shot if the wrong guy caught you using it unless everyone knew that your not bad.

Oh, ****! Yuck! The typical pathetic inverted image you guys in the US have about poorer countries. And since when exactly have you become an expert on Iraqi infrastructure?!
Look Consis, I see you have the noblest intentions about Iraq, but the image you have is completely wrong.
FACT 1: You want peace. They want peace.
FACT 2: You are the occupators there.
FACT 3: They want you out of Iraq. The rebels will give their best to shoot every single American soldier if given the chance. (Over 100 people killed in the past 10 days!!!)

MY WISH: May God help and protect you, redhawk. Things sure are like hell there. I hope they won’t send you in dangerous areas (in or around Faluja).

If you go in Iraq, it’ll be one hell of an experience and it’ll change your perception of things for life (if you haven’t been on a foreign mission so far, that is. Even if you have, this is not a peace-keeping one.). Have always in mind that Iraqis are not the “bad guys”, but they really can’t feel anything other than resentment towards Americans, since you’re the occupators there. Don’t go on a shooting spree each time you feel threatened, stay alert and think with a clear head. Otherwise, you’ll have to live with the consequences for the rest of your life. Each and every taken life will haunt you as long as you live. I truly hope that troops will be redrawn from Iraq as soon as possible and your fellas back home will make the right choice on the elections.

Also, are you sure you’ll be allowed to have that laptop with you and uncontrolled access to the Net? I mean info leakage and all that, I don’t know.
If you have access to internet, HC will have a reporter from Iraq all of our own!

I agree. In war it is hard to find the exact thruth, and we often absorb media information without thinking. There are no good and evil, just a group of greedy politicans who exploit the masses. Situation is critical, but on CNN before several months you could see only Iraq people greeting US soldiers, not the starvation and poverty. You could see mass destructing Saddam's statue, but not the line to get water. Iraq is hell now. Redhawk, whatcj your head. Contact us sometimes, tell us you're OK.

Who said anything about it being holy? I didn't say holy anything. Fabricating my statements will make you no less unbelievable than you already are. What I said was knight. There was nothing holy about it. So much for your theory about holiness.

Right, so if a murderer hides in a church with a bazooka and an ak47 then we should simply knock on the door and ask him to come out politely? I'll try and remember that the next time these extremists bomb fellow Iraqis.

Quote:
if you go to north iraq take care of kurds, if you go to south iraq ºii's are dangereous

Is that favoritism? Are you partial to a specific type of people in Iraq? Are you racist?

Quote:
remember you are conqueror in iraq's people eyes

Do you represent the Iraqi people? I think not.

Quote:

Our propaganda? For your information I am well aware of the existence of such rediculous types of publicized advertisements. I know when to question my own government and when to trust them. I am a U.S. citizen and I stand behind my country. It's very easy for you to say such things while hiding behind a computer.

Ridiculing my country won't change the fact that we are there now and many of the people in this country do not agree with that. There are many people here that are trying their best to get the soldiers out of Iraq. I never agreed to send them in the first place. I want them home with their families. My actions and my vote will reflect exactly that.

Yeah, yeah, we're all for peace.  But this isn't some cute little idealogical world we live in.  You're going to be there and we're not.  You're gearing up to go into a nasty hot spot.  Keep your head down and shoot to kill.

If you want to be really creative, soak your bullets in pig's blood so that you can help send your local Iraqi/Arab insurgent back to hell.  Bury your Iraqi enemy with pig entrails covering their body and make it public.

Good luck.  Watch out for IEDs.  And it's better to shoot first, then ask questions later.

Don't volunteer for anything (though in the army you are usually volunteered rather than volunteer) would be good advice...

Oh and on the civilian/enemy thing, an old friend of mine was telling me about what the British used to do in Malaya about the problem of civilians supporting the rebels there. They used to gather them in camps were they were fed, clothed and looked after, but put under strict martial law. Example being curfew, anyone out of their house after nightfall was shot, no questions, no doubts. During daytime each block of the town/city was only allowed out at certain hours for shopping and so on. Brutally harsh, but extremely effective.

Speaking On Such Matters:

(copied from CNN website)
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- British citizen Gary Teeley has been released as a hostage in Iraq, the British Foreign Ministry said Sunday, but there was no word on other civilians held by insurgents, including an American and three Japanese.

Teeley, who lives in the Middle East, was reported missing Thursday and released Sunday.

Adding to the list of hostages, seven Chinese nationals were kidnapped Sunday by gunmen, China's official Xinhua news agency reported early Monday.

The kidnappings took place Sunday in Fallujah, the news agency reported, attributing the information Chinese officials in Baghdad.

Al Arabiya television also reported the kidnappings, saying it had received a videotape from hostage-takers with footage of the captives that it planned to air.

An American hostage, identified as Thomas Hamill, was shown Saturday on news video by the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

The video indicated Hamill was captured between Baghdad and Fallujah, 35 miles (56 kilometers) west of the capital, where U.S. Marines have been fighting insurgents for control of the town.

The network showed a car stopping on a highway and armed masked men getting out and asking journalists to look at Hamill, who was sitting in the back seat next to a gunman.

A journalist asked Hamill what happened, and he replied in a slight Southern U.S. accent that "they attacked our convoy. That's all I'm going to say." He gave his name, then the men got into the car and drove off.

It was unclear if Hamill was referring to an incident Friday when a fuel convoy was attacked near Baghdad International Airport.

The Pentagon said two U.S. soldiers and four civilian contractors -- some of them Americans -- are unaccounted for after the fuel convoy was attacked. The four worked for the same company.

One U.S. soldier and an Iraqi driver were killed in the incident, and 12 people were wounded.

Arabic-language network Al-Jazeera later broadcast video of Hamill sitting in front of an Iraqi flag.

A voice, apparently from one of the abductors, said if U.S. troops did not leave Fallujah by 6 a.m. Sunday (10 p.m. Saturday ET) he would "be treated worse than the four Americans that were killed in Fallujah."

The latter was a reference to the killings of four civilian contractors March 31. Their remains were dragged in the street and hanged from a bridge over the Euphrates River.

Meanwhile, the Japanese Kyodo news agency reported that the three Japanese hostages would be freed at 7 a.m. Sunday (11 p.m. Saturday ET). But that deadline also passed with no word on whether the hostages were let go.

The kidnappers threatened to burn the Japanese hostages alive Sunday unless Japan pulls its troops out of Iraq. (Full story)

About two hours after the deadline, Japan's Jiji news agency reported that Al-Jazeera said the hostages had been released. Al-Jazeera denied reporting that.

The three Japanese civilians -- a journalist, a nongovernmental organization worker and an aid worker -- were kidnapped last week, as were an Arab man from Jerusalem and a Syrian-born Canadian, both aid workers.

Germany's Foreign Ministry said there is a "high probability" that two German security workers missing in Iraq are dead.

They were en route from Amman, Jordan, to Baghdad to work as security guards for the German Embassy when their convoy came under attack Wednesday, according to German state media.

The rest of the convoy arrived in Baghdad, according to the media reports. German officials do not expect to confirm the deaths for several days, until the bodies are recovered.

Seven South Korean Christian missionaries were released Thursday after kidnappers held them for several hours.
