discussion on racism

here is the question
do you think racism is still present, even the opposite of the understood, giving special privilages to someone just because they are the right color?
this is a statement that i have just put into my head.
does every show really need a reference to every demographic?
does everything require a reference to the past and what people had done in the name of the past happenings?
is being politically correct really correct morally?
if there are systems helping people of "minorities" really helping them or are they messing with people of other "minorities/majorities?"
do people really need to be classed more than his/her nationality?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the point i'm getting at is people don't understand that we aren't helping the situation until we put the fact that we are from the same land in this generation.  this isn't something we can just pass over.  i don't understand why things are the way they are.  and what better place to find out about this sort of thing than a place where you can't even prove if the person you are talking to, referring to is a male, female, androgonous, or ai.
I'm going to get bashed so hard for saying this, and, please, no one take this the wrong way way, but I don't think rascism is as big a deal as people make it out to be. All men aren't sexists and all white people aren't biggots. That was the sixties, this is now. When a minority member cries out racism, in my opinion, it's his/her way of saying that they didn't get what they wanted. I'm not saying that there aren't biggots, but culture has gotten rid of 99% of them. As a minority in America I can say first hand that I have been all over the country and have never experienced an ounce of racism in any form at all. So, I have to say that affirmative action and all of that nonsense is unnecessary. I think that the constant portrayal of minorities as victims is having a negative effect on society. The pendulum has swung too far the other way. In America today, all-black colleges are allowed, but there can't be all-white ones. There can be scholarships for minorites and women, but not for white people(technically there CAN be, but look at what happened to those couple of guys who tried it), there are all-black nightclubs, but there can't be all-white nightclubs, etc. And no, I'm not white so don't play that card.
Don't forget the South African student in a high school in my city that signed up for an African-American scholorship.  He was white, so he was suspended from school for several days.
Is this not racism?
I agree with you Aquaman.  Racism still exists, there's no doubt about that.  But, it is not as big an issue as it once was.
i agree with both of you
today's system hates crackers
i'm classified as a straght white male, which means everyone hates me.
in reality, i'm partially cherokee, which means i can be obligated to get help as well, but because of my family's movement, i cannot get this support.  so i'm pretty much a cracker there too.  i've noticed the reverse racism from the sharpened edge of the system and i can't help but feel the sting.  i cannot get work where i live because of the choices if have made, not to mention that my work ethics, which makes no sense to the people i attempt to get work at.  i'm doing an experiment now with the government to see if i can get assistance being more or less homeless, unemployed, and a white heterosexual male.  i haven't said that i was on any of the forms i filled out, because that is morally wrong to me to classify people.  the phrase in the declaration of independance "all men are created equal" kind of made this the way it should.  people are not even referring to this line to make people equal.
I agree with aquaman. In my opinion, if any sides are racist or sexist today, its the ones that are complaining. Black comedians often make fun of white people but if the opposite is done it would be considered extreme racism. Women get as much rights as men in the workplace. All of those feminists walking around saying such terrible things about men... imagine if I said that all women were pigs.
North America today is just too concerned about racism and they are in fact creating more discrimination by it. For example, workplaces would often hire a minority worker as a 'token' even though his skills are inferiour. This is not justice.
I also don't really mind racist jokes - against my race, even. But only as long as they are just jokes and not meant to be insulting. People are just too damn sensitive.
True racism is dead and that's good.
righto
the old racism is gone, like i had said, the new racism is the oposite, a different clique of what is acceptable, and demographically motivated jokes are funny, but not meant to hurt, but for laughter.  i can make a white friend of mine mad by calling him a cracker or bobo, honky, whitey anything, but he will still say nigeria with a few letters switched, dropped, and a copy of a letter added.  i don't know if i can say that without being yelled at by anyone, because of the way things are.  but you understand.  no one minds the word except for crackers.  i was actually told not to say that when i was singing a nelly song in kereoke, but when i asked the only person in the building if she believed it was offensive, she said no, she actually didn't care.
Reality check every where you go theres racism towards some kind of race.
Theres still murders because of a persons race.
Theres still old groups that should of went down with the wars.
Gang related brought in alot of murders.
So many that still are racist you would be surprised.
It is true tho it is not as bad as it wasmany yrs before i was born.
sure, there are closed minds that make people think that the declaration of independance for instance only applies to their subtype, which at one point it only referred to white male landowners.  but times have changed.
in gang violence, they kill, hurt, maim people of the other groups mainly, regardless of color.  the idea that someone is special just because they are "in the wrong neighborhood" is a form of racism on it's own, but in essence, it is on both ways done.  a racist based crime is only a term used to describe a cracker or what have you going into an area where the groups there don't like that set type in the first place due to something that happened many years ago.
abstract concepts are also technically race crimes in this day and age.  concider the muslim/jewish hatred for eachother.  they are relatively the same in many ways, but just because of a few different ideals, they want to wipe out the other party.
There is racism everywhere.  Even in this thread, there is racism.  So far in this thread I've seen the word "cracker" at least three times, but I haven't seen the word "snow" not even once.
In today’s society they will almost always hire a minority over a white person.  Now that is racist.
Racism shouldn't be a big deal.  People should just stop getting but hurt over everything.  Racism probably wouldn't be a big deal if there weren’t all the Politically Correct B.S.
Dingo, a five line post?!  Are you losing your touch?
There's a group of black kids at my school who were harassing me, calling me racist names. I was just walking down the hall.
I wasn't as insulted as I was shocked.  I was genuinely shocked, I've never had anything like that happen to me before.  I thought society could have moved on.  I was more shocked that this group of black kids was doing this when 90% of the school is white, probably, a vast majority.
I don't think racist names have any purpose in this thread, whether they're about white people or not.  I'm sure everyone will know what you mean if you don't use them.
Ok, well heres a racist joke.  It can be offensive, and therefore it probably can make me lose a Qp.  I'll probably delete it later.  I heard this one a few days ago.
This white woman goes to a night club.  She is there alone and she is trying to get a man.  While she is sitting at the bar, she sees a black man in the crowd.  He is quite attractive, and this woman wants to get laid.  When she sees the man see thinks to herself, "Hmmmm, a black man, he must have a big dick."  So she dances with him.  Eventually she takes him back to her house.  The woman is laying on the bed(shes ready for sex).  She looks at the man and says, "Show me what black people do best."  So the man punches her in the face and takes her TV.
Can See It Both Ways
Yeah, I agree with everything I've read here.  At times it seems like racism is dead, but then I still confront it.
The white guy in the next block where I grew up did 3 years for killing a black man in a racist fight.  Seems like a very little amount of time to do for murder.
My Mom and many people of her generation still hold some racist ideas.  After all, she's from a time when slavery had only been 60 years before and way before Affirmative Action.
I'm racist.  I like whites, blacks, hispanics, asians, and native americans, but no matter how hard I've tried I still don't like Middle Easterners, and people from India and Pakistan.  I've met them as individuals and liked them as people, but just to look at them is something I don't relate to.
I always thought I was above racism, but at this point it's easier just to admit my true feelings than pretend I can still work them out.
I think it depends upon the part of the country too.  I saw a lot more blatant racism in the South or Boston than I did in other parts of the U.S.
Good Luck to Everyone, though.  I'm definitely a "live and let live" person and no one should have any less rights than anyone else.
And just as "colored" over time was replaced by black, "minority" needs to be replaced too; it is an inaccurate and derogatory term.
I don't quite agree with you there.
Racism isn't about discrimination because of someones 'race'. Racism is the belief that some 'races' are better than others. And this racism still exists.
I come from a small village in Norway, and the people here are extremely racist. In my class, we were 18 students, and when we discussed racism and immigration, it was me and one other against the rest of the class. The arguments of the others was of this kind: "Negroes are so stupid, they should be shot." "East europeans aren't smart enough to do other jobs than picking strawberries!" and so on...
It must be said, that this was an relatively isolated village, and that it had never lived anyone of the 'races' they disliked so much there.
While you Americans are 'lucky' enough to live in a multicultural society (the reason I wrote'lucky', is that the slaves who was brought there against their will wouldn't agree with me if I called them 'lucky'...), we norwegians live in a relatively homogenic culture. OK, we have about 20 000 Lapps, and perhaps 80 000 refugees of different nationalities, bot the rest of Norways ca. 5 million inhabitants are Norwegians, and the non-Norwegian people 'usually' (God, I hate generalizations....) live in the less attractive parts of the capital, and the government's integration policy are a failure.
Americans, remember this: No matter how much we Europeans snow about how 'evil' you are, you are still, despite your 'flaws', lucky enough to live in a better country than us. (despite your, IMO, wrong choises concerning economy and social politics.. But that's just my opinion, and has nothing to do with this topic...)
it does work, and it answers a question that i had put forth.
but, what i am trying to understand is if equality means equal rights, than why are rights molded and changed to better suit a need that isn't as needed anymore.  in america, there hasn't been slavery of any kind since it was abolished.  people don't know what it is like to be a slave just as we don't know what it is like to be a strawberry.  how can someone relate to that or the owning of another person.  i would like to be a pet of someone, feeling that a sort of ownership over me as if i were an animal that is thought of to be accepted to be owned.  that is similar, but still not in the same field.
people need to unlearn all the things they think are true, right and whatever.  racism is a token term.  it's more like reverse racism nowdays, like i had said.  the people that feel discriminated against are riding higher on the hog than the people that could have ever written the laws that gives them these benifits.  as my friend had drilled into my head repeatedly, that it is good to give them benefits for things that don't have any pertinance in these days.
take the terms i'm gonna put here, and tell me which one sounds wrong:
white pride
black pride
now as she had put it, one way sounds better because it represents a fight for equality that hasn't really been going on for 30+years wheras the other is, as it was quaintly put is a representation of hate...
which is which?
white pride sounds wrong to me and i'm a cracker
black pride does sound good for that matter.
now think who will not want to take pride in a color of their skin/herritage/etc.  this brings up an idea that it is morally acceptable to be something that you cannot choose to be on birth.  this is inherently wrong.
from now on, if the field for race comes up, put a number, a color, anything irrelevant to any sort of actual thing.  or put the wrong thing there.  this is what i'm getting at.  for me, i'm gonna say i'm purple when someone asks.  that shouldn't matter, or for that matter i'm american, which she also feels to be racist.  she would claim a country that her family hasn't been part of in at least 2 generations.
