Some questions to all HOMM-players...
Greetings from the icecold North, everyone!
I am a new member of Heroes community, though I consider myself an experienced HOMM-player. If have followed this website with interest for some time now, and decided to join some days ago. I must give the initiators credit for an extremely well-designed and systematic site. I also find several of the forums very interesting.
Especially some of the articles in The Library of Enlightenment are interesting. Anquelito has done some valuable research, I see.
I would very much like to come and play online with some of you boys (and girls), but my internet-connection is not suitable yet. In a short time however I hope to be able to come to the zone and participate. I have some concerns, however.
I have read that the mantra in the ToH is "no rules." I am not altoghether happy with this, although I can understand the motivation behind. But setting some rules on beforehand would not necessarily have to be a strategy to improve one's chances of winning. Very often one plays random maps, and there is no telling what castle one might end up with, and therefore it is also impossible to design rules which will favourize you in any manner.
In my opinion there are some minor flaws to HOMM, albeit a great game. I have already mentioned them in my first post some days ago. However, this time I would like to ask some questions to all of you HOMM-players.
I shall name some constraints and changes to the normal rules of HOMM, and I hope I will get some answers, so that I can see if I am truly alone with these opinions.
First of all, I dislike "Dimension Door." This spell is in my opinion overly powerful. The one who gets this one first, has an advantage which is too great, and more significantly one that is not based on skill, but luck. I also think "Town Portal" is somewhat too powerful, although I am ready to accept this.
Secondly, I am not a fan of "greater glory." True, it is extremely exciting to see if wandering creatures will join you. But I think we all not that sometimes great numbers of 7th level Creatures may join you. When that happens, the game is over, once again more based on mere luck than anything else. Perhaps someone would say: "But the opponent has just as big chances of getting 7th levels with "greater glory."" True, but what if he doesn't? Someone might say: "Tough luck." But that is just immoral too me. So my suggestion would be to allow no greater unit than level 3 to join a hero.
Thirdly, A carthographer on land ruins everything, the way I see it. It is not exciting too uncover the whole map like that.
In addition, I am not a fan of hit 'n run tactics. So, those were the four main culprits, the way I see it. I hope many of you will write in and tell me whether, to what extent and why you agree or disagree with my "ideal rules." And what are the chances that such rules could be respected in online games?
