Weekly Windows hints & tips
I will port a weekly Micro$oft Windows hint, Tip or Tric here
(At least, as long as it is appreciated at all)
also read this topic
Internet connection speed up
Windows XP reserves some 20% of your I-net conection to guarantee QoS protocol data transfer.
Thus theoratically your connection is 20% slower than it should be.
(Only QoS capable programs use this reserved 20%..)
To change this:
Log on as Administrator
note:
Loging on as Administrator -> log off -> at the logon screen hold Ctrl+Alt+Del -> in the user field type 'Administrator'
Click ->start->run-> type in: gpedit.msc
- expand the Computer configuration branch
- Expand the Administrative templates branch
- Expand the Network branch
- Highlight the QoS Packet Scheduler in left window
- In right window double click the limit reservable bandwidth setting
- On setting tab check the enabled option
- Where it says Bandwidth limit %, change it to read what ever percent you want to reserve for QoS-aware applications
Click OK and exit the group policy editor
After you have rebooted it will be changed
However; when using a lot of QoS applications (like -video- streaming media and IP telephony) you should consider not to lower the percentage too much

Yes, I am sure
I had my doubts for usefullness at first too
but
I 've done it some time ago
No problems since
BTW: I has nothing too do with internet 'staying up' but only with reserverd bandwith for QoS data

I agree on this Lith
but as the Itfatcs.biz site says:
Market researcher IDC expects to announce within weeks that Linux PC market share in 2003 hit 3.2%, overtaking Apple Computer Inc.'s MacOS. And the researcher expects Linux to capture 6% of this market by 2007. That's still tiny compared with Microsoft's 94% share.
Most computers still use Microsft with Windows as most used OS, my tips can be usefull to alot of people here

Desktop Items, AutoPlay & new programs installed
Its been a while, I am sorry for that
But I will try to keep this topic up to date. (as long as it is appreciated)
Desktop
When you have a fresh Windows Xp installation you might notice that your desktop is almost empty.
To visualize the items you are familiar with take the next few steps:
- Right-click anywhere on the desktop (empty space, NOT within another window)
- click Properties
- Click the Desktop tab
- click on Customize Desktop
- Put a check mark in the boxes next to the items you want to be visual on the desktop.
FI: My Documents, My Computer, or Internet Explorer
- Click OK and voila there they are again
Autoplay
Annoying.. In my opinion the autoplay function is pretty annoying.
It can be turned off though:
- Open My Computer
- Right-click on your CD ROM drive icon and choose Properties
- Click on the Auto Play tab
- In the drop down box you can choose the Action for each choice shown in the drop down box
Or
To turn off autoplay completely!
- Go to Start
- Run
- type in gpedit.msc and click OK
- choose Computer Configuration
- choose Administrative Template
- choose System
- locate and double click Turn off Autoplay
- click on Enable in the new window
- Click OK
- close the grouppolicy editor
Recently installed programs
Another feature which can become very annoying is the 'Recently installed programs' message.
To remove these 'pop-ups', Internet users get enuff anyway, take these actions;
- Click Start
- right-click at the top of the Start menu where your name is displayed
- click Properties
- In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box (on the Start Menu tab), click Customize
- Click the Advanced tab
- clear the Highlight newly installed programs check box
- click OK
- and click OK again

In Windows XP (proff) there is, CS..
