Eurovision Song Contest
The crappy festival is on the go now.
The final is on Saturday.
There are only snowtish songs, but one or two good ones can be found from time to time. For eg this year, I really liked Ukraine's song (and that gladiator chick too).
So, what do ya all think.(if anyone watches) Who'll win?

The whole thing is too political for me to really bother with it. At least half the countries you can guess what their votes will be before the songs have been heard. Makes it a bit pointless really

Well even one point would be an improvement on UK's effort last year.
'Nil-points'
It is just a pointless overly camp load of nonsense.
Although Ireland usually wins
There was a joke going about that we deliberately picked bad acts for the last few years because hosting it every year was going to bankrupt the country

Well, there is a lot of politics in there, but politics cant bring you to the top places. after all the song matters too.
take a look at UK. you scored 0 last year, and few years before you were among the toip countries. Some serious political defeat, huh? hell no, your song was disguisting last year. 0 points were well deserved.
On the other hand, this year, there are like 7 out of 10 finalists from the Balkans from the qualifications. We outnumbered the others through politics (balkanization of europe ), but I'm not sure if the winner needs only that.

Rumor Control
Hey, European music lovers, I heard a rumor...
Is it true that the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest receives a free ticket to the United States and an American recording contract?
By the way, what ever happened to Oasis, the self-proclaimed "Were the next Beatles"? I liked a few of their songs, like Champagne Supernova. Just curious...

I didn't say political votes won the contest, but they do dominate it. It's extremely rare for France to give us anything or if they do it's normally not much. Greece always seems to vote highly for Cyprus and vice Versa, and almost never for Turkey IIRC also. Just two examples. Also language barriers is a thing as well because I heard once that Abba's winning entry had been sung at the contest the year before, but in Swedish, and flopped. In english it won.
Politics won't win, but who cares who wins? In my experience, I can only think of 3 people or groups who have sung for it and actually been a sucess here afterwards (or continued to be), namely Abba, Cliff Richard and someone who's name escapes me. Most of the music is awful to be frank to my ears no matter where it's from. The contest is a joke and should be treated that way. Any eurovision contest that is hosted in Israel because they won the last one... well that says it all really.
It's a farce and is treated as so by most people I know, and rightly so
Oh and Khayman, they've realeased at least 2 Albums that I know of since the one Champagne Supernova was on came out

No man, this has nothing to do with quality music, like Oasis. This is just the opposite.
However, there's one contestant from each european country, so its kind a interesting to see who'll win.
And provincial people here take it soooo seriously. they think that is our only chance to show foreigners that we're "better" than them in something. You should feel the euforia here. poor poor people...

Well, turkey won the last one and it's hosted by turkey.
when israel won it, they hosted it. i can see no problem here.
but you are right about the music being painful to listen to. Why don't they just send at least medium artists? And it's such an interesting concept, since it drives the nation together and breaks language barriers (at least until everyone started singing in english )

Yes but the Israeli singer was a transexual.
You gotta give them some credit for that.
I mean, she had real balls to get up on that stage

when israel won it, they hosted it. i can see no problem here.
1) Pull out an atlas of the world
2) Work out which continent Israel is in (clue, it begins with As)
3) Work out why the eurovision song contest is called such
4) See problem.
There's a legitimate reason that they play in europe for world cup football qualifiers (ie they can't play in the asian qualifiers in case they draw Iran or Iraq for example). There's no reason for Israel to be in Eurovision. Turkey is at least partly in Europe.

No, there have been few interesting songs really, but they were most folk with a wonderful tune. And couple of more decent ones too. But that's far from enough.
example:
This year is Ukraine. Last year was Belgium. Oh, and Turkey's got a ska band fighting for them this year!
although greece and cyprus always trade points, and i can say even more examples like this, I do think the winner (and top countries) is always the most popular among the general public.
Has anybody actually watched the qualifications here beside me?

I haven't watched the qualifications, and I have't been so interested in this. But some days ago, I heard a song where the singer said like only 5 word "disco, disco" and something more. I can't see why it won even the regional final!
