TBS Clash: HOMM vs. Disciples vs. Age of Wonders

The Heroes series are becoming a classic and HOMM 3 is definetly a work of art. But on its way to becoming the most loved Turn Based Strategy Game, it had some serious competition. I mention here two games that I've enjoyed very much "Disciples - The Sacred lands" & "Age of Wonders".
Both were fun to play and both had some good and inovational features. If you have played theese games, liked them or disliked them, you are welcome to post your opinions here. In the end we shall see wich of theese games can really compete with Heroes of Might and Magic.

By the way, if you have a TBS Game you would like to bring in discussion, there's no problem with me!

Age of Wonders has some great features that cpuld be incorporated into heroes, but it has a very tedious micromanagement feel to it.  There are too many creatures & towns to control and the magic system is difficult to use.  I have played the campaigns and enjoyed them but after playing for a while I have to quit. Homm on the other hand plays well and sometimes you have to be dragged away from the computer.

Wow, two people who actually liked fantasy general as much as I did.  Also warlords II was great, along with disciples, age of wonders, and two others...masters of magic (great game), and lords of magic.

Hehe

master of magic... great game, too bad i can't find it anymore, i'd still play it. I mean Heroes 4 will be just a higher version of master of magic, with the heroes system and all

Master of Magic

I never did play that game... I was curious about it when it came out I remember, and also Lords of Magic, but at that time I was playing too many other games to buy it, and it's not until now I'm curious, but I still have too many other games to play it probably. I am a fan of all games made on Panzer General engine actually, Fantasy General, Warhammer(Chaos something), Panzer General II(favorite wwII game besides High Command)ugh, I know there are two other games made on that engine also besides the ones in that warfare theme, one other fantasy one, and some weird one with armeggedon over, and humanity fighting in the rubble, was a fun game in itself, but graphics and bugs made it crappy.

Who else here plays STCommand, or Homeworld Cataclysm? Both great games I think, though Homeworld has a little bit of an edge with the battles, I mean- that is the system I always wanted for space battles, 3rd spatial movement and everything, totally awesome. The ship detail and some command functions of STCommand are better though, if those two games could be incorporated...

turn based favs

I liked Fantasy General. Warhammer (Chaos Gate) is a nice game too... but I got tired of playing them after some time... IMO HoMM has a much greater "replay value".. don't know why

beside fantasy, I also like the sci-fi scenario... Master of Orion 2 is a great one! (Psilons rule ) Star General (based on the Panzer General engine) was nice, but far too easy against the AI.

Hey, and not to forget the grandfather of tbs games: Civilization

Besides homm series, I like the following:-

Fantasy general: very mind-challenging, it is one of the TBS game that I got to reload for several times or got beaten up. or maybe I'm too young and my strategic mind not yet fully developed that time.

Masters of Magic: definitely my favorite, being an ancient game, its gameplay, content and replayability are still great even played today. Graphics do need improvement though.
(But I think Masters of Orion is not as good as MoM, a bit too tedious and boring at the late stage of game after u have built that supreme doom star.....)

Civilization series: good game, it is cool to see the civilization u "create" crash other great civilizations.

Sango series (in Chinese and Japanese, dunno whether it got English version or not): great game coz I love the history of Three Kingdoms, the age of legendary heroes and strategists......

About Disciples

It seems like few people have played "Disciples - The Sacred Lands". It is a very nice game, the feature that impressed  me the most was the independent upgrades of creatures. But something that really sucks in this game is the Fortress Guardian, the big-ass 250 HP, motherfu**er shooting everybody. It's almost impossible to kick his behind.

how could I forget?

there's one round-based series I forgot... Jagged Alliance!

Loved all titles.. okay, replay value is not as high as HoMM when the campaign is over, but till then it's lots of fun. Has anyone played Multiplayer (JA Deadly Games) yet?

How about Close Combat series?

Some very good titles in there; I played Clsoe Combat The Russian Front endlessly for the first 4 months after it came out. A Bridge Too Far was also good- Jagged Alliance isn't bad, but it's a little different.

Anyone here play RPG's? I haven't played one until Baldur's Gate II since Betrayal at Krondor, but I am in the midst of Shadows of Amn now and it's very good, better than I expected actually, I was just going to try it out, but now I'm halfway through the game I think and trying to get my Fighter who dualclassed to a thief to survive the battle with with the Harpers. I actually decided to try it out since H4 supposedly alot more RPG like, I just wanted to see what they meant by that, it remains to be seen exactly how many RPG elements make it into H4.

Have to agree with halie and others.   The originals are often the best...civilization series rocked (although call to power was way to buggy...and call to power II won't get my money).

But, one everyone seems to have forgotten (old school a bit) or maybe just didn't like:

X-COM series?!?

The last one (which was a whole new game, kinda like jedi fighter or whatever that is called, kinda sucked) but the first three (and especially the 3rd) was very much 'kick @ss'..what the heck was that called again....damn I'm too tired to remember.

Perhaps these games are a bit 'off track' because they weren't good for head to head play....but still great mix of civilazation meets master of orion meets [insert decent graphics game here]

JTL, actually I didn't play XCOM at its time.. got it on a computer magazine CD for free and liked it. Had to slow my computer down to play it
But I prefer those other games mentioned, cause in XCOM (besides the graphics ) my people just died too fast, so that I didn't have a "personal relationship" to them (like in Jagged Alliance).
Call To Power wasn't great, that's right... Civ II was a legitimate follow-up, Alpha Centauri is also cool (tho I didn't play it too often)
Btw, I call myself Haile (like that Ethopian runner)

RPGs... played The Bards's Tale on my C64 loooong ago
Bought Baldur's Gate as a budget, great game... if I hadn't joined ToH last December, I definitely would have solved it... but now I'm still stuck in Chapter 4

Well, that underdog.org site has stolen my attention- no more time for H3 for at least a month as I play all the games I missed and a few I lost the diskettes too that I always wanted to go back and try one last scenario...

What a fall/winter

On a sidenote, the lovers of Turn Based Strategy (most of us, I guess) are gonna have a really big party going on this fall/winter.

The three greatest (in my book) of the TBS genre, are ready for their sequels: Our very beloved HOMM series, the Civilization series (Civ3 ante portas) and the Master of Orion (MOO3 is going out in September/October - they say).

So... rejoice! This is our best winter! (and my wife's worst... oh, she's gonna give me a hard time when I start playing those...)

Couln't agree more Ubik...

I think I have to find some money before those games arrive. Maybe some of them will be late and won't arrive at the same day into Europe.
I'm kinda looking forward to christmas more than in recent years as there are such a great games coming up.

Be sure to visit the Underdogs site, it's one of the best in the net in my opinion and someone is doing amazing job with that. And no, this isn't commercial, this is just one of the visitors humble opinion.
