Quote: Was out of town a couple days. Just caught the red-eye home.
I'll look at your suggestions in detail tomorrow.
I'll generate that report and send it when I can here.
Basically, I'm baffled. The CD isn't scratched even a little. I've scanned my hard drive for errors using a variety of tools. The CD is fine since I tested it on other systems.
Other people play it fine with xp pro and the latest version of DX. I don't see why I cannot.
To the poster several posts up - thanks for the insight, but my problem isn't trying to play off the install disk.
And my old PC is a 233 with a broken fan that runs heroes like a lawnmower in long weeds. Just about unplayable.
The game is playable. Reason: HoMM3C came with a last minute, compacted newer version that supposedly combines all of the three version into one(ver. 4.0). It's so compacted that it ended up only 433kb in main program's size.
What you'll need to do is go through the CelestialHeavens web-site and search for the Mod site of In Wake of Gods. Use that link. Then go onto the downloads module then use the uppermost link of Other Stuff.
On that page, you will find the real program file of HoMM3-Shadow of Death(Heroes3.exe), download it into your 3DO folder which is in the Program Files Main Folder. Delete the Previous Heroes3.exe(433Kb in size). You will see the new Heroes3.exe(3,200Kb)which is the true game's version of 3.0(applying the 1.4patch will also help as a bonus).
Back onto the previous page, download the Allinon.zip file to upgrade further your version of 3.0 to 3.5.8f of the Mod of W.o.G.
It also bring your game to a fully playable version dating Summer 2004. Which in turn was made to run after the SP2 has been fully implented onto Win XP(Home of Pro. does not matter at this point).
Your Wog.exe and no longer Heroes3.exe will now be 3,600+Kb in size now.
Enjoy this newer 2004 version of HoMM3!!

CD might have been damaged, files corrupted, lots of reasons.
Does the CD look O.K.? Scratches? Grease?

I got HoMM3 Complete (exe v4.0.0.0) from Amazon.com (I really miss going around and killing stuff). I have WinXP Pro and the game installed fine, but every several hours WinXP kills the game with "Heroes has encountered a problem and must shut down" -- not exactly the OP problem, but has anyone experienced this? fixed this?

Quote: I searched every topic I could find over the last year for this and couldn't find help for my particular problem.
I am running windows XP and got Heroes 3 Complete to install without a hitch. However, it will not play.
When I attempt to run the executeable, it opens the loading game screen and then brings up the Microsoft message saying "Heroes has encountered a problem and must shut down" with the send/don't send option. I've tried in other compatability modes to no avail.
I have a purchased copy. Non-pirated. Not burned. Not cracked.
I have found no available windows patches in my searching.
If anyone could direct me to fix this issue, I would be most appreciative.
If I overlooked something obvious, I apologize for beating a dead horse.
I had exact same problem. I reinstalled Windows XP Professional and it worked. There's something wrong with WinXPPro, cuz even now all my games crash sometimes. Every single one of them. If this happens to you make sure you save a lot... that is if you even get the game working. As I said, try reinstalling Windows XP and reinstalling all your programs. *sarcastic* Shouldn't take more than an afternoon, no offense

Well here's my gripe.
Heroes 3 Platinum and Windows XP Pro.
The game works fine most of the time, but it invariably crashes in a nasty way that forces a button-restart. The screen becomes slightly distorted at the bottom, the computer becomes wholly unresponsive to my keyboard and mouse's commands and after a few seconds the sound stops (sometimes it comes back after a few seconds and stops again etc., sometimes it stays silent and once it even bounced back from this condition).
Since it won't let me do anything, a screenshot is obviously not possible.
I should also mention that I run youtube on Firefox when I play it, and it seems to be the real problem; any way I can set Firefox up to get around this?

You have to finish all the campaigns in the same save.
Finish one campaign and after the ending cinematics you return to the camnpaigns screen. Pick a new campaign from there, finish it, repeat.
New ones unlock.
You should see the tick on the campaign you've completed in that save.
@rottenvenic: tried playing in windowed mode?

Please somebody help me!
I'm a huge fan of the might and magic series but HOMM3 crashes frequently.
I have the same computer, the same original game (special edition all heroes games) and everything was working perfect for years.
Now since some latest windows updates and driver updates from Nvidia I can start HOMM3, but after a minute the mouse stops responding, the keyboard stops responding and I can exit the game only by crtl/alt/del...
I'ts so confusing. I tried everything. Older Nvidia drivers, recent Nvidia drivers, BETA Nvidia drivers, I tried all different compatibility modes in windows, I closed hardware accelaration, I uninstalled WOG and reinstalled HOMM3, F4 for change to window mode, I tried different resolutions en 16 bit mode, but nothing seems to work anymore.
So I thought it was SP3 for WinXP pro what causes the problem. I formatted my disc, I installed Windows again, but the same problem over and over again.
The strange thing is that I almost got all games to work on my PC. Newer games, older games HOMM4 no problem, HOMM5 no problem, the older Warlords serie no problem and one month before also HOMM3 was working without crashes.
Do somebody have the same problem and give me an advice how I get HOMM3 working again???

Try to turn the sound off. When in game, under system options, turn Music options and Effects options off. Maybe it works

HoMM III Complete runs fine under W7 if you start the game in 98/Me compatibility mode.

As someone already mentioned it has something to do with your Sound drivers and DX. Not sure how to fix it; but I know thats the problem; compatibility mode is crapola; gotta find a way to fix your sound driver.

Try this: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/start-an-application-assigned-to-a-specific-cpu-in-windows-vista/
There could also be a problem with your gfx hardware drivers (update them).
Also remember to install the games after changing your system language into english US mode

Btw:
If u r runnin xp, the advise above from LucJ..should solve the problem. Still you probably have to install H3 thru english u.s. language.
Homm 3 is apparently rewritten by vcmi project, hopefully to throw off all bugs and running problems that have haunted the game for a long time.
The WoG mod/addon 3.58f for Homm3 : I encountered some Direct draw errors when running it, they keep coming back. Generally I donīt care anymore as "WoG" is pretty much worse than it could have been (poor language, idiotic campaigns etc.). The idea is fine though.
H4 is a little worse for me. I cannot run the game properly at all, except that it went fine on my old Win2000 Pro OS for some weird reason.

Heroes III complete XP help
Alot of people re-posted the same answers obviously without reading the earlier posts.
A) I own all the heroes games (yes I bought them)
B) They all seem to hate windows XP regardless. the stuff happening in the background doesn't settle with the game.
B2)In some installs there's a glitch or something where the save folder isn't created and it will crash after you end your first turn while attempting to auto-save. You need to make a new folder and call it "games" (the word in the quotations)
C)To improve your situation. You MUST first unstall the damned game. Most problems arise with direct X and sound.
This game I think comes with direct X 8.1? Reverting back (some installers don't let you revert and tell you that you have a newer version you must find one that lets you install anyway) to the older version THEN installing the game seems to remedy most things. Personally from there I installed the latest redistribute 9.0c(April 2009)
Another alternative would be using something like 3D Analyze to emulate direct x 8.1 and other graphical or sound settings. That program is great for getting games to run on systems they normally couldn't. You can even emulate pixel shades if you card doesn't normally support them.
D)I found the no-cd crack v4 of the complete game is more stable than running off the damn cd :/
E) even if the game seems great remember to save! crap in the background always can cause crashes. anti-virus updating, windows update or any other thing like an msn pop-up. Setting process affinity in task man might also effect the game stability. (warning you might also make your system unstable putting random stuff to "Realtime")
F) Have you checked your video drivers, sound drivers and direct X version? Downloaded the no-cd? Turned it to realtime? Turned off msn? Still crashing? Try disabling the sound in game? Still crashing too often? TRY SOMETHING NEW
In the end I am pretty happy, I can get all my heroes games to play on XP Pro SP3 without reinstalling. It's not flawless, but since when was windows flawless!?! Just make sure you have autosave working! Sometimes I get a crash after 1 hour, sometimes after 7 hours, but who else plays that long?

Where does it freeze?
Just before or at the intro movie with the chick?
-Install a codec pack from the internet!
Just when start a game or after your first turn?
-in: X:\Program Files\New World Computing\Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete
Create a folder called "games"
I the menu or in game randomly locks up with repeating sound?
-Check your sound and video drivers.
Those would be my instinctual guesses.

Have a new problem i haven't seen spoken of yet. Have HOMM3 complete and i have a problem with the game making me double click all the time. ie. i am in a town and trying to move my characters around but it acts like i am double clicking to view their information. I have to select it a dozen times before it will act normally and let me move people around.
And solutions, i haven't heard of any patches for complete.
