Realm of Chaos
This is a map that comes with Heroes III.
I've been revisiting some of the older maps to find a well-balanced scenario that has great replayability.
There are 8 factions, each with their own territory and single castle. A couple of creature generators, native to their terrain also exist.
Territories are divided by passes, usually guarded by packs of level 5 or 6 creatures at the beginning of the game. There are numerous places to visit to level up your heroes.
I was curious as to whether or not anyone else enjoys this map, and what your best time was.
Thanks.

I like this map because it lets you have 3 people on one team. As the Good guys, my brother, his friend and I won in about two months. I don't remember if I ever finished it alone.

well, it's one of my favorite maps, though i don't think it's well balanced as necropolis and tower towns are harder to reach than for example dungeon.
as for allies neutral towns have very little chance to win, while good towns have the biggest chance.

I've been playing this scenario as a single player versus seven CPU opponents. Necropolis starts off right next to Inferno, and the Tower has Castle to the west and Rampart to the south. Generlly, small passes separate the factions with mid-level stacks of monsters guarding them.
The strategy lies in how much do you send off to take another castle, and what do you defend with . . the CPU always seems to show up on my doorstep right after I've sent off my main army to claim a castle.
I've only had real success once I acquired town portal.
Any other thoughts?

IMO, this map not very balanced.
Tower will have a very easy start simply because there is a hillfort in every nation and hillfort is the most valuable for tower.
Stronghold and especially fortress will be quite difficult to play though still winnable. You just have to rush other nations in "right" time so that they will have built most things for you.

Once you get Expert Town Portal, that game is yours. You can't lose with Expert Town Portal.

thunderknight :
I agree. The key strategy seems to involve how to rush your opponent, while maintaining an effective defense. Too many times have I taken my second castle, only to see another hero jettison his way to my starting town.
Starting on impossible will slow you down for a little bit. You'll build up fairly quickly, but I find Dungeon, without a hillfort, mind you, has the best starting position on impossible. Going SW will get you to an area guarded by wraiths that is full of goodies. This allows you to build dragons week 1, else week 2 at the latest.
