b0rsuk, I read your reply and just laughed.

and they failed.
So what? Is Heroes 5 going multiplatform? Is it going to try to appeal to a different audience at the cost of the diehard fans? I sincerely doubt it.
And you make a lot of talk about the games that were made from Quake 2 engine versus Quake 3. Last I checked though, we were talking about GAMES not ENGINES. If you think Quake 2 holds a candle to Quake 3, I refer you here:
http://www.gamespyarcade.com/games/
On August 17, 2004 Quake 3 has 3089 players. Quake 2 has 549. For comparison sake, Doom 3 has 549 and UT2K4 has 4073 (demo not included). Sure Half-Life has more than all the other games combined but we're talking about games that have either improved or worsened franchises and Half-Life was the first in it's franchise so that topic is irrelevant (but note: Counterstrike improved on Half-Life's popularity, if you consider it a "sequel").
And putting Nox and Diablo 1 over Diablo 2? Seriously... Do I even need to comment on this one?
Personal preference aside, I think you have no argument that any of the franchises I mentioned have gotten worse with time.

Polaris:
You enjoy pulling my words out of their context.
The quake2/quake3 thing is to prove that technical superiority has little to do with gameplay, and game value in general.
Counterstrike visuals and map level of detail are crude at best by today's standard, and it doesn't seem to matter much. Hope you can understand that. Besides, if a game this old is still played regularly, it means something. The truth is that Quake2 had big impact on fpp gaming, and prepared the ground for quake3 (fanbase, game name). Remove Quake2 out of history and those years would be "empty". Try the same with Quake3 - no one would notice, because of UT. UT ultimately defeated Quake(3) franchise, like it or not. Meanwhile at the times of Quake2 Unreal and other games were alternative at best, not serious competition. Quake2 was the game, Quake3 is a game.
In general - arogance won't prove anything. If you refuse to give serious argumentation, I take it you have none.
About Diablo1 I admit it's a matter of personal preference. But seriously - compare the Steel Lord to Chaos Knight weaklings. Diablo1 was much more dark, and there was indoor scenery only - a bless and a curse at same time - but no doubt the athmosphere was much more tense because of these 2 points.
What's bad about Diablo2 ? It's BORING. Yes, it can be played for some time, but then you realise that you always use the same few skills, because of sole reason that you can only use 1 attack skill at a time (basically), and developing others costs very valuable skill points.
The PvP doesn't really exist - because it's very, very predictable. Equipment and level is what matters in duels, NOT skill. Your enemy won't suprise you, because he's spending all the points in same few skills.
If you enjoy doing Bhaal runs only and nothing else, then sure Diablo2 is a great game !
I have to agree with you - comparing Nox to Diablo2 is pointless, because the former if superior when it comes to multiplayer. Not only there is actually some action going on, and everyone has equal chances/level (so it's the skill that matters), but also there are much, much more viable choices when it comes to tactics. And by action I mean fighting fiendishly smart and sneaky players, not fiendishly looking pieces of code which differ mostly by hp and damage dealt. Diablo2 multiplayer is about doing same things over and over, collecting equipment, raising the numbers and bragging about them. There's no such things as stealth in Diablo, just as there are no line of sight limiters. Nox is about tactics, skill, and improvisation.

You can say Quake 2 is better than Quake 3 all you want but that doesn't make it true. As I showed in my previous post, players in general disagree with you 6:1. I will not discuss that topic anymore.
As far as CS, you are trying to change the topic now. I never said you needed to have the newest, greatest technology to make a great game, nor has that ever been the topic of discussion.
About Diablo 1, sure it's more atmospheric but it is a much worse game than Diablo 2. I tried playing it again after Diablo 2, and Diablo's gameplay is horrible in comparison- try for yourself. Diablo 2 removes the tedium from the game by automating things that should have been automated in the first place, and strengthening the things that Diablo 1 did well (except for atmosphere). And Diablo 2 is only boring to some people because SO MANY people have played it SO MUCH that all the best strategies/builds have already been discovered and are well known. Nox was never so successful so the best strategies never circulated into common knowledge. If it became equally popular, you would complain that it was boring because there are fewer possible builds, let alone successful builds. Guess what: equipment and skills are what matter in Nox, too!
And my main point: Heroes 5 shouldn't disappoint because many franchises DO get better with time, not worse (as you said in your original post).
