Average length of games?
I'm just wondering how long it takes most of you to complete an average game. From what I've read, it seems like most can do it rather quickly, but then again, it also seems like many of you play head to head. I just got the game this past week after not playing for a couple of years and it seems like my games are lasting forever (not that that's a bad thing. I kind of prefer longer games).

me too. soemtimes i play 5+ months on large maps(not XL) just for fun. most of the gamers prefer to play fast and win in a couple of weeks but i like to enjoy my triumph over my enemy for long time

Right now I'm in the middle of one of the single player scenarios. The map is either L or XL and I started out with seven opponents (free for all, I think it was). I'm at least four months into the game, if not more, and I can imagine winning in just a few weeks.

The way I play, I build an unstoppable army, which takes about 2 months, and then go around killing my enemies. This usually takes one extra month per map size, i.e. a small map takes me 3 months, a medium 4 and so on.

But what do you do if someone comes into your area on a small map......latest on day 2 week 2???..

I prefer long maps myself, except the really long maps, except once your hero is strong enough to wipe anything out immediatly with magic or something, it gets tedious.
maybe like 3-4 months is my preference i guess.

A game of HoMM must end before I lose interest. In HoMM2 on a medium map I wipe out my cousin in week 2.

But what do you do if someone comes into your area on a small map......latest on day 2 week 2???..
Then a) they attack my castle and fail because I have my levels over half done by then, or b) I lose.

@Ste - last time we played Beltway. Me Necro, him barbarian. He wouldn't play nothing but easy, so be it. A few handy piles of sulfur and I've built Laboratory in week one and still have time to build statue and well in the same week. On day one I rush him with nothing but 4 bone dragons and some 70 skeletons (didn't take experience from chests and battles didn't give much experience either so I had to make do with basic necromancy). He needed a lot more crystal for his cyclopses than I needed sulfur, and it turned out that he didn't get them yet. The rest was easy.

i hope that by month you mean GAME months??!!
i usually crank the game up pretty hard and you have to beat it fast before youre overrun, and i almost always try and find the grail.
i like to make custom maps riddled with resources all over the map so everyone can build a kickass army... changes the game to LARGE scale 
dont know about u but i like fights with hundreds of 7th levels clashing...

Download some TOH maps then. A good deal of them is basically knee deep in resources.
