How to stop smoking
Yeah, I know I was stupid when I even started smoking, but now I´d like to hear your suggestions on how to stop smoking. And please, not those "Just do it"-tips, it just doesn´t work.. I have been many times many days without smoking, but then it just starts again. Is there any really working way of getting rid of the addiction for cigarettes?
Are there any people out there who have managed to do it or anyone who is still trying? Care to share your own experiences?

Well there's always dying.... bit final though
Best way I ever heard of was someone who knew that it was hurting his wife's chest badly to smoke near her. He couldn't stand the thought of it after that...

Is trying to quit smoking like trying not to swallow? I want some insight into being an addict so I can understand why it's so hard to quit.

greek_god_superman,
Hi I miss your old troglodyte avatar. Anyway my suggestion is what my mother, father, two brothers, and grandfather successfully used to stop smoking.
It's really much more complicated than people understand. The habit of smoking is more than the complex physical addiction. It carries with it a social and mental addiction as well.
1. The best and easiest way to defeat the physical addiction of smoking is to use what people call "the patch". "The patch" is a very small and concealable piece of adhesive that looks like a small circular band-aid. On the underside of this is a small amount of a mixture of chemicals that are absorbed slowly through the skin giving the person a necessary chemical defense against the very real symptoms of a drug addiction withdrawal. I have never heard of the fake cigarettes, stopping stone cold, or any other method available that is as effective against the natural addiction your body develops from smoking a cigarette. And believe me my family has tried them all.
2. The social addiction is what your group of friends associate you with. This can be any object of memorable mention. Some people are associated with a particular baseball cap, pair of sunglasses, necklace, etc. With the object of social addiction, the person garners attention on the socially acceptable scale from pier to apprentice. This side of the smoking addiction is the easiest to combat because one can always find at least one or more persons within their circle of friends who has respectfully restrained from publicly disagreeing with the act of smoking. Once you start on the path of fighting the addiction you may find some of your friends may have wanted you to for a very long time before but didn't say anything to you because they were such good friends with you.
3. The last and most apparent reason most people have such a difficult time stopping smoking is the mental addiction. A mental addiction of this nature(smoking) is not caused by friends, the cigarette, or anything else. As a person we sometimes want to be perceived a certain way by the people we look up to and consider to be piers. If you want to look cool, calm, and collective during the most stressful situations(i.e. bringing apollo 13 back to earth safely) then the cigarette is generally looked upon, in social standards, as a trademark of such characteristics. Whether this is true will forever remain unproven and subjective to the mind/minds of the environment in which one is seeking the traits mentioned above. The greatest problem with trying to quit this side of the addiction is that the smoker is largely afraid of losing his/her identity if they quit smoking.
To this I say that you will always be you in your heart. Smoking may have brought out the best characteristics within you but you must remind yourself that those great things that people looked to you for were already there. They simply needed a kick to come out for everyone to see. Now that you know you can be cool, calm, collective, etc. in stressful situations you don't need the kicker any longer. Simply try and think of it as a learning experience. You learned something about yourself and now you know how strong you are. You now know that you were you all along. You don't need the cigarette anymore. You can be you without some drug controlling life. Ultimately, it is your choice and ultimately the drug will kill you much sooner than you think. The average age for a regular smoker is about late 50's early 60's. I know this from experience. My friend's grandmother is 75 and still plays in the brass instrument section at her church on sundays. But back in my time working at the hospitals, I would constantly be reaching for the wall oxygen units and giving it to a hunched over 50 year old man who was very close to dying from pulmonary emphysema.

I kinda know many persons who stopped somking... It depend on your needs and when you smoke.. If you in smoke in bars, and your freinds smoke... GET A LOL_POP candie.. I'SERIOUS.. This way you'll stop the need of doing something all the time, and also having your mouth full with something sweet...
I also quit smoking, but it was something VERY stupid, that I'm sure won't work on you.. Cause I stopped smoking, after I've heard you could get throat cancer( I was only 11).. That weekend I went to a mountain river, so got al ittle cold there, my throat hurting.. I was sp scared, I tought I had throat cancer... That was funny.. After that... 2 years or more I didn't smoke at all, but after that I had a ciggarete a year with my friends.. My last one? In july, shared a ciggarete with a girl at the rock festival from Sighisoara, but I said before that I won't smoke more, and I haven't..

I started smoking when i was 12, I smoked a pack of cigarretes a day from age 16 on. At age 30 I decided that it was too expensive and unhealthy not only for me but for my family. My husband (another smoker for as long or longer) was in full agreement. Basically after ignoring all the facts for too long we decided that it was just stupid to smoke. All the reasons are out there, there's no point in telling you.
The key word there is that I decided. You cannot quit smoking unless you make that decision and you are ready to do it.
If you have made that decision- then just do it.
I started using the patch, only wore it three days. I decided that it wasn't necessary, but merely putting a bandage on a wound rather than outright healing it.
I won't lie, the first week sux, the second is even worse but by the third it's easier, and easier still every day after that!
I stopped smoking on October 13th of last year, and haven't touched one since. You can do it to, just make the decision and stick to it!
I wish you the best of luck - trust me it's best you do it now it's pretty hard after nearly 20 yrs

I started smoking about 2 years ago but i tried to cheat myself. the thing is i only smoke cigarettes that contain only 1 mg/0.1 mg tar/nicotine. Now i smoke no more than three cigarettes a day and sometimes i can go on months without smoking.
that is why i never think about cancer and stuff and currently i don't want to quit smoking. But if i really wanted to i could quit easily.
So my only advice to you is to smoke light cigarettes and try to limit yourself.

Thank you people (maybe excluding Woock with his idea.. ) for responses!
I haven´t stopped yet, and I´m going to continue it until I really decide to quit. My addiction is mostly mental, and I think I could be able to slowly lower the daily amount of cigarettes back to the zero when I´m ready.
Thanks!

have a smoke. now that you have had your fix, and dont really need another, ask someone to not allow you to have any at all, go cold turkey. get some nicorette patches and stuff, and drink coffee. the person must stop you from having cigarrettes, and the patches and the nicorette chewing gum and the coffee will help with the cravings. forumula for success!
or you could go back in time and not take it.
i smoke a pack a day. no not because im addicted. ive never even tried smoking. ive never smoked a single cigarrette, even though they are available to me. im not even at the legal age, but living in Tokyo, with all the cigarrette smoke, exhaust fumes and pollution and stuff adds up to one pack a day. sucks, eh. oh well, ill get over it. in case youre wondering, ill never try smoking, if i can help it

Best way to stop smoking is to keep talking to everyone about how you WILL stop smoking and discuss different strategies about how you SHOULD stop smoking.
PS: I am sorry for sounding a bit negative and sarcastic, but I haven't seen anyone doing the abovementioned things actually quit smoking or whatever else they wanted to quit or do. If you do want to quit smoking - make a decision and stop smoking. That's it. There's no other trick to it. You can either talk about doing something, or just do it.
