For me it all depends on which castle I pick. If the castle's starting resource is one of the rarer resources, (merc.,crys.,sulf.,gems) then I'll pick resource. If it starts out with the common ones (wood & ore) then I'll choose artifact.

Well if you're playing on the only difficulty I play on ( Impossible ) then you should always choose gold because most maps don't have gold in the first turn reach of the hero's movement. What good does choosing resources do anyway, wood and ore are easy to get because a wood mill and ore pit are like always right by your town, and if it's sulfer, gems, crystals, or mercury... they do you no good for awhile since the first buildings you will be buying are gold, ore, or wood based. Besides, you have to spend money to make money

If I play anything else than impossible, I take artifact. But on impossible, as is the games I've been playing nowadays, I take gold as it's a huge advantage if the map does not favor you.
But I am curious for the question that was not answered... on impossible, do you go for 2 heros, a creature building or town hall first?
I personnaly go for another Hero, but I could understand someone going for a creature building. I could not understand, though, someone going for town hall as soon as possible.

Most online games are played on 130%. In such games I normally pick art. You have the chance to get necless of swiftness, spirit of oppression, badge of courage, 2 dragon rings, health ring and about 10 more usefull arts. That chance is normally much better than picking gold or res.

If you play rampart or stronghold it makes sense to pick res on balance but I think art is as good a choice. Playing all other towns I think art is the best choice.

I prefer resources, Many maps or randoms I play, resources can be scarces & it sucks when you can build a lv 7 because you miss out by 1-2 resources you need.
Poor map gold could come in handy.
All else is covered then i would get an arty.

For this, i would have to assess the town i am in. If i were goin to use Castle, i would pick gold, simply because wood and ore can be found abundantly (dependent on which map you play, of course), but nonetheless unuseful, especially when you finally build the silo in week 2. The only way i would pick an artifact, however, would be a necropolis, because you have a good chance of getting an artifact that boosts necro skill. For any other town that requires anything but wood and ore, i would choose a resource as my bonus

Just look at the first page, there is a sticky thread called "Library - Table of Contents". Very good and very well sorted thread about nearly all things u can find here in the library. You will need months to read it all....but i bet, u will be enlightened afterwards..

Unless you are extremely lucky, taking anything but ressources seems pretty useless...
Well, maybe when playing town types with wood/ore at the ressource silo, you can find a little gold more usefull than a little wood/ore.
Playing the Dungeon almost always (and being extremely unlucky more often than not ) I always choose ressources !
I'm much better off with even 3 sulphur than either 500 gold or an Eagle Eye booster, am I not ?
(Remember : I did say I had no luck whatsoever ingame ! )

Obviously you aren't used to the richer templates, Legend.
On a template like jebus, where you would hire 7-8 heroes day 1 and send most of them to collect resources(will have about 30-40 of each and 100 or so wood and ore day 7) +3 sulphur wouldn't make much difference would it?
So it's better to take your chances at the spirit of opression or necklace or swiftness than to start with an extra pile of sulfur.
On poorer templates resuorces are a must i agree, but there are some where artifact is still the best choice

If i play average or poor templates (panic or extreme 2) and fortress for example, i chose wood/ore most of the time.....those wyverns cost 15 wood...and if u donīt find your woodmine soon, u get in trouble (happened to me sometimes..)

I don't think Stronghold and Rampart are the only towns where you need res on poor templates. You almost have to select res if you are playing Tower (unless you base your strategy on having a few easily accessible grass areas around you). Fortress (wood) and Inferno (mercury) are good choices as well.
If you want to build cavs on week 1, Castle should also consider picking a res. Res would also be nice for Necro (sometimes wood and ore mines come without any extra piles).
Dungeon is the only town where you should pick an art. You don't really need sulphur on week 1 and you must be really unlucky if you don't find any stores or banks by the end of week 2.
Oh, and on 200% it is always gold for me

I WOULD have to agree that the template used DOES make a difference, in contrast to what i had said earlier. The fact that you may need to get your lumber yard on the first day (which you almost always do, right?) plays an important role on the hiring of your heroes, terrain and map specs, etc.. Now i see that its not ONLY the type of town that matters, but a lot of other things will come into play as well. Thank you for that enlightenment

You people are right, here. Even more so than you might think ! Actually, this debate goes way beyond the rather simple (yet interesting) question that started this particular thread, IMHO.
I'm preparing a long post (even by my Legendary overtalkative standards ! Lol ), probably in a brand new thread, to treat this subject thoroughly. I'll add a direct link as soon as it's finished / posted !
(EDIT : Done at last ! Just in time to meet the deadline I'd gave myself (I'm a self-tyrant, remember ) which was the last day of Homm3 at the Zone. Check it out there ! And feel free to add valuable info to help me making it as accurate as possible.)
Thx. Legend.
