How can this be a question? Expert Slow has got to be the best spell in the game. Not to mention True Resurrection.
You have to think of it like this. You are adding approxomately 6 attack to all of your creatures by getting expert offense. Or you can cut the speed of your opponents creatures in half and be able to permanently revive dead creatures rather than temporarily. I say cutting the speed of your opponents creatures in half and being able to revive fodder units is better than 6 attack.

Though offense is about the best thing that a high defense hero can get, I believe that we should not miss earth magic here. I am not completely sure though, cause we must have already cleared a lot of map and we should have a way to do it by now even without it. We won't see high level earth spells (lack of wisdom) and only for mass slow - I believe it is not worth it.
Well - I vote for offense now, but it really depends on the current game situation. Expert offense will give you 30% more damage (since you do not have a high attack skill).
Note that in a real game situation we would not get wisdom offered again. Since it is NOT based on real game - the thread owner chooses the skills, no luck included - we might be seeing it again though. In that case earth is better.

Mass Shield and Mass Stoneskin are good too, you are right. I don't think that earth tome lets you cast spells you do not have the wisdom to. I might be mistaken here though, I can count on one hand how many times I got access to any tome.
I mentioned that wisdom would not get offered again and I am right. Might heroes have a very low chance to get wisdom offered naturally (I think it should be 3-4% for this hero, I don't have the table before me). They get a sure shot on it at last at their 7th skill slot, but since this particular hero has already had it offered, that no longer applies.
Seems it's not my game though. People talk about so insanely powerful artifacts as to be found (recanters, red and black orb, tomes) that I must leave in another universe. For me getting ANY of it looks impossible and insane, I would normally ban all of these from a game and would only place them for good reason AND as a quest reward for something very nasty. If XL randoms are like that, I don't ever wanna play them.

Your hero needs wisdom to LEARN spells of level 3 and higher.
If he has a tome or spellscrolls, he doesnīt LEARN them (give the tome to a scholar, he wonīt TEACH the spells to another hero..)
With a tome or a scroll, the hero is only ABLE to cast these spells, so wisdom is NOT necessary.
BUT!
If a hero carries a spellscroll (letīs say haste), and has NOT learned it yet, and a scholar who HAS learned the spell, meets him on the adventure map, will NOT teach him this spell, coz it appears in his spellbook already. So when the (non-scholar)-hero puts away the scroll (haste) after the meeting with the scholar, he is NOT able to cast this spell anymore.. (could be one of those unrepaired bugs..)

angelito,
You are absolutly right about the scrolls and the tomes. But I didn't know about the scholar one.
I had a question. Why is it better to use might skills (offence, defence, tactics, etc) with a might hero and not use magic skills to balance out the hero himself? what I mean is if you have Taz, why not focus on magic skills for a more rounded hero? And if you get a Wizard and not an alchemist, should we also go for intelligence, wisdom, Basic air/earth/water, etc?
I've always played this way and was wondering what the oppinions where out there.

Dear Conan,
when u look through the library here, u will find MANY threads about "Might or Magic".
Before i started to play online, my usual hero had the following skills: wisdom, earth, air, water, fire, intelligence, diplomacy and logistics.
Wow....and i won against the comp very often...
I couldnīt think about the advantages of skills like "offense, armorer, tactics, artillery a.s.o."
But i also thought the comp plays very good on 200%...
After my second online game, i realized VERY fast, what hugh difference exists between might and magic.
Since that time, my gameplay changed completely. Iīm still a poor online-noob, and there are MANY other players who know MUCH more about playing that game, but i can tell you at least ONE reason, why might is better than magic.
If there is an endfight between a might and a magic hero, both can use their "advantage" in every round.
But the magic hero can use it only ONE time per round (u can only cast ONE spell per round), the might hero (if he has 7 stacks of units) can use his advantages at least SEVEN times (when he gets moral, more times are possible) per round, coz his tactic counts for ALL seven units, same goes for armorer and offense. Only these 3 skills are that powerfull, that u r NOT able to stand against them even with chainlightning or meteorshower.
And btw...the whole power of a magic hero can be leveled down to zero with only ONE single artie (red orb....or at least recanters cloak)....but what can u do against PURE might power?
Think of it, try it.....and learn to change your gameplay...like i did..

True.. but also there are those cases when you just get imploded into pieces with all the proud of your might hero. End of story.
I choose earth. With dd/fly banned it is the most necessary magic to have.

angelito,
I actually tried what you said with AI. I took a barbarian town. But it's weird to play a game you are not used to. When reading the Tazar threads, I realized that I always voted the contrary of everyone else!!!
well in any case, thanks Maximus!

back to taz wont get wisdom again.
i was pretty sure u could, as i was sure in my games i see it more then once on a beastmaster. its not just might ot magic in 2 classes that decides what a hero gets offered. a knight for eg would get diff skill set slighty to beatmaster, but both r might.
anyways i did experiment. i gav taz a pan box with 1 million exp point in lol. leveled up and noted when wisdom was offered. now i advise every1 to try it if they dont belive me. but simply put, taz ALWAYS got offered wisdom 3 TIMES and always at levels 6,12, and 18.
test was ran 10 times with identical results. i leveled 1 skill to max at a time soas to keep as many open skill slots as posible.

I mean, what method did you use? Did you restart after each test? Did you reload maybe?
What is that you do not understand in "independent"?
The game's random number generator is bad and by no means real random. Hard to make statistical tests if you do not know what you're doing.

yes i did not understand how u use the wording there
but i ran the map from main menu each time, not by restarting scenerio, so will b different values. also did not do all 10 in a row, i did 4 then was away alittle while, came back did 6, and also since then i dun 2 more so now 12 in total and results r identical.
i also just ran Orrin 6 times, he gets wisdom at 6, 12, 18 everytime, and almsot everytime at level 21 also.
