Well Howard and his Government have a war on culturalism in full swing. They are so crazy on multiculturalism at the moment, features of our culture are in danger of going the way of the Dodo, immigration is up 50% etc...the only thing he has taken a stand on is the influx of boat people. At least he has stopped those incursions. But did you know that 40% of immigrants now cannot speak a word of english? And 80% of non english speaking country immigrants as well. So they create their own little communities and breed hatred, stage protest rallies when their home country is in strife and plead to the government to intervene on their behalf. When Australian people say that the government shouldnt intervene, they call the Australian people racist and spread more hostility.
Sadly, most of these people dont come to be Australian, but to bring their own country with them, religious and community prejudices intact. That is a scary thing to me.

What is actually Australia if not a multicultural country? If anyone has right of their own constitutive culture there, it's the Aborigines. English-speaking white people ("Autralians") are just as immigrant as any other. Consequently there cant be Australian culture endangered from imported culture. It's all one big melting pot.
By the way, Australia is the least populated continent, and there should actually be more immigration, as was suggested by the UN recently, because the government tried to restrain the immigration to qualified workforce only.
