Pimpin your Heroes
Since I didn't see any thread related to resource and gold spec heroes, I decided to make one .
I am mainly interested in opinions and comments related to the questions below:
How useful do you find heroes that have resource or gold as their special ability?
Which ones would you consider for main heroes (consider starting heroes random), and which ones would you think make nice/good/awesome secondary heroes?
If you're low on gold would you still hire a hero with gold specialty: when and when not?
What is the most useful resource producing hero for their native town (Calth, Sarug etc)?
This discussion is mainly related to multiplayer, starting difficulty hard, average resource random maps.

When I'm Tower, I always hope to get Sarug.
I usually always get some Gold heroes. They usually sit inside the castle, and just earn me money.

On $-bonus heroes
I find the gold bonus heroes (+350, is it?) not to be as helpful as they could be. At times, it's nice to see the extra revenue coming in. Unfortunately, it often proves not to be enough on really hard maps with very few resources and lots of tough creatures. You can't reach the City Hall sometimes, since even the gold bonus fails to provide the needed funds. That is when you're on Expert or Impossible; you're laying low a few turns to accumilate 5000 gold and suddenly your opponent breaks into your base with a superior army. I tend not to like that play style.
I think more good comes from hiring heroes with rare resource bonuses. In my opinion, one rare resource per turn is worth more than 350 gold per turn. Gold is most useful at 1000 pieces and higher at any given time. I've hired Sephinroth on day 1 week 1 one time I played as Rampart. Her ability goes far to cure a possible lack of crystal/mine coverage. Same with the other bonus heroes of that sort. Additional gold would've been nice as well, but we can't always have everything.
That doesn't mean I won't use the gold-heroes anymore; it's just that I will not rely heavily on their ability or get my hopes up on getting rich quick.

It really depends on what the specialty is. The ones that give specifically 350 gold a turn. No way. Secondary Hero. Same with the resource ones too.
My main hero has to have a specialty that is cumulative. If it was an estates hero, then most definitely. I'd even take experience from the first chest, so I can get to expert estates as fast as I can. so I'd be level 3. That's 500 * 0.15 = 625 gold from that hero each turn already. And it's not even the end of week one. Let's say by week 3 he's level 10. That's 750 gold a turn. So how much extra gold will you get a turn? Okay 19 days * 675 gold/day = 12825.
Now why don't we see what it would be had you not made the gold specialist your hero.
132 * 10 + 275 * 10 + 625 * 1. That's a third of the amount of gold and it's only week 3. That 12000 extra gold will let you buy creatures which will let you level up and get arties that much faster. This game is all about taking advantage of the cumulative skills.
Let's look at the next 3 weeks.

Good point about Estates. It is also nice to find a witch hut that teaches Estates; you can send all of your scout heroes there and try to level them up to Expert over time. That could mean a lot of free gold right there, well, at the cost of a sec-skill slot. But personally, I'd rather hunt for gold mines.

I hope you were joking redsox .
Now I usually try to get the gold heroes almost always because it gives me an extra hero (chaining scouting and other stuff) plus the hero will generate you income and in a week it will pay for itself basically.
Same with the resource heroes, you basically obtain a mobile mine.
The best secondary gold hero I can think of is Aine because she starts with a spellbook wisdom and scholar. She can be very handy in gathering spells from the map/different towns and then teaching your other heroes.
The best main hero you can get from the resource lot is damacon. That advanced offense he gets is just sweet. Also, in terms of magic heroes I find grindan the best choice.

+350gp hero at the tavern, day 1 is a BUY! BUY! and last but not least BUY! situation, even if I would have absolutely no use for him on the adventure map. On day 7 he will have already provided 350 x 6 = 2100 gold so chances are he's not going to affect your week 1 economy at all. (unless you're 400 GP short of buying that Portal of Glory on day 7 and you've already traded all your spare resources, that would be a bummer. )
About the resource heroes, it depends. -2500gp could be pretty damaging on a really poor map. Otherwise, like the fellow said, it's always nice to have your very own mobile mine.

You bet. Specialty of Estates. No one else has that. Unfortunately, in the expansions, you no longer have access to that specialty! And AA's cost 3 gems? What the heck?
