Game idea: HOMMMMOS
That is, Heroes of Might and Magic Mass Multiplayer Strategy. Of course, that's not what I want to call it, but this explains what it is (sort of). The actual name would be something like Grid Realms.
Here's what I'm thinking of (and I'm sorry if it seems a bit too rough and hard to understand, it's not a full outline, just ideas in my head and a "sketch" of the game).
Lately, text-based online "strategy" games have been emmerging and experiencing mild popularity. Games in which you are given a kingdom and get to develop it, build units, attack other kingdoms, all without ever seeing any graphics. The idea is good, but I think that with actual graphics, it'd be even better.
I also think that I know exactly what kind of graphics are needed.
The game world, one shared by all players, would be a grid of cells (see attached image). Each player would own a kingdom - that is, a certain number of cells, coloured according to each player's unique colour. If there is a city built on the cell, it will be seen there. From the grid map you can highlight various nations and see what you know about them.
When looking at your own cells, you see a grid of squares (or maybe an isometric grid) on which you have a limited amount of space to build farms, towers, training grounds, storage, etc.
When zooming into your towns, you'll see a town screen of the sort you get in HOMM, where you can build all sorts of buildings and units.
When a battle between two nations occurs, it is done in the HOMM2-3 style.

So anyway, I for one think that such a game would be fun. I know I'd play it (so long as it's free).

Actually, such a game would not be hard to create. From a programming point of view, I've made more complicated projects. The challenge would be in making graphics for cities and combats, as well as making a balanced gameplay system that's hard to cheat in.
EDIT:
Hm. I've been thinking - is it possible for us to make graphics of the HOMM2 style without modifying old sprites? Here's my first attempt at making my own HOMM2ish units from scratch:

It sounds pretty cool, id definitely give it a go!
Are you going to attempt to make this game, or is this more of an idea, not really something that will happen?

The units you posted are great. I'd better see this idea put into practice, because you got my hopes up. Meanie.

I'm not sure if I wanna make it yet, but I could if I wanted to and if there was enough interest. Also, I'd have to first carefully plan the gameplay system so that there are no loopholes, and so that it'll be playable and fun.
Oh yeah, and if I was to do this, I'd also need the help of people who are really good at HOMM to help me design a balanced system for battles and kingdom management.

Update
My friend and I are seriously working on this game now, and it's possible to have an alpha/beta in a year or two. It will not be a HOMM game, nor will it be fantasy, but the idea is the same. Better, actually. Name of the game is Brave New World:
