What you think of Harry Potter ?

Perhaps I should have asked whether have you read the books, or just seen the movies?

A recently developed saying says: There are two types of people nowadays;

a) Those that have read the books for Harry Potter, and

b) Those that will read it!!!

So, for those that have read the books or seen the movies, what do you think?

And for those that have not done it (Wht the ... are you waiting for?), why?

Looking forward for your comments...

I love HP. It's one of the best fantasy novels I've read in the "not too adult" genre (which I just invented, btw ).
The books have an atmosphere to them that I rarely see the like of in any other books I read, and the magic world of JKR displays an imagineation beyond comprehension, imo. The way she borrows stuff from myths and stuff, adding and removing the things she thinks to be required is very admireable.

As for the film, I'm no great fan of the first two, but the third one is currently in my top five list of best fantsy films I've seen. Let me see if I can find my explaination for this in GG...

Ok, here it is:
Quote:
Quote:
Wang said, "see they're better as books" or something..

Quote:
Of course they are!
In a book, the author has more time to introduce and build the plot, and a good, exciting plot is 4/5 of the movie! the rest is just painting and wax.

As an example, you could compare the two first Harry Potter films with the newest (3rd).
The two first are silly, boring children's films, where the director has all his concentration on the action scenes. It seems as if he thinks that if it's not non-stop action, the kids will fall asleep or something. You can see this in the fact that in both of the 2 first films, they've included two almost complete games of quidditch, while in the 3rd film, they've included the plot-carrying part of one single game, a scene no longer than 5-7 minutes.
The lack of focus on action in this film gives the director much more time to character building, the creation of that special magical Harry Potter feeling, which until now could only be found in the books, and of course plot development.
Of course, the director didn't make the last one perfect, he left out a few important details that'd made the film make more sense to those (infidels ) who haven't read the books, but at least he tried to make a film that was something more than just a 2 hour long action scene, by letting it stay closer to the books.

Ehem, from this long monologue, we can conclude that books are, obviously far better than films, and that films based on books are better the closer to the book they are.
The same conclusion could be reached through comparing LotR: FotR, with LotR: TT. The first one, which is closest to the book, is by far the best one.
Any more that that I shall refrain from writing, since I guess you are all (those of you who bothered to read my post, at least) sick of my ramblings. Thank you for your time.

I'm not sure how much sense this makes, since it's been copied, pasetd, recopied, and repasted quite some times, but I hope you get the general idea...

I've read the books right when they were released (and when I was of the age they are targeted at) and - this is my honest opinion and nothing more - I didn't find them to be anything special.

I mean, yeah, I read the series and it was a fun thing to read. But just because something is "fun" to read, doesn't make it a "good" book. On my list, it would be placed right under the Dragonlance series and only slightly above sci-fi series spin-off books.

If you want fantasy, read Tolkien, Robin Hobb, Terry Prachett or Ursula LeGuin. If you want the more childish, fairy tale kind of fantasy (which there is nothing wrong with, don't get me wrong) try C.S Lewis, Tolkien's earlier books, Pratchett's children's books, and countless others. If you haven't read the Little Prince you are missing out.

After reading these books, you may change your views on HP.

What's he doing in fantasy art?

About harry poter; After seeing the movies, the aversion was a priori transfered to the books without reading them. I could have liked them when I was 13, now I find all that boring and infantile. Its like a Hollywood version of those sleazy highschool movies, and if there were books of that sort (that is, if most american kids read books), i'm sure they would be the same, only with wizards instead of teachers, and cheap magic as visual effect.

Why not? It's not exactly like most fantasy, but that doesn't make it any less fantasy. Fantasy, in its ideal form, should work in the same way as this novel.

I didn't read harry pothead and I never will. so there goes your theory

Movies were definetly too childish for me (maybe that's cause i'm NOT A KID ), but i couldn't say anything about the books.

Yeah, Pullamn is great. I heard they're making a film (or Three ) of "His Dark Materials", but that they're leaving the religion out of it. And it was the religion that made the books more than just 'good' to begin with!

Well my theory still holds for most of the ppl. But for those sceptics like Svarog and the others, I was th same until two years ago, when I started reading the books, the first two are not so captive, but as of the third one the fun starts and the books are becoming darker.

I understand that watching the movies can create aversion if you haven't read the books. And the last tip would be try to read them on english (if you are not eng native speakers), cause in some languages the translations are very bad. Like in mine, Macedonian

i find the idea of using wands, incantations and such all a bit. . .lets say uncreative, jk rolling has to take the blame for that one. its all just a little basic. i mean u tell 8 years old to write a story about a witch and wizard and they will have these wands in there

I nominate Quidditch as the stupidest sport ever invented by a fiction writer or otherwise.

I mean you have these 5 guys spinning around on brooms right, chasing this whosits. I mean there out there the entire game using their hard earned skills, competing against each other in a fierce, exhausting contest.  Then all of sudden one guy just comes along and catches the other whosits and completely undermines what the other 5 guys were doing the entire time. It's daft.
For creating the most retarded sport ever I'm giving J.K.Rowlings...

I must disagree, the moment the snitch is caught the game is finished and the team whose seeker caught it scores 150 points. But it doesnt mean that this team will win for sure.
In chapter 4, there was a match Ireland vs. Bulgaria. Ireland scored 170 points (If my memory is correct), Bulgaria scored 10, but they caught a snitch. That's 160 points for Bulgaria and 170 for Ireland. Victory for the team that DIDN'T catch the snitch.

Supersonic, I'd like you to try and imagine this scenario:

You're a member of your school's Quidditch team and you've traveled for an away game to Elbonia.  You're happy to be back in the game because about a month ago you fractured your collarbone after a nasty fall.  You've made practice though for the past 2 weeks and this is your first game back.

The timer begins and you discover the Elbonians are not up to the game.  TNT scores any easy goal off of them in about 2 minutes.  These guys aren't even in the same league as you really.  Play continues…

You're murdering these guys! Do they even practice?  They don't even seem to have gone beyond the basic formations.  One of the guys looks like a total bunjhead.  You're up by 60 points.  The special formations that you've been working on with the coach's help are actually starting to work.
Score again! You're up by 110 points.  There's going to be a big banner waiting for you when you get back to Elbonia prep. Score again!  The game's almost over.

What?! That ******* seeker dufus caught the snitch!!
and the timer just ran out!
YOU LOSE!!
The crowd is going wild.
But the cheering's not for you
It's for the team with the snitch catcher.
You can't believe your eyes.  This is the 4th time it's happened this season.  All you can do is sit there on your Raytheon 6000 broomstick and hope that nobody sees you cry.  Tears are streaming down your face and you decide it's pointless to try and hide it now.

It's going to be a long magic bus ride home.  Fogminster is in back cracking jokes like usual with his loser buddies but other than that the bus is totally quiet.  All you can do is look out the window and stare at the gigantic wings.  Flap….Flap….

It's monday again.  The entire day while you're sitting in class you replay the last few moments of the game over and over again in your mind.  You're wondering if you're even going to be able to make the playoffs now.  Elbonia is going to the playoffs.  They've won the last 7 games with scores like 170-160. Finally your classes are over and it's time to go to the grid.

Now I just have one question for you Supersonic:  Would you rather:

A. Spend another 2 hours in grueling training and memorizing formations and practicing your banking skills and risking refracturing your collarbone so that the next time you play hopefully the other team's seeker won't catch the snitch.

or

B.  Go bowling.
