How to get HOMM2 work on XP?

I have a problem with HOMM2 on windows XP. It doesn't work properly, i can't hear any music, and the game and sound are lagging. I've tried VDMS-sound, compatibility modes, and DOS-box, but nothing seems to work. DOS-box says this program cannot be run in DOS mode. Anyone else got this kind of problems or has some ideas what to do? Thanks...

Aaahhh, I got it to work, just by changing music to midi. I tried that before but there is a few second delay in changing it, so I didn't notice it...(dumbass me)

It really doesn't matter a lot, but if someone knows how to get the "opera" sound option to work, I'd be glad hearing it.
