A Link Between Church & State?

At some point in this society education and religion might actually cross over. The white and black dull to grey. In this grey area:

Why aren't colleges considered public schools? Public schools are ran by the state and respective communities are they not? I just don't understand why going to college is considered a "higher" education. I wish we could describe it in terms of length rather than hiegth. It seems to me that a 'higher' education sounds too much like it's supposed to lift you up out of your current life and make you a better person. It almost reminds me of a religious connotation. A 'higher' set of beliefs--to go from atheist to believing in God. That doesn't sound right to me at all. I feel very strongly that the term 'higher' when applied to any thinking mindset is clearly meant to set you apart from other people in such a way that dictates what is or is not preferable; the average and better; the unworthy and the worthy; the bad and the good.

I don't think getting a more extensive education in your chosen field of study will make you a better person, or get you closer to God, or somehow help you to rise above other people. I think getting a more extensive education will give you yet another set of choices and circumstances. And even then...still people have the choice to become more greedy or more giving, more selfish or more selfless.

consis...

I think you are trying to procreate with earthbound evolved wasps right now...

the term "higher" when it comes to education, stands for "advanced" and to the best of my knowledge, the stuff taught in any "higher education" institution is quite advanced compared to what is taught before it

Huh?

What is an earthbound evolved wasp? An insect that is crashing to the ground? Okaaaay....

Lith-Maethor,

If it is an advanced education then why don't some people call it such? I have spoken with people whom say things like this: "Get yourself a higher education so you can get out of this rathole neighborhood and live somewhere better." It seems to me that there are many people who do in fact get a more advanced education, move to a more pricey neighborhood and look back at the city that raised them with unyielding judgmental attitudes; looking down on their old neighbors because they 'made it out'. They are better people now that they make more money and live in a more expensive home? It all seems like some people do not accept their origins. It seems like these people believe in greener pastures. It seems like many people are quick to judge.

The same can be said of many religious people yes? ~ Rise above your ignorant lowly beliefs and become almost ascended ~ Seperate yourself and be above the others ~ They will laugh at you because they do not understand that you are better than they are ~

I do not accept either the religious, scientific, or governmental axioms of seperating one's self from other people to be better than they are. I wonder if the real reason why the founding fathers of the United States seperated church and state in an effort so as to keep two highly judgmental societal powers from merging. What if they knew and believed that when church and state combined they became an unstoppable mass wave of unyielding judgmental people ready to make sweeping statements, pass their judgment, and then execute sentencing on a philosphical basis. Quite literally 'executing'. Those men must have been seriously wondering and seeking to prevent future crusades or inquisitions or behavior like that of Longshanks and the very first so called "Lord Protector" (Cromwell). Isn't it true that almost any group, organization, or single individual can become tyrannical? If so then they must not be given the power to act on their obvious indescretions. Checks & Balances--the greatest wisdom of any founding principle. Those rules and principles that specifically seek to keep one societal power base from gaining too much power and thus having the impunity to kill other human beings based purely on principles at the will and whim of its body of members.

an earthbound evolved wasp is an ant

and yes, "higher" education is quite often a ticket out of a "rathole" and to a better place ...that however doesn't mean that everyone who makes it looks down at his old neighbourhood and neighbours ...such people don't need higher education for that, any other excuse will do, what they do need is someone to ply the stick out of their rear ends

higher education was once the priviledge of those that could afford it.. and they were in the higher classes of society (if not socially, then at least financially) ...and you know what? most of the time higher education does make someone a better person, they get a chance to see more of the world and about it ...if more people had higher education, i am pretty confident the world would be a better place

Yay for Consis! He's absolutely right!

Although it may not be meant that way by the state, a lot of people still think that way. Last thursday, someone asked me if he could get more paid, because he had gone longer to college!
Now, that would've been alright, if these extra studies were actually relevant in his job! Honestly, what can you do more with an engineer diploma (not sure if that's translated right) in a hospital?! And that person even thought this was something obvious! I'm not going to tell about the rest of the conversation, but I think my point has been made.

Actually, I'm starting to feel more and more for communism every day...

Distance

I had the priviledge of watching a good CSPAN piece with Senator Ted Kennedy giving one of his usual finely crafted speeches. Here are some of the kinds of terminology he used:

~ Move ahead/Left Behind
~ Forward into the future/Behind in the past
~ Rise & Fall on an economic growth chart or on a large scale
~ Climbing/Falling wages
~ Peak/Dip in productivity
~ Here we are/There we were
~ Roadblocks/Downhill/Uphill
~ Surplus/Undermine
~ Compromised (good & bad)

I think most of his addresses do not seek to seperate one human being from another but rather instead seek to give us pause. I think his talent with diction helps us stop and think of the ties that bind rather than the differences in elevation. He's a fine U.S. Senator. I enjoy how he is able to help characterize many points in our history and give them relevance for today. I enjoy how he is able to describe the need for measuring without segregating persons into the worthy and unworthy. I think he truly believes that we can all make a difference if we get the facts and take them into careful consideration. As he was saying today, workers unions are legal and justified but are no more exempt than any other organization. In many cases these unions were found firing members that didn't vote or protest along with the group. Most of his speech today was on behalf of companies that took an active interest in NOT exploiting their members' basic rights.
