Quote: You want a career in business, administration or what they call "IT" these days.
ehh, that was rather stupid to call that stupid.I mean, you can earn the most money by those subjects. And generally "stupid ppl" can not be programmers or being something in doplomacy.
But I may be sure, the "best in stupidity" are always ppl under 18 or child minded ppl, from 18 to the end of life.
Pso not misjudge ppl if they behave stupidly,it might come true they are pretty smart.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "traditional societies", but I think it's a check here.

Disagree. They are interesting subjects.
Quote: Men who enjoy musicals (and are older than 20)
Women who enjoy operas (and are younger than 55)
How about anybody who enjoys musicals and operas? I dislike them both.
Agree with all of the rest.
Quote: I'm not quite sure what you mean by "traditional societies"
Defenders of "traditional societies" is a very wide group. It includes everyone from primitivists to "ethnic" people to social conservatives.
Quote: Now you start to sound like Bush (albeit with different opinions)
Let me tell you that Bush would never have jingoists or social conservatives on his list.
Quote: And what does time period have to do with quality?
Because this time period doesn't have the great books that, say, the 40 years before that had.

Disagree. They are interesting subjects.
Well, I should have addded: "... the way I get them". The French/Spanish teacher is a foul, wicked, lying Gorgon, who obviously teaches only because of the wage, she gets as a senior teacher. She despises us. And physics is my worst science subject; because of it I don't study Sciences... Which is a pity, because Biology and Chemistry are two of my best subjects. Maths is also a problem, but at intervals, I'm very good at it, so I didn't list it here. It would probably be a disaster if I studied Sciences.

Operas can be nice, but most are way too booooooring. The best are Wagners Ring and Mozarts Zauberflöte... Almost all the others suck beyond belief... And I never met women younger than 55 who actually enjoyed them. The very vast majority of musicals suck; actually, they are suited to daft teenage women and children only.

Obviously, I was talking approximately. But I don't think that there's been any good books (besides the Dune series) that have come out after Catch-22.

Or perhaps you just weren't interested enough to search for any, or haven't heard of any, or can't remember any, or your taste is simply different.

You really ran out of things to say, didn't you?
How about Jostein Gaarder's books for instance? Please tell me they don't have any literary value either. Or, if you prefer lighter literature (you mentioned Catch 22), how about Terry Pratchett? Arthur Clarke wrote a great deal of books in the last 40 years too. Boris Akunin's books are great, just like Neil Gaiman's, and scores of others. All of them were quite active in the last 40 years

I haven't read anything by Joseph Gaarder. I might have to look into it. Catch-22 may be light, but it has much philosophical content, unlike Terry Pratchett's books. As for the others, no.

There are great thoughts there under the mask of parody, and my way of thinking has been influenced quite a lot by Terry Pratchett's books over the years. And I'm tired of people going "It has funny illustrations on the cover and it's a mixture of fantasy and parody, so it can't have any value at all". :\
