h3 critters simbolism
i found all this in a semiotics and simbolistics book last night and i thought it would be interesting to share it with you guys.
Here are common symbols of some of the h3 critters.
Dragon:there is a big difference between occidental and oriental belifs.
In the Orient,the dragon is the fifth sign of the chinese zodiac;it is a positive simbol and it represents joy, health and fertility, also it is said it protects one from the evil spirits.
In the Occindent the image of the dragon is aimilated with that of the snake.It has a distructive power, destroying innocence.It is said the dragon has the claws of a lion and the lungs made of fire.It is the keeper of a hidden treasure.
On a side note german scientist Carl Jung asociated the dragon with the mother figure.
Unicorn:Has the legs of an antilope,tail of a lion, head and body of a horse.Can be captured only by a virgin and simbolies the fermity, purity, chastity and the power of good.
In China it's called Ky-lin and represents the union between yin and yang, so fertility.
Legend has it that the unicorn can spot poison with his head spike and that it has healing powers.
Griffin:it simbolises the sun;it has the head, wings and feet of an eagle and the body of a lion.The ancients greeks thought it was holly for the sun god Apollo, wisdom goddess Athena and to the vengeance goddess, Nemesis.It represents the power of the lion,and the attention of the eagle.In the dark Ages it simbolised Christ, but it's duality was also associated with evil powers.
Cerberus:it guards the enterence it Hades;it is a dog with the tail af a snake and with 3 heads wich simbolise the infernal trinity.Though friendly with dead souls walking in, he forbids them to exit, nor allows the living in the Underworld.Only a handfull of heroes managed to trick this creature:Hercules,Orpheus and Sybil.The cerberus simbolises the fact that death is unstoppable and also the self defense instincts.
MinotaurIt's a monster: a man with the head of a bull;son of a white bull and queen Phosipae, was captured by king Minos of Crete in his underground labirinth.He fed with young boys and girls brought by atheneans as a tribute.Theseus killed him and only managed to get out of the labitrinth with a rope showing him the way.Nowdays it is the emblem of Crete.
Naga is a snake with human head.The naga female can get married with humans.The naga king it's called Ananta and has 1000 heads representing eternity.

here are some more:
HidraIn greek mythology it was called the lernean snake.It is said that when one head it's cut off of her, two appear instead.Hercules managed to defeat the beast by putting a flammin log on the neck so that the wound was cauterised{??mispelling maybe}
pegasusOriginally it was the horse with wings whom Bellephoron had ride when he killed the Chimaera.It was created from the blood of the Medusa.It is a symbol of poetical and intelectual inspiration.
PheonixUniversal symbol of ressurection and imortality.It's origins are from ancient Egipt where it was the sun bird:Bennu.It is said that the dying pheonix set himself on fire and then he rebirth from his ashes.
In China it is called Feng-huang and it is the king of all birds
Basilisk:This monster has the wings, claws and head of a bird and the body of a snake.In the Orient it was belived that his eyes could turn a man to stone and could only be killed when faced with his own face in the mirror.
Medusa:Was one of the gorgons sisters, though the only mortal one.She had snakes instead of haurs and a XVII century picture by Caravaggio captured the essence of this creature.Her eyes were told to kill people, but Perseus managed to kill her.
Harpies3 beautiful women, Aello(storm),Celaeno(obscurity) and Ocypete(tornado), were turned into monsters by the gods;half eagle half woman they prey on people.They are messangers of the underworld,They simbolise the distructive power of the woman
Dragon flySimbolises summer, instability and weakness.The dragon fly is the national sign of Japan.

But I think I can add some to the Vampire-stuff linked to above (at least from a historical point of view):
In Hungary (mainly), people usually nailed dead people to their coffins and had their heads cut off. Sometimes they even digged up the dead people after a few days just to make sure they were still dead. It's said that they sometimes buried "evil" people alive, and nailed them to the coffins while they still lived, so that they wouldn't go on a killing spree. And once a swarm of grasshoppers were banished from a town because the inhabitants thought the swarm was controlled by a vampire or evil spirit.
And here is some other stuff, related to vampires and demons. Maybe they don't have anything to do with Heroes, but still..
