This forum is strangely quiet now that there is so much information about the next sequel. Maybe overwhelming info?
Anyway, back in the days of H4 fever when I have joined this community there was pretty much more activity around.

You mean Ubisoft's forum? It's awful. Lots of people talking about the things we discussed ages ago. As for the latest news, one has to check Russian sites.

What's active time combat system? Doesn't sound good to me...

Nice to see that last video. Got to see how gameplay looks, plus transition from adventure to battle.

I did not like the pre-battle "cut-scene", where they zoom in on each creature in turn, and I sincerely hope that's skippable.

ALso renewed fear about size of battlefield. Seems like everyone can reach everyone within one round, and that's not good in my book.

Not entirely comfortable with animations/graphics either, that might change, though. For now, I find the animations too flashy and gaudy, for lack of better words. I'm primarily concerned about creature/hero graphics. They seem a bit impersonal and uninteresting to me. Again, this could change, given time.

I really hope we get a demo soon, that'll make everything so much clearer.

Active combat system will be optional... is something like final fantasy games... each unit have a time bar when the bar is total filled the unit can move... but if you don't move then the other can move his units if his time bars are filled... so this system will increase the speed of the game... time to think but no much time... if you don't like just put it off and all is ok

That sucks.

Use your time and efforts making the classic, turn-based gampeplay as good as possible. Don't fall between horses trying to please numbskulls.

There is a new clip, this time with little new content but with Fabrice's comments (and strong French accent ):

Quote:
Welcome to the E3 demo of Heroes of Might and Magic V .

This is where I will start to reveal what the game it will look like and how it will play.
As you start the demo in the human town you can see that it is now completely rendered in full 3D with glorious details and the depth of view.

You completely control the camera, you can turn around the city, close in to the small [???] or get a very large view of the whole town.

What you see here is a fully developed human town with all buildings completed and of [???]. When you start off you only have a small village that will grow in size and [???] up to this level.

At this stage we don’t want to show much of the interface, so of course we are missing some information here in this town’s screen.

You can see some icons in the bottom right part of the screen, summarizing the main actions of the player when he enters the town: recruit creatures, hire heroes, make a new building.

As in previous games the city is where everything starts. And when your hero is ready you have a complete army to fight with, you exit the screen and you enter the adventure map.

This is the second part of the game and we will see this in the next video.

Like I said, nothing new here.

A new movie will be available next week.

And there will be nothing new in the next one either. They're posting the same videos that we've already seen, this time with an unscrambled score. There was supposed to be a Q&A on the official forum after E3... When that will become reality, we'll probably be "surprised" to find out that we already know the answers.

havn't played the ff games, i think the active combat system doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. i think it's nice that they let us try out this option.

if time bar was used up less than to full extent if you didn't use your full attack power to kill the target stack, it might reduce the problem with many small stacks attacking a large stack (large stack could recover more quickly).

That would be a very good idea, since we've seen a lot of special abilities of creatures but none so far had the ability to have a double charge. And it only looks normal to me that a large stack of champions will thread on the first row of troglodytes and move on to attack the second row of whatever...

Fabrice says...

Quote:
We find the hero here waiting for orders in front of the town. As you can see, this is a detailed replica of the town, with the major elements shown here. The town replica on the adventure map will reflect the actual power of the town itself. The town is completely built up, and you compare it to this starting human town here.

You can see how the demon town looks like. The principle will be the same in all towns : a central column around which you will turn and zoom on, that will grow in power. But the style and gameplay will of course be very different. We will enter the demon town for a quick look.

Demons are a special race in Heroes 5, sort of invaders. They dont plant nice farmlands and pretty peasant huts. What demons do is basically carve a giant pillar thrown into the lava crust, adding the structures needed to summon more demons.

You`ll see more of this town later, that`s enough at this stage.

Lets have a quick look at the demon environment. Each race has its own environment. For demons as you can see, its all magma pits, lava lakes... very hot stuff, they like it !

As we take a look around, you can see that the move to 3D allows us to create a detailed and living world. You can zoom in to see the sunflowers, the pumpkins, scarecrows... You can stroll on the roads... If you choose to, you can keep the default view and not move the camera of course. This way you have a top-down view similar to previous gaes.

On this adventure map you will see other objectives that we have with Heroes 5. We want the game to be faster to play, and easier to access. For instance when you move up to this windmill here, you see that there is no window popping up with text to read : its just a bit faster.

Now we reach a very typical item, the treasure chest. Here the choice can be done a lot faster in the interface : just do one double-click, and you close the window.

Further along we can see a resource item here. It looks like a mercury flask, lets pick it up. You can see how much you gained, and keep moving.

In front of us you see a very derelict structure. You can compare that with this sawmill here, and there is an ore mine just a bit below. These are of course resource mines. We move the hero up to it, and its coming back to life, with colors and animation. And of course your symbol on top of it. The idea here is that we want the player to really feel like he`s conquering the territory, and changing the face of the landscape.

Now lets get some experience points here. Of course there`s still the rpg part of the game - its very critical to the gameplay. Heroes still level up, you can choose from skills and abilities, learn spells, acquire artifacts... There is one here, just down the road. You can get very close to it with the camera, and then pick it up.

I`ve been moving my hero for a long time here, but this is only for the demo. The game is still turn based, and at some point, you have to finish your turn. As I end my turn, its the enemy`s turn to move. We have a demon hero here, jumping out of the woods on top of me, and engaging the fight.

We`ll see the battle screen in the final video.

Just watched second video with fabrice comments and all I can say - its fantastic! Thats the graphics I wanted in heroes4
Now I can only hope that ubisoft(and nival) wont snowup with balance and will be able to add decent number of stuff(like monsters, objects, etc.). That really can be breaktrought in strategy games, since I really havent seen any really good strategy game in past 7(??) years.

Awwww, I saw the 3rd video too. The battlefield's so small. I guess they've made it Disciples (or Etherlords, if you like) style. And I saw the Devils ain't got the "no retalation" special. And they don't look as cool as in Heroes III. But the Archangels rocked! And the Bone Dragon (I guees that's what it is) was so badass!

It makes sense in those two games, but what about Heroes?

What about troops with ranged attack and melee penalty? What about a few archers engaging a few goblins in combat - will the battlefield be "re-sized to fit the size of the armies"?

It reminds me of another HoMM spin off ( Quest for the Dragonbone Staff ), but it was for PS2...

I saw the first seven minutes. The square grid looks nice and it's good they have blood back, but since when does skeletal corpses bleed? I don't really like the way the Lich pulls out hers staff out of the emptiness. And I don't like the way they don't show the Death Cloud in that movie . The Necro terrain is really annoying. The green trails beneath the Necropolis hero are ridiculous. The "underworld" looks good. The guy in the movie had nice butt... ooop, forget I've said that . And I'm getting really concerned with the system requrements.

P.S. Actually the hex grid was a square one. It looks good anyway, but that changes things a bit. How's diagonal movement done? And can mass-hitters (such as Hydras, Magic Elementals) attack up to 8 targets at once?

active time combat system? hmm..i dunno, i mean in Final Fantasy the amount of the enemies are low so it's easy to decide which one to attack or use magic, but in Homm...i dunno, man. like what's gonna happen if you get into a critical battle, like at the end of a campaign, getting nervous and all. as you all well know best way to do it, to be patient. and if there is a limit, it may screw some things up. no offence meant, if they've made it fit and balanced it may still work out after all.

i don't think that size of the battlefield really matters, during the battle it's not like unit vs another unit, it's units vs units, but we don't see every sinle one of them on battlefield, right? it's the strategy that you use that matters.

too bad i couldn't see the new video, the link works but i can't seem to watch the video, oh well.
