I disagree bort. My feeling is that this has entirely to do with the state that just voted. Mississippi is as deep south as you can get and bears the shameful legacy of being a slave state. The racial divide is starting to become bridged but Mississippi I believe has thus far managed to elude the grasp of egalitarianism.
The south used to be largely democrat. However, when Lyndon Johnson signed into law the Civil Rights Act in, what was it, 1964 he accurately predicted that the dems would lose the south because of it. And that's precisely what happened. The Civil Rights Act reinforced in the African American community a sense of allegiance to the democrats and the disaffected whites fled to the Republicans.
This is racial politics at its core. Blacks supported Obama 91/9 and whites supported Clinton 75/25. The thing is, I'm surprised and impressed Obama has scored as high as 25% among the whites in places like Mississippi and South Carolina. It is a testament to the progress we've made as a nation and a testament to the strength of the candidacy of Barack Obama.

I'm sure there's been some progress in the south among the southerners, but you can't discount the mass migration of northerners to the Sun Belt during the 80s/90s or whenever it was. Although I suspect Mississippi got far fewer migrants than places like Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Texas. This country is slowly becoming more homogenous over time.

When I Moved To Oregon
Do you know what the first thing I said was? "Where are all the black people?" Do you think that might have anything to do with what you said Binabik? I was raised a southerner in Texas and then a soldier for a number of years after that. Having that mixture of racial people has always been a part of my life until I moved here. I guess I did sorta wonder where all those scared white folks went back in the day. Who would have thought they evolved into hippies? And no not those chemically altered ones that come from Colorado. I mean true tree huggin-medicinal marijuana-no nukes havin-corn wavin-whaler ship sinkin-no professional sports havin-let's go on a hike and read some C.S. Lewis-granola chewin-Dungeons & Dragons playin-Fung Shway wannabe-orchestral tuneups and Lord of the Rings and Star Wars fans and the number one artist out here is a toss up between Weird AL and Disney sitcoms. No battles were ever fought here. No songs were ever passed down through the generations. They tried to name their cities as quasi New England as they possibly could.....except for "Lebanon" Oregon(sigh). Oh but we've got our mountain water don't we! All our flippin food is fresh and organic! ORGANIC ORGANIC ORGANIC! I AM SO SICK OF HEARING THAT WORD! You know what the men do up here? They effin play their ridiculous musical instruments or go hiking or kayaking or some stupid nature lovin music nonsense! Thank God I wasn't here when Bambi came out in the movies!
I MISS MY HOME! Where's the brisket and mexicans and the black people and the songs of tradition? Where is that home-grown love for a completely senseless brawl in the name of true sportsmanship? Where's the horrible country singers who get paid more than the Queen of England? Where's old folks who learned from their ancestors that the bible teaches us not to be racist? Where's the moonshine families, the Hatfields and McCoys? Where's my Dukes of Hazzard and the mariachis? Where are the mexican weddings that let any old passerby come on in to the catholic church side building for the aroma of beans and other assorted mexican dishes? Where are my texas rangers and baseball clubs? Where are the kids who don't care about anything but their restored muscle cars? Where are the front yards with old rusted chevys and tires in overgrown grass? Where are the chain smokers who live for their outdoor grills and superbowl parties? Where did all the hair on men go? Dude I swear I seen too many guys who shave their flippin arms and chest and legs! Where is that god-awful ego that makes a person think the rest of country could never live without your state's contribution? Where are the football coaches who drive and deliver wonder bread trucks for a job but then hit the field for all out war with a group of barely teenagers tellin them to take one look at the other team and see the fire? Tellin them if they don't git out there and fight then the coach promises to break their teeth and send em to their uncles for a birthday present?
Some days I get tired of all this Oregonian wimpiness. Some days I'm proud to have been raised a Texan. Especially on a day when I see how terribly racially divided Mizsippi really is.

As far as the Southern trend in the Black vote, Gootch has that issue spot on. If others find the trend of the Black vote in a few of the still more racially polarized states disturbing, just remember that trend did not begin to turn in the direction it's now going until all those White folks rushed to the polls in Iowa and voted en masse for Obama, AND after he'd closed a 26% lead by Clinton in New Hampshire, only weeks before that primary was held, to only 2.6%. Before that the Southern Black constituencies were still devoted to the wife of the "first Black President," Bill Clinton...
And let's not forget Obama's rather staggering victories in states like Wyoming (26% lead), Wisconsin (17% lead), Idaho (62% lead), Alaska (51% lead), Minnesota (34% lead), North Dakota (25% lead) and the like, none of which are exactly teeming with people of color...

Florida & Michigan
It's official: There will be NO RE-VOTE in Florida.
Michigan is still floundering around trying to decide what to do.
Everybody's arguing about whether to seat delegates for either state.
Only Clinton was on the ballot in Michigan. Obama and Edwards withdrew their names from the Michigan ballot, but then did not do so in Florida after Clinton failed to do so in Michigan.
So the final counts were:
FLORIDA:
Clinton - 50%
Obama - 33%
Edwards - 14%
MICHIGAN:
Clinton - @55%
Uncomitted - @40%
Here's the best solution I've seen so far:
Give her Florida as is, in exchange for a caucus in Michigan.

Yes, Obama campaign fears the momentum a new primary victory in Florida could bring to Hillary. And by having a caucus in Michigan, an event that Obama will most likely win, they will get to shine in the press by a favourable light. So yes, this clearly would be good for Obama. However, inspite of this scenario benefitting more Obama than Clinton, that might be the only reasonable choise. The delegates should be seated, this is a way too close of a fight to let some states not be heard. And as it seems, the Florida will not do a re-vote. So they should be seated as such. Seating the Michigan votes as it is wouldn't work that well. Having a primary instead of a caucus there and seating Flrida as it is would be better for Hillary.

*sigh*
I knew you'd want a "Caucus" in Michigan. Why am I not surprised that you didn't ask for a "primary".
In other news, I watched Obama's address this morning. It re-affirmed my decision to change my vote for him. One thing I will say about the nature of his presidency is that he will be in a losing battle against the demigods of healthcare. And no, I didn't overstate or mischaracterize when I specifically used the descriptive expletive, "Demigods". You people will see just what they are capable of when he becomes president. It will be the one thing he will be most criticized for. But the problem isn't in the presidency. The problem lies in a legislative body beholding to lobbyist soldiers unleashed by the next global rulers. Oil is on the outs and healthcare is on the rise.

Quote: During a news conference in Jordan earlier Tuesday, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee repeatedly said Iran was supplying al Qaeda. Iran is predominately a Shiite country and is not aiding the Sunni dominated Al-Qaeda.
McCain ultimately corrected himself after Sen. Joe Lieberman whispered in his ear.
"I'm sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al Qaeda. I am sorry," the Arizona senator said.
"After eight years of the Bush Administration's incompetence in Iraq, McCain's comments don't give the American people a reason to believe that he can be trusted to offer a clear way forward," -DNC spokeswoman Karen Finney
Maybe McCain is getting too old for the presidency? Not only that he is completely unaware of anything related to teh economy, his credentials as a good commander in chief are declining.. Unless the people actually believe that waging war on everyone everywhere will grant you the safety you need...
