Poll Question: 'Build' Engine FPS
I'm sure a few of us are familiar with these old FPS games. For those who've had the chance to play them, which one do you like the best?
I'm going with Blood, because it was the first Build engine game I ever played and is the most fun, in my opinion. It's still on my computer, I might add.

I've got a legal Duke Nukem 3D CD on my shelf. Go ponder.
Truth is, its interactivity wasn't topped by any other FPS for quite a while, which - along with Duke's witty comments - made DN3D a worthy opponent to the technologically superior Quake. I can still remember the Duke-Quake wars of '97... *sigh*

Have you tried Blood? It's got a nice twist of horror and humor; just more of the latter. There's not a whole lot of storyline, but that isn't very important. There's this cool level that takes after the film "The Shining" complete with the guy frozen in the snow.
It came with a map editor; I've made choke maps for a long time and it's always been very fun.

i will have to go for blood. i got it for my birthday when i 9 i think. i played it and didnt do very well. when i was about 11 or 12 i played it again and got past the first level. i never got far. only about the 4th or 5th level on each but i remember it being a very good FPS that provided entertianment and a good laugh
i remember getting as far as one level past the maze level and getting to a level where if u jump out the window and continue u fall off a cliff.

I made this map for Blood. I created a fort surrounded by lava, with a bridge giving the shoreline monsters access into the walls. The monsters regenerate after they die, as my intention for this map was to be a kill, kill, kill, kill, and then stop kinda thing. The ammo regenerates too, so I'm not helpless. This isn't the best map I've made, but it's still cool to test.

Oh, and I have a submarine map, too. I mean, had. On my old computer, that is.

Duke Nukem 3D came with a map editor too, so nothing new there I never really had the patience to learn how it worked though.

I had been using the Blood MapEdit program for a while already when I decided to check Duke3D's one. I took a look at it and saw that a lot of the command thingies and key combos were very different. I decided to leave it alone and stick to what I was comfortable with.
I'll share more cool pics later.

I beat all of Blood and the Plasma Pak upgrade, but Cryptic Passage is way too hard to beat without a walkthrough. I get lost often when playing that. I play on the hardest difficulty, so I'm often fried by a few shots from those Cultists.
I dunno if Wolf3D uses the Build Engine; perhaps it is some other old engine. I know that a guy name Ken Silverman created the Build Engine that Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Redneck Rampage. It's a nifty tool for creating levels, but you can tell that there are limitations. You cannot have more than one room above another room, and bridges are tricky (or impossible) to create from the actual surface area.
Please note that you don't have to be a math genius to use this Build editor. I suck at math more than ever and I've some good experience with it. It's quite easy, unlike those geometric nightmares such as Unreal's engine. That's way beyond my knowledge of how to use.

I really recommend it. Blood is an awesome game.
I remember playing the trial version of Blood about five years ago. The first level took some time to master. I remember the Zombies being more goofy than creepy. When I first saw a human Cultist, I thought he'd join me in killing the Zombies, but I was wrong. His shotgun hurt a lot worse than rusty axes.
I always used to laugh really hard when a Cultist caught on fire. Something about the animation and the sound effect of the guys screaming and waving his arms was hilarious to me for some demented reason. I kept playing and laughing until I eventually played and not laughed at all.
Those dark temple levels with the eerie background voices were creepy. There's this one part in a level in the first episode that traps you inside a room and unleashes a compartment full of Zombies at you. It freaked me out at first, but now I'm always prepared for it.
Argh! I hate those hands! It takes a hell of a long time getting them off; it's often too late when that happens.

yes i already have blood. i love the way that there many options in the game like 5 lvls of skill, 4 lvls to play, both normal and special fires of weapons and of course the funny bits.
i really hate hands cause u cant kill em, i also hate those dogs that breath fire. so many times have i cought on fire and not been able to put it out. i also hate the sea monsters because they really freak my out when it gets dark down there and they can also walk.
oh i also love the interaction especially in the carnival lvl. u get to play the games and pick up bonuses.
whats ur fav lvl?

Yeah, it sucks if you can't shoot the hands fast enough. As for the hellhounds, I hate their fire breath too. Those mutts were widely considered the most difficult opposition in Blood. Rightly so, given their speed and firey ferocity. The cool thing about hellhounds is that if you can knock them into water, they'll die. I didn't even know that until I went on the Internet.
My favorite level might be the Phantom Express level (E1M3). It was cool to fight on a moving train. I really like the fight in the dining car; it's good practice for your guns. Oh, that part where the Zombies come out of the crate in the dark baggage car was cool.
I really like some of the missions in Episode Two. There's the Shining spinoff that was fun to play.
The cool thing about games like Blood is that you can kill those wimpy civilians. Games like Jedi Knight force you to be cautious if you want to join the light side. In Blood, you can pretty much shoot some rolling balls of flaming napalm into a window or around a corner and not have to worry about repercussions of any kind.

Quote: I dunno if Wolf3D uses the Build Engine
Uh huh. And I'm not entirely sure if HoMM3 uses the engine of Warlords.
Given that Duke Nukem 3D was the first game to use the Build engine, and that Wolfenstein 3D is somewhat older than DN3D, and also that Wolfenstein's engine had far more limitations, I say that it is impossible for the two games using the same engine.
