Good Side

I believe there are good and bad sides to only 4 levels. If you have four levels, there will be less creatures, yes.
But 3do have announced that a level one creature in Homm4, will be equal to a level two creature in Homm3.
If it keeps going in this pattern, a level 4 creature is as powerful as a level 8 creature in Homm3. And we all know that the highest creature is a level seven. I believe more powerful creatures would be harder and take longer to defeat. For me, this is a good point.

I would have thought there should be five levels, but not to be.

I have noticed that heroes 4 only has 4 levels of creatures, yet heroes 3 has 7, why have the makers done something like this, I only see a downside to this

Well actually you get 2 lvl 1 creatures so that makes 5 creatures. In total there are as much as 8 creatures in the castle of wich 5 are avaliable. In homm3 we only have 7 creatures so actually we get more

It started with 6 creatures, but i'm guessing that the Magic: The Gathering people told them to cut it down a few notches.  Check out the thread: "There will be 6 levels!!!" for more info.  That was back when there was still a chance for the 6 levels!

One of the best site for HoMM4 out there, infos get regular updates, there is even a chat room to talk and argue.

Oh,5 creatures +2 Heroes=7 units, same as HoMM3.With Heroes involved on the battlefield, there is no need for 7 creatures per towns.

Some infos you might like to know:

Titans:

100-150 Damage
6 Haste
