You see me oft,
In woods and town.
With my roots above,
I must grow down.
Rain
You hear it speak,
For it has a hard tongue.
But it cannot breathe,
For it has not a lung.
Thunder
You can count on them,
though some would rather curse them.
You can speak dear to them,
though well all know 'tis just in vain.
Fingers/hands/feet?

Philosophical one?...
Should have guessed it. Is it only one word Unkahaakon?
Oldtimer, wrong answers. I give some help...
You see me oft,
In woods and town.
With my roots above,
I must grow down.
Not Rain, (Six letters)
You hear it speak,
For it has a hard tongue.
But it cannot breathe,
For it has not a lung.
Not Thunder, (Four letters)
You can count on them,
though some would rather curse them.
You can speak dear to them,
though well all know 'tis just in vain.
Not Fingers/hands/feet? (Five letters in plural)

Stars? or Fates?
So far I've gotten one reply in the SCA newsgroup that led me to a wonderful site with some very old riddles on it it. Unfortunately, there's no answers given ...but it's worth a look anyway.

No answers?!...
ARGH! I hate that...but still very nice looking site. Thank you Unkahaakon...
So it isn't one word in English. I hope it is short. I have tried to think it but need some more time.
And guess what. Your answers were as wrong as Oldtimers to those two riddles.
That six letter one is surely hard if you haven't been in Finland or in other c*** place. (no cursing here just tip)
Four letter one is quite close to Iron but not exactly.
And that Five letter one is more material one...

Yes my hint made it really easy.
Should know Pleuris better to answer that. My mind is empty as...void.
Must ask Pleuris so he could ask the question...heheh
Anybody else knows the answer to Unkahaakons riddle?...

Another hint ..be more superficial LOL
In the meantime, this one should be easier. Remember that it dates back to roughly the 10th Century, and the "correct' answer was very specific, but there's a general answer as well. I wouldn't expect anyone to get the specific answer, so let's try for the broader one. Ready?
Black I am,
with seven score legs,
And more than forty men's measure.
I have broad wings,
But lay not eggs,
And what I eat is treasure.

But if I had one,
I wouldn't part with it for any sum.

Oh, great...
Another historical riddle. Just what we needed when the first one is like impossible to solve. Next thing you see is someone saying "piquedram rules" and you Unk (can I call you that? If I was you, I wouldn't) would say it's the right answer...Oh, geez have to put my brains to work.
Here is some riddles more so you don't have to think only those old ones...
You can spin, wheel and twist.
But it can turn without moving.
--------------------------------
What is it of yours that you
see every day, but our Leader
sees only rarely?
--------------------------------
What goes with a wagon that
doesn't benefit the wagon,
but the wagon cannot move without?
Hah, hah...Want to see you answer these riddles along with those earlier ones. These were easy for me when I played Betrayl at Krondor and now I cannot solve one historic riddle argh!...

OK ..I'll give people who may be seeing them for the first time a crack at them .... and post the answers tomorrow sometime.
It should be noted that I hit my roommate with both riddles a bit ago before he had his coffee. He came up with the correct answers after just a little thought.

...have you even tried to figure them out yet?
...well as long as this is here, I might as well post a riddle, however easy it might be
The king dies and two men, the true heir and an impostor, both claim to be his long-lost son. Both fit the description of the rightful heir: about the right age, height, coloring and general appearance. Finally, one of the elders proposes a test to identify the true heir. One man agrees to the test while the other flatly re-fuses. The one who agreed is immediately sent on his way, and the one who re-fused is correctly identified as the rightful heir.
Can you figure out why?
