Star Control Series
I havent played Star Control 1, however Ive spent many a day on Starcon2, and now on the Ur-Quan Masters (a freeware remake with voice and updated graphics)
Starcontrol 2 had the Supermelee game built in, which was alot of fun at 2 players, one on the joystick and 1 on the keyboard, you could choose an army from all the ships in the game, it would give a point amount to each ship, so if you choose all shofixi you would have much much less points (and a harder time) then someone who took all black ur-quan.
in the game, there are still races I cant seem to get, the crystal guys with the little ships that build a laser infront of their main ship, you need to revive them and I dont know how. the game could run on for a very long time, and you can get stranded in the middle of the galaxy if you run out of fuel, luckily the only time that happened, I had some bio to trade with the trader for fuel. but after a certain amount of time he dissapears.
the game was real time, based, if you took to long to do stuff, the ur-quan would destroy you, or some races may kill off other races, (Pkunk). really good game, I suggest Ur-quan Masters to anyone
Ive played abit of Starcon 3, I really like the battles on it, the 3d effect. although, (and I dont remember completely) I hated the map. the rest of the game wasnt so bad I guess. Not enough memmory of the game to give a full critique

I played Star Control 2 and 3. I think I finished 2, long time ago. I played 3 more recently, I think I might have finished it twice even.
I like 3 for the storyline, it's quite deep and twisted. Some wise races, some funny races also, and some ethical dillemas. The hegemonic crux is quite funny because first it seems like this huge scary force, but later you discover how it's all made on some arrogant deciet and debt-enslavement of stoopid doogs. Hmmm suddenly made me think of WB and IMF
The leaders of the crux in their huge meatal robots suits, and later who they actually turn out to be And the super-advanced species who turned themselves into space cows! And no, that actually does not make the game silly, as there is a very wise reason why they did that!
I think the storyline is great. But space combats are not very balanced. Some ships are much better than the rest. Once you get Doogs that can regenerate, the game is basically won.
It's definitely one of the best storylines in a space game that I've seen. 2 was good, but 3 has a much deeper and more unexpectedly twisted plot.

You can wait for others to do it, but if they don't know how, you'll wait forever.
Be an example of what you want to see on HC and in the world.

You know, your completely right, I haven't played in so long that I forgot most of what you speak of, but ya the game had alot of cool inovations and storylines.
I completely forgot you develop technology (with artifacts) instead of trading for it, I forgot about the Doogs the battles were 3d which was neat.
the map you could rotate, stand still, or it would rotate on its own. (which made things difficult)
I think im going to reinstall that game when I get home
although unlike Starcon 2 you cant sell your people into slavery for spare parts or fuel. (and they get mad and stop enlisting )
