HAVEN and INFERNO creatures REVEALED!

or here:

Haven: "A feudal Holy Empire, the strongest realm of Ashan. (...) On the battlefield, Haven troops are known to be extremely resistant, relying more on the mighty power of brutal force than on the delicate art of magic. The heroes of the Haven faction will develop skills and abilities to support the hurricane of steel and fury that will rush into the enemy’s rank."

Creatures: 1) Peasant / Militia Guard 2) Archer / Marksman 3) Squire / Knight 4) Griffin / Royal Griffin 5) Priest / Inquisitor 6) Cavalier / Paladin 7) Angel / Archangel

Inferno: Demons are an alien pantheon of hostile monsters that are bent on conquering Ashan. Fortunately, they are imprisoned in Hell (a “dimensional jail” created in the lava core of the planet) and can’t exist for long in the material (surface) world, except when they are summoned by a sorcerer or when they can possess a mortal body.
On the battlefield, Inferno troops are famous for their insane brutality in both the might and magic fields. Inferno troops will rush into the melee, while creatures with magic abilities will disrupt the normal order of things to call for demonic reinforcements or to summon the fury of the fire element on their enemy.

Creatures: 1) Imp / Familiar 2) Horned Demon / Horned Overseer 3) Hell Hound / Cerberus 4) Succubus / Succubus Favorite 5) Hell Stallion / Nightmare 6) Pit Fiend / Pit Lord 7) Devil / Arch Devil

Finally some useful info!

Quote:
Haven: "A feudal Holy Empire, the strongest realm of Ashan.

I like the fact that the new Haven will be closer to a zealous medieval empire than its Heroes III rendition. I guess this is just the beginning of the darker overtones mentioned in recent Development's Diary article. The "holy" in "Holy Empire" now sounds sort of ironic and scary. In addition, the priest upgrade is called Inquisitor, which reminds me of Spanish torture chambers... I mean that in a good way. I really enjoyed its incarnations in Disciples 2 and Age of Wonders! Here's hoping the unit will have the appropriate skills such as Death Ward or Holy Damage, at least versus the Undead and/or Inferno opponents. Finally, I also like the creature looks - it's less generic than the rest of the concept art and fits the theme well. The warhammer is somehow over the top - maybe a mace would suit it better. However, both Priest and Inquisitor look like a basic unit - I thought the upgrade should have a more dignified look (either the cardinal's robe or the Inquisition hood).

The Peasant/Militia combination looks logical, but I hope they will both have unique abilities; the traditional distinction between a tax payer and a basic melee unit (with first strike perhaps) would work fine. Such a combination would present an interesting choice for the player: to earn gold or go offensive? It might add another level of strategy for Haven early in the game. By the way, was there Militia in Heroes I?

Archer/Marksman unit is a classic, and I hope they won't mess it up with the area attack I think we saw in the unofficial alpha screenshots. It may work for Cyclops, but I can't picture a crossbow dealing mass damage. I'd prefer no range penalty, piercing attack or even minor fire damage to shooting in all directions.

Griffin concept art looks great and the final version is not bad at all (the upgrade - Cyber Griffin - is abysmal, though). The creature is present everywhere as the symbol of this "Holy Empire", which somewhat explains its comeback to otherwise all-Human town. Here's hoping there's a bit of a story behind it, too!

It's intersting that Swordsman and Griffin have switched their places (levels), which is probably due to the aforementioned significance of the latter in the sequel.

Hey, I am not buying the Paladin implementation! The developers must have realized that a number of fans is still fond of Heroes II creature, so they've decided to simply re-name the Champion into "Paladin". The good thing is they dropped the "Crusader" title, infamous among some fans for its real life connotations.

There's nothing new to say about the Angel - you either love it or hate it.

On to...

Inferno: Demons are imprisoned in Hell (a “dimensional jail” created in the lava core of the planet) and can’t exist for long in the material (surface) world

I wonder if this is just a background story, like a plot for the campaign or something, or if it will have actual repercussions in the very game. How does it function then? Will Inferno creatures be of lava/underground alignment, getting the terrain bonuses and penalties?

As for the creature line-up, I am glad they got rid of the obscure "Balor" name and returned well-known and self-explanatory "Pit Fiend" and "Pit Lord".

What's a "Succubus Favorite", though? Perhaps a native speaker could tell us how it sounds in English.

I still prefer Heroes IV Nightmare, f course - it was as black as the darkness it came from, with flames in its mane... they don't come any cooler than that! I was hoping Nival designers would compromise the WoG style - introducing both  Hell Steed/Stallion and the Nightmare we know.

Oh, the Imp looks cute if strange...

Like ChimTheGrim noticed, Angel and Devil share the same cross-like symbol on their weapons. Could it be  part of the deeper, more mature approach we were promised in the latest articles... or am I daydreaming again? We'll have to wait and see!

In conclusion - and I can't believe I am saying this - the bottom line is I like what I see. This is still just Heroes III in 3D, but it just may turn out right!

You can't take homm too seriously. For someone with a bit of historical knowledge Haven town looks very, very pretensious. You get knights in shiny armor, every last of them just and noble. You get inquisitors who pretend not to be pinnacle of xenophobia and intolerance. There's lots of talk of holy wars with no mention of fact that it's the most cruel and ruthless war possible, because makes everything justified.

The way Haven/Castle is presented in Homm serries makes me actually feel sympathy for bad guys. There's aura of honesty about them - they don't pretend to be someone else.

I however do not like what I see, these drawing mock what the real creatures are supposed to be, like what people do with adobe-photoshop and just tweak old upts and say "Hey the tint's different, and he's got a new head, he obviously new and exciting", these pictures show that heroes is slowly dying away from classic red dragons and suchlike. These creatures look okay, but they are not what they are claiming to be, they're just not what I like, they are not what real angels are, they are not what real dragons are, they are not anything. A poor attempt at creating "new" creatures.

Arghh, these look like warcraft III drawings now that I think of it...

They are mockeries of real monsters, and I fail to see why you enjoy their tweaked look so much.
I however will not for one minute think highly of these doodles.

Dunno about others, but I find it rather disturbing when people speak of real angels and real dragons.

You want a real dragon in HoMM? Fine. Too bad that IIRC the RL creatures that have the word "dragon" in their names are small, tree-climbing lizards that can't even fly.

Then what pray tell would you have fight against the inferno? A bunch of "tolerant" and "loving" guys?

The rest of the classes would have no reason to fight the inferno. In fact the Necro town would probably like them.

That's why in my opinion you need a haven that is actually good.

Also I mean heroes isn't real life. Just because you think everyone in history who was a religious dude was a hypocrit or a bigot doesn't mean that everyone in heroes is one. Especially Sir Mullich! That dude is a pimp.
