Ridiculous aspects of H5 - new movie
After watching the latest movie about H5 (necro battles and underground map), these are the things that I find to be ridiculous about H5 gameplay and animations:
1. The map is lovely but strategy will be impossible because:
a) It's so very colorful and burdened with details that you miss the big picture. The passable areas are not obvious.
b) the creature and buildings size are so small compared to other objects on the map that it will be impossible to navigate and make decisions without having to zoom in and rotate. This is particularly clear for the underground where you don't see squat because of the cave walls arching OVER the map, which is really stupid. Very very tiresome.
2. The hero animation on the map: they've tryied so hard to make it very detailed (and they've succeeded) but the animation is still "bumpy". No smooth transition between angles of movement and especialy pay atention to the rear of the horse: it's almost mechanical. Too bad.
3. Battlefield:
a) WAY TOO SMALL!!! If the peasants cross it in 2 turns and the cerberi get to attack the shooters in the first turn , THAT IS A DISASTER, and there is no second way about it. There is no more tactical decision to be made.
b) Movement animations: again, the monsters are painstakingly made to move smoothly, then when it comes to rotating towards the enemy, they do it like robots on a platform. Ridiculous! Heroes 3 had better transitions!!!
c) Attack animations: the way cerberi attack look like ballet to me. They don't bite, they dance with the enemy. The way liches recoil after the attack also suggest robots, not animated creatures.
d) Blood puffs are stupid. At least they could have made them smaller.
e) I hope the size of that meteor shower is due to grandmastering it, or the spell being ultimate level, otherways it's way to overpowered. It's more like Armaggedon.
f) I'm really disappointed of the squared grid, it looks crappy (with the green movement shaddow even more).
OK, these are the remarks after the first play. I'll watch it again and maybe post some more. Don't be shy and try to contradict me if you can.
EDIT:
g) Forgot about the death cloud of the liches: very bad and uninspired. Blue? With sort of pentagram? C'mon.

Is it true that the undead bleed, too?

^ True as death.
The way I see it, this game will blow. They've ruined it. I mean, I'll play it, probably enjoy it somewhat, but it will be just another game . It's too childish (which reminds me how sick am I from all you cry-baby sissies, complaining about the blood (the blood itself, not its ridiculous interpretation) in Heroes). It's like they want to make it more and more comercial every time, like it ain't got enought fans already. I never thought I'll be so dissapointed with something made from russians. Yeah, sure, it's not late to make things right, but I doubt it. Hell, I'm so sad I can't snowin' swear .

Here's the movie (copyied from Vlaad's post):
http://gameswelt.de/pc/downloads/movies/detail.php?item_id=51413
I'm worried about the animations because the first video didn't have any and they said were working on it. Now this one have them, so... they must be done, I guess. And they're pretty cheap.

I admit this looks pathetic, but it also looks unfinished. Here's hoping they will change it.
What about the underground...? I thought it was OK. It's better than Heroes 4 for sure, when the artist must have been color blind.

Indeed the battlefield is too small... its just like in Homm1 when fliers and fast units can reach the other side in a single turn. Im beginning to wonder whether if ubi actually considered strategical battlefield play, or if the winner of a battle is decided by whoever has the lagest army...

Well, yes and no... I agree the H4 had so many red and blue mushrooms that it finally poisoned me, but this one is very easy to get lost in. This applies to the whole map actually, the creatures are so small and insignificant in that colorful labyrinth that it's hard to find your way out, not to mention a clear strategic view... You definitely have to constantly rotate the tunnels to find your way and see all the map objects.
I haven't played the game, of course, but I can see that even Fabrice is having troubles in finding creatures that he wants to engage in demonstrations: Think about it! He knows what he's looking for and he finds it with difficulty! I think that says a lot about gameplay.

You can zoom out the surface... but what about the underground?
If it can be seen in this movie, what does it look like?

What do you mean? Have you seen only part of the movie?
It looks very complicated, so if you don't play it on a 19' monitor to say the least, you're finished... It may be that the poor quality of the recording makes me see it like that, but it's quite hard to distinguish the map creatures and objects, and the cave walls are so high in 3D that they can obscure a lot of aspects. H4 had this problem to a limited extent, and those cave walls were much smaller... imagine them 3 times that tall...

i felt that the battle field wasnt wrong in HOMM1, the problem was that flyers just had too much movement

What about the commentary during the movie? Although the sound is bad, Psychobabble of CH made out a few things:
Quote: There appears to be a 'ghosts' feature which is optional in non-hotseat multiplayer games. This will give the players some pseudo-heroes (ghosts) which they can only use when it is not their proper turn. These ghosts don’t directly interact with the real world like a proper hero does but seem to be able to scout, slow down enemy heroes and steal resources. Ghosts can battle with ghosts from other teams, but not 'real' stacks.
Fabrice said the idea was to kind of make it like hotseat mode, where you can look over the other player's shoulder while you're waiting for your turn. It sounds interesting and it should give players something to do while they're waiting for the other person to finish their turn. He also mentioned the simlutaenous turns mode again. He didn't give any new details but did re-confirm that it will be mainly used to speed up the early game.
The new ghost mode sounds promising...! Reminds me of a special hero type from Disciples 2 called spy.
The simultaenous turns exist in Age of Wonders, another Heroes-like TBS. There are some major exploits against the AI, though.
Quote: Fabrice also spoke about another multiplayer mode - duel. He predicted these duel games would take about 15 minutes and would involve minimal adventure map interaction. The primary focus of the mode would be the player selecting some armies to have a tactical fight with the opponent.
I think this means all five promised multiplayer modes have been announced:
'Vanilla' multiplayer
Hotseat
Simultaenous turns
Ghost mode
Duel mode

If I remember correctly, all flyers in H1 could fly anywhere in their turn, regardless of speed. I may be wrong, I didn't play it since long time.
By making battlefield sooo small (even if in not all cases) and itroducing stupid and broken squares (instead of hexes) they're screwing the combat part of Heroes. And battles were always core of Homm.

yeap also in heroes 2 the flyers can go anywhere... I just saw the movie, and I think that the battlefield there is the middle one... no the largest one... in the beta you can see the large battlefield... and some units need four turns to get the other side...

Are you saying that the battlefield can get smaller than that? Like, say, "slaughter version" - let's punch each other quickly, for the sake of game speed? That would be the end of it all...

if you only have 7 skeletons and you splite them in 7 stacks of one skeleton each then you will have the large version of the battlefield... that's why I don't see this as a real problem... but there are a lot of complains about it... so maybe, just like with the other new stuff they will put this optional too...

I don't like to start splitting troops when I want a large battlefield and then splice them back when I want a small one, it will become painstaking pretty soon. Even so, with 4 troops this should be, if this logic works, a medium field, which really makes me shiver at the thought of a small one. And in the beginning of the game, what if splitting troops is bad for the outcome? If you split your skeletons (supposedly having few of them in the first week) and then the enemy reaches your ranks, you're s****d.

you can consider that as a problem... or you can consider that as one more strategic problem... the second I think until we have mora of this the game will be better...
