Perhaps it's good then that I have only played MM9 then and not any of it's other incarnations so that I am not really comparing it to anything.  But I got to say I kind of like MM9 ok.  I mean it's no Grandia 2 but it will do.

Hey there.

- VI was awesome <-- just happend to stumble upon it in a 2hand comp store back in the days .

- VII is really cool too, when you sign that document all hell breaks loose, but still it gives you a feeling that now you own something besides your inventory. And the "game in the game " tavern tournament is just up my alley :- ) + Alignment shift also has a nice ring to it.

Maybe you should talk to 'bloodandhonor'. Something tells me you two have something in common

Might and Magic threads belong in the Library too, btw.

Oh, and I nearly forgot, Might and Magic VIII is the best game in existence.

Not so keen on 7, didn't like 6, 1-5 are ok, 9 didn't like either.

If you ever want to talk M&M8, I'm here.

MM3 is fun, I've gotten farther into that game than any other MM I've played. It's enjoyable, so much in fact that I haven't played Heroes 3 in over a week now.

If anyone here has played MM3, I'd like to chat about it.

Well that was a lucky find EvilLoynis, because I can only find it on Ebay. I don't actually own it right now I'm trying to get it because I want to play it again.

Guitarguy, M&M 3 is pretty good... it's the first one which goes beyond basic text really. It's also hard, not only to get far in but to know where you are or what you're doing, especially in that bloody starting city! I've got it on PSP, but I do own the disc of M&M1-5.

MM3 is going great, but it'll be a while before I get close to finishing it. I've gotten so far into the game that I have no idea if I missed something or not. The puzzles are very tricky; there's this one math-related puzzle that required that I check a walkthrough. At the same time, MM has some puzzles that are seemingly impossible to complete without outside help. That's one of my biggest gripes about the otherwise enjoyable game.

Actually the M&M8 I bought seems to be by a secondary company called Sold Out Software.  Anyway there is a web address that you might be able to mail order a game from, it is www.sold-out.co.uk  .    Good Luck, hope that helps.

Just started playing M&M8.  Got to say that I hate the controls already.  I like the controls for 9 a lot better where you could use the mouse to look around, and to attack or cast you quick spell.

Thanks for the help. I'll take a look.

Well the controls of 9 are interesting, and they're certainly different to all the others. I didn't like them at first, because it makes it a totally different game. But I like the 8 controls, guess it's just what you're used to. You'll get used to it

Remember to press space bar to loot the bodies with speed, and I think its TAB to alternate on always run. Keep it on always run.
You hardly ever need to look around in this game, just get near the item and press space bar. It's fast paces, running around with the arrows and hitting A+S. I find that alternating between the two allows you to attack faster, but it does less damage...

There is quick spell too. But when you get further into the game you find that going to your spell book provides a good break from the onslaught... haha.

Keyboard Controls

I gotta say though that a Strafe key  would make this game easier.  I like the fact that in M&M9 your arrow/Quick spell was right mouse and regular atk/arrow was left.  I mean I am going it solo with a DarkElf  and am level 20 and can train to 22 and I am in the desert with the firelake.  It's tough to kill those gogs as they keep moving so fast, the centaurs were tough also.

Got Really Screwed!!

I was doing my solo DarkElf game and I was looking for Cauri to promote me to ah DE Patriarch so that I could learn GM Archery and M Fire, I did find her and those peasents but I accidently clicked twice on the Space bar<, or whatever your action key is,  and when I went back everyone acted as if I didn't find her, I mean I had her in my party from the tavern/merc guild thing in RavenShore  and the guy acted like he still didn't know where she was!

I finall got so mad that I just started the game again and found her right away when I was like level 7 or 8.  Instant Level 20,  had like 200 000 exp when I finished that quest.  Went back to Raven Shore and took out the wolf pack so easily.  Almost 1 shot kills, ounce I had GM archery.  Now I just have to go back to Dagger Wound and clear out that snake temple.  Just hopped across the water to the boat when first there.

Does anyone else think that it is really weird that the DE can learn GM disarm trap and master perception but can't even learn basic/novice ID Monster???  I mean it's kind of obvious that the Dark Elf is mostly a scout/thief type of character and ID monster should fit in there.  I mean just take away one of the element magics or Sword skill, dagger is fine.

Plus until you get it GM, Dark Bolt, the Dark elf skill is pretty useless other than the Travlers bounty you get at Expert  which is easily done without.

PS.  Thanks Nice Guy for the strafe.  Really helps when taking out those bolders in the DarkDwarf cave or in the Druid Stone Circle.

One of most fun thing to do is clear out the dragon cave, where the strafe really comes in handy.

And you get some of the best artefacts in the game in the one final room, however you can't reload if you don't like them. Lure them running backwards and if they overwhelm you just leave and rest.

What you should do when you go artefact hunting, before you first enter an area with a random artefact (Ironsand, Ravenshire, Alvar) for the very first time, save firstly and then enter, run and see what the artefact is and if you don't like it you can reload and enter again, regenerating it. And do this every year when they regenerate again. I won't tell you where the artifacts are though But if you try to do that with the dragon cave you need to clear it out all over again...

I started Clouds of Xeen last night, after having abandoned my aimless MM3 game. Unfortunately, the game only runs correctly if I play without sound. Luckily, the sound is an expendable part of the otherwise fun game. I left my unfinished MM3 game sometime late last year, so it feels great to be back having fun.

I trust some of you are still familiar with MM4-5 in case I need help later?

I heard so much about this series, but never played or saw one of them. For the matter of fact this series is related to HoMM (or vice versa), i start to get curious about MM. Is there any chance to get a demo of one of them? Or maybe some of them are already free for download?
Which ones seem to be the better ones? (heard some parts were not that good)

I'm fairly noobish to the Might and Magic series, but I can tell you that it's some good old-fashion fun. I bought a CD called The Ultimate Might and Magic Archives six years ago, perhaps by sheer luck before these old games disappeared from store shelves forever. Included on the disk are the original classics, 1-5 as well as a bonus adventure. I've never played any of the newer games (6 and up), so I only know about the old versions. Other people might know more about the series and are the ones to talk to. If you're looking for copies of these games, I'd suggest checking Ebay or those in-store old-game bins. As for downloads, I have no idea if the games are now freeware.

MM4-5's intro scene; the quality probably dropped many jaws back in the day.

The problem with the old MM games is that they require a lot of tweaking to run correctly on today's newer [and faster!] computers. For example, MM1's alternating title and credits screens flip at about 1/3 a second, which looks quite trippy and unreadable. Worse than that, some of the games will freeze up if your sound configuration isn't set up properly. In MM4-5 (where I got these pictures from), I couldn't stop it from locking up until I simply selected "No sound" in the install program. I've even heard about DosBox users having problems with the games; I guess you need to suffer a little in order to get in on the fun sometimes.

My party in battles; some of these monsters are absent from the HOMM series.

The old-style interface and gameplay take some getting used to, but it can be rewarding once you get the hang of it. You lead a party of adventurers throughout the realm, fighting monsters and completing quests. These hirelings include Knights, Clerics, Paladins, Rangers, Barbarians, Ninjas, Robbers, and Sorcerers. They possess stats unique to their professions, so Knights and Barbarians hit hard in combat while Clerics and Sorcerers wield deadly magic. Ninjas and Robbers fall in the middle, but are invaluable for their unique ability to pick locks.

The stats screen; a good place to check your strengths and weaknesses.

Through battling evil and helping the needy, your party members gain experience and become more powerful. "Leveling up" isn't nearly as straight forward as in HOMM. When an adventurer has enough experience, he/she must go to a trainer in town and pay some gold to level up. Health and Spell Points increase when new levels are reached; primary stats and secondary skills aren't boosted. In fact, secondary skills are learned from various NPCs throughout the game, and often at a price. These skills are important, such as teaching your entire party the Swimming skill in order to traverse bodies of water. Learning new spells is also slightly different. Your magically gifted adventurers need to pay for admission to local magic guilds, and once there, they must pay gold to learn each spell.

My party getting a quest; I bet that lady loves apples.

It won't be long before you realize the pains of adventuring. Your party members will get hurt from hostile encounters and fall unconscious if health drops too low. They need to rest or receive healing from the temple in town in order to get better; unconsciousness quickly leads to death if you take too long. Also, you'll lose the game if your entire party loses consciousness or dies. There are other factors to worry about, as well, such as monsters that cause disease, poison, insanity, and curses. It's likely that you'll find yourself back in the town's temple healing up often during the game. Fortunately, Paladins and Clerics often possess spells that can heal your party.

A bitter battle; hmmm, that guy looks vaguely familiar...

The games have their fun and frustrating moments, but it's enjoyable overall. Many aspects of the games have probably been improved in the newer MM releases, but I can't verify that until I play those myself. Of these classic versions, I'd recommend games 3-5, as well as the bonus "Swords" adventure. It'll take a lot of practice and plenty of reloading and possibly restarting, but it's a great experience.
