A mandolin is a small classical-looking instrument (smaller than a guitar) that has eight strings (in pairs). It is played similarly to the 12-string guitar, but the guitar chords are played backwards, from what I heard. The mandolin is a popular instrument in country and bluegrass, so it's quite odd for mainstream pop-rock musicians like R.E.M. to use the mandolin on their albums. For their Green album, the band members decided to swap instruments and try some new ones. The accordian and mandolin were introduced. They used the mandolin on these songs:

"The Wrong Child" (1988)
"Hairshirt" (1988)
"Mandolin Strum" (1991)
"Losing My Religion" (1991)
"Half A World Away" (1991)
"Monty Got A Raw Deal" (1992)
After using the mandolin for three albums straight, R.E.M. decided to put the folky instrument aside and do heavy rock songs instead. As time passed, the mandolin wasn't given the spotlight in anymore album tracks. Regardless, guitarist Peter Buck always kept a mandolin with him to perform R.E.M.'s greatest international hit, "Losing My Religion" live in concert. By now, the band has performed that song (w/ mandolin) well over several hundred times on stage.

Terje (or anyone else who could answer), could you recommend a good album from the Pixies, and whats the name of that one which has that hot instrumental song from the soundtrack of "Fight Club"?

Sorry, I don't know much about that band... I wouldn't want to make any recommendations, because they most likely wouldn't be very accurate... I'm sure someone will be able to answer your questions if you stick around though...

Ah yes, Dr. Hook is a great mellow rock band...

Ahh yes, quite good as well... One thing tho, i have argued to my friends about this time after time, "I got stoned and i missed it" can someone please tell me what he missed?

Those are some good songs. My little band might do some of those 3 Doors Down songs at a show later this month. "Whatsername" by Green Day and my re-written version of "What's My Age Again?" by Blink 182 are also things we've covered in the past.
