That is a matter of personal taste. I tend to like large maps where I can play necropolis, my favorite type. Others prefer maps with some sort of a story line.
Rather than trying to list my favorite maps, I will point you to my favorite site for maps. It has reviews and descriptions and ratings. You can search it for maps fitting various criteria.

Draconic by Veldrynus
Lord of the Rings by Veldrynus
Garvant by Sarvi
Sunken Empires by Aczl
The Economists by Rakne Fne
The Menace by Bernhard Kiessling
Alexandra the Great by Mike Johnson
The Last Chance by Ansy
Around the Calendar by Ururam Tururam
Angels Are Back by Ururam Tururam
My Brother's Keeper by Psychobabble
Demonic Dream by Zealot
Stories for Peasants, Lords and Castles by ddimov
* multiplayer maps by Laelth and Blue Camel
* A Wind of Thorns campaign by Wimfrits
* if you have Equlibris mod installed, go for Economists
* if you like playing creatures (and no heroes), try Lunch and Dragons of Might and Magic
+ I'd also like to get some feedback on my Truth and Justice
There, that should keep you busy for the next two years.
