template Qs, RMG for human vs. AI games
Friends - I've been breathlessly reading the Midnight threads about RMG.text, 3 years after the breakthrough (haven't played that long), and am amazed. I think I have a basic understanding but need further assistance.
1. For any of the templates I've downloaded from toheroes.com, saved in my DATA directory, and renamed RMG.txt, I am "unable to generate random map" in the Map Editor, even when I match specifications (2 human or computer players, XL with U, etc.) exactly to the text file. I'm using HOMM3 Complete and Win98 - any thoughts? Do I have the version (ROE, SOD, AB) set wrong?
2. Am I supposed to be using the Map Editor or the in-game "random map" option?
3. What I really want to do is make random two player maps just to play against the AI / Computer, removing all relics, utopias, and boxes. Any recommendations? Is there still any challenge in the AI for any of you, or do you only play vs. humans?
4. If I can't get the RMG to work, what are your favorite challenging maps to play the computer on?
Many many thanks for your help and time for this N00b.

- Can u generate a random map without having a rmg.txt in the DATA directory? Means, can u make a random with the given templates from 3DO?
- Perhaps i missunderstood, but first u wrote u have Heroes complete, then u wrote something about the versions (RoE, AB, SoD). So do u have all 3 versions installed, or JUST Complete (4.0)?

The way to create a random map doesnīt change, no matter if u have a rmg.txt (custom template) in your Data folder or not.

- removing all relics and utopias from a map isnīt that hard to do, u just have to prevent a treasure value higher than 11000. You canīt prevent pandoras boxes without deleting many other important objects, coz those boxes start with a low value, like crypts, stores, minor arties, level 2 dwellings, level 2 shrines and so on. But if u donīt have a higher value than 11000, the maximum reward u will get out of a box would be:
5ooo exp. points, 5000 gold, some level 2 units or all level 1/2 spells.
- There is for sure NO challenge against the AI on a random map, even if u play on 200% vs 7 allied comp players (except u play on a small or medium map...lol)
- If u give me some more infos about what your map should look like, i could create a mg template for you and u could check it out if u like it or not.

Just take a look in the Maphaven forum here on the board, there is a sticky thread about singleplayer maps. There do exist some very good, very tough maps, which are a real challenge.

Try naming the file "rmg" not "rmg.txt" as you may have file extensions hidden. Hence when you are calling it "rmg.txt"....you might be actually calling it "rmg.txt.txt"
Try just rmg

thanks, clarification
Thank you both for the informative replies. Here is what happens - I download the templates off toheroes right into my DATA directory, as RMG, saved as a text file, so the ultimate file name is rmg.txt. I'm sure I'm not accidentally doing rmg.txt.txt.
I restart the external Heroes 3 Map Editor (complete version, 1.4 / most recent, etc.), and when I try to generate a map, I'm going to:
-file
-new
-two level (where appropriate)
-generate random map
-correct number of human/computer players
-zero computer-only players
-no water
-random creature strength
I get the message "unable to generate random map" right away. Without RMG.txt saved in the directory, I have no problem generating a random map. Any quick ideas? Grazie mille, mil gracias, spacibo bolshoe, vielen danke, merci merci!

update
I realized I had saved both an RMG generic file and an RMG.txt in the DATA directory. When I deleted the generic file, leaving me with just the .txt file, the map editor was able to generate a random map fine.
I re-downloaded a template (Schaaf's World, since it promises no confluxes or necropolises and has the easily identifiable zones) as rmg.txt, and used the map generator to make a map. The map did not have any of the correct features.
So now I'm back to being able to generate random maps, but the templates don't appear to work; advice is appreciated. Also: which version should I select when the random map generator asks me for "version" in the pop-up window? Were these templates created for Complete (AB) or should I always be selecting ROE?

To make one point clear for me here:
Why donīt u just create the random map in the game??
Why do u create it with the editor?
You wrote: Heroes Complete (AB)
Not sure if it was just a mispelling, but AB (Armageddons Blade) is NOT Heroes Complete.
The rmg.txt file only works for random maps created in the GAME menue. For this, you need at least AB or Complete.

perfect!
That was exactly the answer I needed - I wasn't sure I could make them in-game. Everything works now and I appreciate your time and patience.

toheroes templates
I would love to get on board with random map generation mods. Toheroes.com doesn't seem to have their map information up anymore - anyone have an old deep link or idea about where to get the templates?
