Poll Question: Samurai or Ninja
Okay aerial and I are having a discussion.
About which of this two Creatures would win in a fight against eachother.
I'm for the Samurai.
Aerial for the Ninja.
Which do you think that should win?
The ninja is very agile and his speed is high.. But his defence is very low.(The fantasy version of the ninja)
The Samurai has many defence, even the nemean lion is jealous about his defence. But his speed is very low(The fantasy version of the samurai.)
okay vote now!

In open field, Samura MAY win.
In places with many obstacles/objects or in the dark, Ninja will prevail.
Why? Go ask a Japanese.

as I said before...
...there are three options:
1. the fight is in the open
2. the fight is in a place with lots of shadows
3. the fight is in a mixed place
outcomes:
1. the ninja (assasin) get's slashed by the samurai (knight)
2. the samurai get's sliced by the ninja
3. they both get mortally wounded...
that goes for both fantasy and real versions...

Huh.......
First off, Ninja's rarely have honor. So if it is a random fight in an ally, they have the advantage. As far as skills, they are about even. There are tales of Samuri's shooting 5 arrows, blind, spliting each other on a post 10 feet away. Ninjas can kill people with a flip of the rist (sharukin). Samuris, being a class of people and not truly soldiers, aren't gauranteed to wear armour. (interresting note: in medieval japan, only samuri's had names. Peasent's names what there job was: old farmer, or cook, etc.) So we can asume that armor is even. A samuri's sword is curved, so it is faster and sharper. A ninja's is often strait, so it can jab and back-stab. Besides all this, though, Ninja's aren't really trained for fights, but for making fast, killing attacks. So unless the ninja gets the surprise or makes a hit early in the fight, the samuri wins. Forget the fantasy bullsnow you are talking about Incu, that is obviously from a video game, and they just make all that snow up! Samuri wins 9 out of 10 times!!!!

I think you r wrong.
First of all a ninja is a higly trained assasin with a lot of tricks up his sleeve and, unless a samurai who wears a heavy armor, very agile.
A ninja could easaly detect a samurai s weakness and outmanouvre him and then go for the kill.
As for samurais , they are elite guards and most of the time trained to fight defensive NOT offensive.

Of course the Ninja-Samurai multi class would win out over both! And by the may, who cares!
I find that so many of these historic figures have been changed and twisted so that it would take a lot of research to find out what they were really like.
I found I didn't like them in Wizards & Warriors and I hope they don't ever show up in heroes.
..might be worth playing WW with a single character, Ninja and Samurai and see which would fair better.

All that crap was created by video game companies to sell video games!!!!!!! Actually take time to read a book, and you would know these things! First off, samuri's were a class of people who were trained to fight throughout their lives, not just on the field. Samuri's could often take any Ninja one on one, because Ninja's spend more time studying stealth, traps, and theft! Read a real book like Shogun and you would know a thing or two. Hell, read a book about ninjas! I bet you didn't even know most Ninja's were Budhist, or had a secret system of religious hand symbols!
If you believe Hollywood about everything, you would actually believe Gladiators fought for their freedom, and that a Gladiator destroyed the Roman Empire! (Guess what movie made most of that up?).

Erm
I read Shogun by ole Jimmy Clavell. I reckon that a fictitious book, no matter how well researched actually gets to the true heart of what a ninja or samurai truly is.
As far as I know, samurai were warriors with honour. Ninja were a class of warriors who had cast shame upon their lieges and were doomed to a life of no honour. Thus they took up mercenary roles, most often involving assassination and such.
Regardless of games and books, I regard a ninja as the perfect hand to hand combatant. They do not specialize in assassination ONLY. This is myth, a ninja would fully expect to have to face samurai and I have very little doubt that they would know exactly how to overcome one.
The Ninja are feared. They are not bound by morals or honour. They kill for pleasure and for money. And they are the best at what they do. Killing. Whether it be quick and silent or long and drawn out, I'd never want to see a ninja. Ever.
They are the perfect killing machine.

Don't know-don't care, but I think some people get a little too passionate about something that really isn't that big a deal. As long as you're not intentioally changing history then just have fun! Lets keep it clean for the younger readers please.

Actually, Venom, Shae is quite right. The Ninja's are mainly assasins and mercenaries. It is said that in order to become a ninja, in any circumstances and in any location, the pretender must be ready to kill his opponent in 10 different ways. Samurai's were people of honour, living by a code , that regarded absolute loyalty and obediance towards their lord. A Japanese noble's army consisted mainly of samurai's.
Therefore, altough being a good fighter, a samurai would stand little chance against a ninja assasin.

Well in a sense Shae you are wrong at least from a historical perspective. Your talking about the hollywood myths of ninja, not the historical ones. Of course this original discussion was about fantasy ninja, so maybe you aren't so wrong to begin with.
But most ninja in history were not hired killers, only a small number of them did that. When ninja hired themselves out it was usually part of a political alliance with a neighboring kingdom or something similar, not for money. Of course there are exceptions. And somebody didn't become a ninja who was not one already. If you were born in the Iga clan, for example, then you were part of the Iga clan. If you born outside it, there was no realistic way to join. And most of the people in the clans spent their time doing much less exciting things like farming and day to day activities.

Samuri were the japanese equivilant to knights and had a strict honor code, if their lord's clan died out they became ronin (clanless) samuri and might hire out as mercenaries.
Ninja were a criminal clan underground, anyone who passed the tests could join the clan. Ninja had no land or it's associated income. Poor farmers working for a samuri could be a ninja. Ninja didn't sit around in a castle of death and practice killing all day long. They were not killing machines. Their main weapon was the fear that they created. Most ninjas were lucky to get one assignment in their entire life. The reason many peolple joined the ninja clans was that people in the lower classes had no other way to play the political games of fuedal Japan.
Most of what we know of ninja is complete hollywood myth(and Japan's hollywood equivialant).

Old timer,
that I'm afraid is completely wrong. The ninja were not a criminal underground, they had their own lands, families, honor systems, everything. You may be thinking of the Yakuza or something similar. Anybody could not join the ninja, anymore then anybody could join any other clan. The whole definition of a clan is that they are all family. And they generaly did have their own political borders, though they were often small and in areas that were easy to flee from in case of an attack. They also generaly existed outside of the traditional class system of Japanese culture, which is why they were often villified so much (the japanese at the time considering somebody outside the class system to be an affront to their way of life). Often they were portrayed in a manner similar to what you describe, although that was far from the truth.

Niteshade is right.
Ninja's weren't really feared for their skills (well, sorta) but for being outside the system. At the time, the punishment for most crimes was death. That is why Hari Kari (sorry, I can't remember the real name, so I'll use the one Hollywood gave it) was so widely used. If your higher-ups decided you must be punished, they asked you to kill yourself in this was for honor. The worst punishment you could give was to prevent someone from commiting Hari Kari.
Ninja's did have clans, and families, but in times of low population they would often steal orphans of great family lines to induct them into the clan.
There was another type of assassin at the time (again, I can't remember the name. I'll find it later) that worshiped a version of Budha and believed dying while assassinating someone would instantly take you to Nirvana, the Budhist version of heaven that you had to be reincarnated several time to get into. Some people think they were Ninja (in the west) because they often wore all black. But they were not. Ninja's did not die in vain, and were quite skilled.
Anyway, the point is that in an even fight, a Samuri will most likely win. Samuri's were trained from birth with sword, arrow, nobility, leadership, etc. Ninja's were trained since birth with sword, sharukin, traps, stealth, etc. In other words, they were about equal with the sword, but samuri's often fought to the death (for honor) while Ninja's are patient and would wait 'til another day.
If it wasn't an even playing field, though, the ninja would to some serious damage.
Hey, what is this doing in the ????? Shouldn't this be inthe Tavern or Wasteland

...ninjas dont' neccessary have to be criminal undergrounds...in fact many of them are hired and trained by feuding lords of Japan...they are used to kill other opposing lords...either they are good or bad one thing is for sure: they are feared all over japan , especially by anyone who has as much as little power because they might be the next target of these shadow warriors...
another thing: since birth samurai's are trained by their lord on the equivalent of chivalry, protect the weak, and what is right and what is wrong(in the way their Lord want them to believe...not necessary the truth) and above all they need to learn what is honour...
on the other hand ninjas are trained as assasins, it's possible that some ninjas are religious as well as some are peasants...they have been trained in the arts of torture, stealth, silence, and quickness at don their work and one thing they are known for are their patience at killing their prey. If a prey is named by an skilled ninja u can sure bet that the prey won't go anywhere except to death's door...also they can use the terrain as their advantage...basically there is no escape....
if both of these people are put into an open field the ninja is gonna win ...why....cause the ninja's gonna wait for the samurai to attack, as soon he attacks he's goin to throw his ninja darts(i forgot the name for these weapons)....if the samurai doesn't attack he will wait till his attacks...patience will kill any samurai....
