Heh, I love that.
Seriously, though, I'm technically a republican too, although I generally don't like to rigidly classify myself as anything. But on more issues than not(particularly the financial ones) I fall into the conservative group. On the gun control issue, though, I usually don't. Of course, as with all issues, I don't see it as black and white.
Anyway, one thing I've never understood about the 'pro-gun control' movement is the 'well, the second amendment says I can' argument. Aside from the fact that you're basing your argument on a twisted interpretation of an obsolete statement made over 200 years ago, the second amentment says absolutely nothing about guns in specific. The word used is arms, which directly translates into the broader category of "weapons of all types". So I wonder, why do the antigun-control advocates only feel that the 2nd amentment allows us to carry our own firearms? Technically, I SHOULD be able to make and carry: nuclear bombs, chemical weapons, radioactive weapons, bottles of sulfuric acid, rabid pit-bulls, etc. The room for interpretation is large. When so and so gets caught building nitrate bombs in his basement, why don't the anti-gun-control advocates jump to his defense, but having a closet full of automatic assault rifles is A-OK, no harm there? Why is the line drawn arbitrarily at guns? (The answer to that question is actually pretty obvious, but I'll leave it rhetoric for now).
The amusing thing is that there are legit reasons to justify keeping your own personal firearm (though I don't really see the need for automatic assault rifles) - but doing so for the purposes of maintaining an active militia and protecting against the British crown isn't one of them, IMO. If you honestly feel that owning guns is an important right, there are better platforms on which to argue than hiding behind the 2nd amendment, which, though you have the benefit of 'having the Constitution on your side', brings with it a lot of logical inconsistencies.

Quote: To appease legitimate reasons for owning a gun I would allow farmers under very strict conditions to borrow a gun from the government. I also would set up government facilites (gun clubs), which would allow citizens to purchase and store their guns there. (never taking them outside the facility). This facility would have a gun range for the target shooting that many people enjoy. I would also have a couple of these facilities in remote regions so the hunters can enjoy that hobby as well. No guns would be allowed to leave these facilites. There also would be no involvement of the private sector.
A good solution indeed! Very good!

Grendal and Corribus, good points!

Don't you think that you would be placing too much power and responsibility in the hands of the government?"
that's kinda like saying :"don't make drugs illegal cuz then all the law enforcement agencies and government bodies would control and exploit all the drugs and it's trafficking.
I guess Im not as paranoid (or maybe im more realistic) than the citizens of the US.. Im fairly aware that my government "does" control all... and in most cases, they do what they want, and I answer back once every 4 years when I vote (pretty sad actually).
Im not worried that my government is going to become tyrants (they presently are when you really look at it)
and having a gun in my house doesn't protect me from them, it adds an element of danger and insecurity to my household. I don't want anybody pulling out a gun at 2am and the drop of a hat. And like I've said before, I'd prefer to know that I can take out my trash at 2am without my neighbour blowing my head cus they thought I was "coming to get them".

Of the countries i know of, England does it best. They do have an added advantage of only having a border with water.
Unfortunately for Scotland and Wales this is not the case
Living in Scotland i have never even seen a gun other than a air rifle. I never even think about them until (recently) you turn on the tv and here about gun killings happening more frequently in London. I think its a safer place to live with its strict laws (there even thinking about banning air rifles in scotland)

anyone see "bowling for columbine"?
I only caught parts of the movie last night but the statistics they show for number of deaths per year in different countries is scary...
They list all these countries with under 200 deaths per year and then they show the states and it's like 11K+!!
scary.

Hmm . . .
Perhaps I should rent the movie along with Fahrenheit 9/11. I think they'd go well together.

I wanna carry a nuke around!!! Could be fun in a Crocodile Dundee-type street situation. When some punk takes out a knife, you take out a nuke.
Come to think of it... when everyone carries a nuke in their backpack, it would be almost mandatory to carry one of those cute little umbrellas that Wild. E. Coyote uses when a huge a boulder is about to fall on this head

consis,
I'd be curious to see(read) your reactions of those movies. I've only seen pieces of "bowling for" and haven't had the chance to see "9/11".
actually the director's interview with marylin manson was pretty interesting.
Russ,
I think I'd prefer to just drive around in a tank.
(I mean a nuke would just add an extra level of anxiety in my life that I don't really need ...
... but a tank!)

Ya, one of those p***y western world tanks with air conditioning. I bet they even have a beer fridge and a comfy lounge on board
Not like the Russian tanks made for REAL men. Because that's what it takes to drive around in a heated steel box without air conditioning when it is +30-35C outside

In Canada...
There has been a law brought in that requires you to have your gun registered. This rule, in my opinion, has done nothing for our country. The whole idea has been a complete waste of time and energy.
I have overheard various people talking about this subject and their opinions are always the same... having to get your guns registered is of no help at all. In fact, it may be more bad than it is good. The people that have illegally owned guns in the past will still illegally own their guns. And the people that go through all the proper procedures in the first place are made to waste their time on registering what was already legal property anyway.
Besides the time and money wasted... our government is also wasting it's focus on this problem where it should be dealing with bigger issues...

Question:
Why would the director interview Maralyn Manson? What is the significance of his opinion. I know some of his history along with other minor details of some of his tours.

from what I got from the movie (columbine)
after the shootings, the media was really pushing all sorts of external factors as the influence on the teens...
they show clips of media or diff groups blamming it on th fact that the kids listened to manson..( of course they blamed it on tv violence, music,etc...)
and there was a huge deal cuz manson was (I think) supose to tour in that area... and there were protests against the concert.
actually the interview was quite interesting...
(i'd need to sit down and watch those films again.)

Come on, Jebus! Didn't you know the REAL reasons behind their action? They didn't do it because they got bullied 24/7, were pissed and had easily accesible guns. I mean, what kind of a ridiculous reason is that? They did it becayse they listened to Manson and played Doom!!!
Oh, and you know who is responsible for that kid's suicide? (The kid who committed suicide because his friend screwed him over in a computer game.) Not his mom for not giving a f**k about her son until it was too late, while she could have convinced him that it is nice to go out in the sun once in a while, work out or do some sports from time to time, get some friends, etc. Accodring to the mom, the creator of the video game is responsible!!! Yeah!!! That's right!!! Bash the EVIL!!!
Oh, and that kid who broke his neck while showing off mountain bike tricks in front of his buds? You know who's responsible? THE GOVERNMENT!!! Because it DID NOT level that hill down!!! YEAH!!!
And who's to blame for everything else?
Everybody, sing along: *blame Ca-nada! blame Ca-nada!*

but manson's not canadian!!?? (confused)
so why would we blame Canada?? lol
Russ,
me thinks you've got some feelings in regards to this you'd like to share!
(im not use to getting the full head on sarcastic arguments...im use to dishin' them!!
Back to the movie...
there was a scece where they were showing all the same "evil" influences in other countries (violent movies, video games, music) and how in those other countries there wasn't nearly as many gun related deaths there... one father of a victim didn't understand what the diff in the US was compared to other countries..
didn't even dawn on them that maybe, just maybe, their views on guns (and it's accessibility) could be to blame.
so Russ,
isn't it YOUR fault?
(heck you're russian AND living in Canada!!)

I was just referring to the usual problems the government should be facing...
Things like healthcare and education are going to be problems until something drastic is done. Basicly, gun control is still important in our country as it is in every country. However, if we are going to try and make a solution to the violence, then let's not waste our time on things like the gun registry...
