Do You Believe In Past Lives?

Hey, i was reading what people wrote in that 'Believe In God' thread. And while i was reading through it i was watching a show about People having past lives. I dont know what to think in this and i dont know how it would work if it is true.

Because if God's real and in the bible it says you go to heaven when you die or hell. Well if THAT'S true, then why the hell do we have past lives, and coming back to different lives over and over again. I thought once we die our souls go to heaven or hell forever.

I just want to see this thread and the discussions people write about it. and what they think about Past Lives. So go on and post. Make this a big discussion. About after lives, Past lives, heaven and hell and what it all means and ads up to.

past or future lives

its all basically the same thing to me.

this whole big bang/ big crunch thing has got me thinking we have all lived this exact existence an infinite amount of times.  it is generally accepted that the amount of energy in our universe is an unchanging entity.  sometimes there will be more kinetic then potential. the highest kinetic is right after the big bang. other times there will be more potential than kinetic. the highest potential will occur the moment before all force from the big bang is spent, and the gravity of all matter will begin to fall back on itself towards the next big bang.  whether kinetic or potential, the energy is never lost -- it is just converted constantly...

if the amount of energy in our universe will never change, then life and existence will continue through all of time.  therefore if time and existance are infinite, then i have typed this exact message an infinite amount of times in the past, and i will type it an infinite amount of times in the future.  unfortunately, i can't remember ANY of the times i typed this, becuase the last time i did it was probably 100 trillion years ago (or from now...)  call me crazy, but i wonder whether deja vu occurs when we recall something -- just for a moment or two -- that happened the last time we were in that situation...

as for living any past lives as a midieval mental patient, or as an irish woad raider, well i dont know.  i mean, there have been a whole LOT of people that have lived thoughout history, and it's hard to believe that the same person couldn't pop out more than one time... LOL then again maybe i should stop reading fantasy novels and start to think sanely for a change =)

and there is no heaven or hell.  it's just the catholic version of santa claus -- no child wants coal in their stockings come christmas day, so the kids do what mommy and daddy tell them to...

Past lives, it is remarkable that everyone who has a past life is a noble or someone famous and not a peasant or worse.  But one fact argues against past lives, there are now over 6 billion people living on the planet today, if you count up all the people who have ever live before it doesn't equal 6 billion.

Bort Thread Rescue Team

(Page 55 rescue)

All I know is that if I was in charge of creating the next massive world religion, I'd have it involve reincarnation.  The rules would basically be that you are guarenteed to come back in this world.  That way, if people really believed it, they'd make a lot of their decisions based on long term planning.  After all, you're much more likely to protect the environment if you're going to be the one choking on the smog in 100 years and you're much more likely to, say, help maintain a park if there's a chance you get to enjoy it in a future life as well.

probably believe in it although much of the "evidence" is at best suspect. Bort nice point, perhaps added with the fact that your behaviour in this life determines your future existence ie if you are a low life scum you end up being something like a worm.

O.O., you're trying to combine Abrahamic religions with Oriental ones.

Depending on your faith, if you follow an Abrahamic religion, if you're good to go to heaven after death, and if you're evil, you take the one-way escalator down. If you're Buddhist or Hindi, you believe in reincarnation after death, and in the case of Buddhists, eventually reaching Nirvana(not sure about the Hindu religion).

Wicca--no idea.
Druidism--haven't the faintest.

Anyone else who knows of other religious afterlifes or the afterlifes for Wicca and Druidism?

I do sometimes believe in Past lives.  Like on TV they showed a kid whose is like 2 who could play baseball extremly good for his age.  That kid could be Babe Ruth or something.

Past lives are a possibility, I wouldn't dismiss it as crazy theories, but I don't see any reason to be certain it's true. Not like it makes that much of a difference anyway, the cool thing with past (and future) lives is that they allow you to start a new page and not remember your old past. So I don't care if I had any past lives, they are meant to be forgotten anyway.

I mighty darn hope there's this reincarnation thing, because if there isn't, being dead must be pretty boring.

How many times were you told that nothing simply disappears in nature? I think that it makes perfect sense if your mind moves to a new body after death, leaving the memories with the corpse. It may not be an instant process, but I would by no means say that reincarnation is nonsense. The thing with how you lived your current life affecting what form you'll live your next in may be just a story made up to make people at least try to be good, but I'm curious to see how you'll prove that the whole idea of reincarnation is pure bullcrap.

no,that nuthin disappearing thing applies for energy and material, not thought!
life is a thought!
it does not carry over to another location after it ends...

I'm not sure how to explain this...
thought is not a form of energy and its no material!
therefore,if it goes out,its gone!
life also is no form of energy or material,so it starts and ends...
life and thought are not things like elementary particles or energy!

Life is a thought you say? Try telling someone that he's dead till he dies because he thinks he's dead. Tell me when you're done.

Where do deleted files go...

Let's perform a small test. Go to notepad ant type a long text, not important what kind of. Insert a disk into your FDD. Then File->Save as..., save the file at A:\. You can make certain the file exists and it is on your disquette. Now. Go to Start menu, choose Run..., type "format /u a:" and press enter. Don't fear, it's just a floppy disk. Say yes. Go to A:\. The file isn't on disk. Question: Where's he gone? Where is it now?

The same will be with you when you die.

micellaneous:

In Wiccan and Neo-pagan systems, reincarnation often is a teaching tool for the soul.  People will mention that they are in "this life" to learn a particular lesson.  You can only remember stuff from this life while entrenched in it, but you remember all your lives when you're dead.  The disparity between the current population and all the other people who ever lived (which would actually account for even fewer souls than people, since the souls are all going 'round and 'round) is dealt with by postulating New Souls and Old Souls.  The Old Souls are the people who have been around the block a few times before and tend to be wiser.  The New Souls are still figuring out how this life-thing works.

I don't know what souls do with all the knowledge accumulated over lifetimes, since they can only keep it while hanging out in the ether between lives.  I don't know how they can predict what lessons a particular incarnation will teach them.  Like Oldtimer, I am suspicious of the special status, either social status of previous lives or spiritual status of Old Souls, given to those who are aware of the system as opposed to the dumb masses.  Then again, it's not my system.

Finally, in case it had escaped anyone's notice, people are not computers.  Computer analogies tend to do poorly in the spiritual realm.
